Haider Mehdi is a former army officer of Pakistan who served as a captain in the Pakistan Army.[1] He is best known for his writings on reform in the Pakistani governance structure, his previous geopolitical show on Public News and his current show, Perspectives, on YouTube. After the ouster of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in April 2022, Mehdi became well known for his articles and vlogs in support of democracy in Pakistan. In November 2023, he was convicted in absentia by a Pakistani military court of inciting sedition and espionage. The conviction was handed down following a court martial under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.

Mehdi is a news analyst and host of Dialogue With Haider Mehdi at Public News.[2] He also works on YouTube where he offers interviews, discussions, and monologues on Global, Middle Eastern, and Pakistani current affairs and history, with a focus on political, economic, social, ethnic, religious, and sectarian issues.[3]

Haider Mehdi was convicted along with Major (retd) Adil Raja for inciting mutiny.[1] Convicted after a court martial under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.[4]

Apart from incitement to rebellion, there were also charges of espionage against the Mahdi.[5]

Inciting rebellion

In June 2023, Mehdi, along with three other journalists and media professionals, was booked by Islamabad police on charges of inciting rebellion. The FIR was lodged by a person named Muhammad Aslam at the Ramna police station in Islamabad, Pakistan.[6]
