Hindu College Colombo (Tamil: இந்துக் கல்லூரி, கொழும்பு) or abbreviated as HCC is a Tamil language National School situated at Bambalapitiya, in the suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1951. This school was started with the name of "பிள்ளையார் பாடசாலை" (Pillayar Paadasaalai) by Justice C. Nagalingam Q.C. Hindu College Colombo is now considered as one of the most prominent Tamil national schools in the country due to its reputation in the way of providing education.[1] Mr.Nagendra is the current principal of the school, who took charge as the position of principal on 29 May 2023.
In March 2019, the P. Sara Oval was chosen to host its first school cricket Big Match, well known as the 10th Battle of the Hinduites between Colombo Hindu College and Jaffna Hindu College, a stadium which was adopted as temporary home ground for Colombo Hindu College.[2]
In November 2023, 10-year old boy Selvasekaran Rishiyudhan rose to prominence and limelight and garnered widespread attention in social circles after claiming an eight-wicket haul without conceding any run representing Colombo Hindu College in an Under-13 interschools division II tournament match against MDH Jayawardene MV Battaramulla which was played at the Ediriweera Sarathchandra Grounds, Mulleriyawa.[3][4] Selvasekaran Rishiyudhan bowled a marathon spell of 9.4 overs and took 8 wickets without conceding a run by sending down nine maiden overs in a row to help bowl out MDH Jayawardene MV Battaramulla for just 28 runs and as a result Colombo Hindu College won by a massive margin in terms of an innings victory.[5][6][7]
Services
The school provides Tamil and English medium education for pupils aged 6 to 19 years in its Primary and Upper sections.[8] The school consists of Primary section to Advanced Level section. In 2006, there were over 4500 students and 120 teachers. Nearly all the buildings are purpose-built and include the Science Laboratories, the Computer Room, the Library, and the Art facilities.[9]
History
The college started as பிள்ளையார் பாடசாலை (Pillayaar School) on 12 February 1951 by The Hindu Educational Society with 55 students with 2 teachers. The first principal of this school was Mr. Pathmanathan.[10]
Initially the school provided education upto senior-level students but then temporarily limited itself to junior grades and transferred the upper grade students to the newly established Hindu College Ratmalana in 1955. Both institutions continued to function under the same principal up until 1966, when the Educational Ministry tookover both schools and proclaimed them as "National Schools". College began to function independantly again, proceeding to expand with more blocks of classrooms and facilities for students.
The first inter-house sportsmeet of the school was held in 1968. Students were divided into main houses namely; Kambar, Valluvar, Barathi and Illango (the four most important historians in Tamil language history) which are used to represent the students at the Sports meet which is held annually.[11] Recently Navalar house was introduced in accordance to the increasing number of student population at the College.
On 19 September 2016, the school's first practice pitch was opened and renowned cricketers such as Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara were invited as chief guests for this historical moment.[12][13]
Around 2018, Construction for a Sports Complex began along with a Swimming Pool.
During 2020, School's main playground was enlarged and refurbished by the college's principal at that time, Mr. T.P. Parameshwaran Sir.
School flag and emblem
The official school flag was designed and introduced by the first principal of the school, Pathmanathan. The flag has three horizontal stripes, gold in the centre and rest of brown. The college emblem is placed in the centre of the gold stripe. The emblem depicts the motto of the school "கற்றாங்கு ஒழுகுக" (Follow what you study).[14][15]
School Anthem
The college's anthem was written by Mr.Veeramani Aiyyar of Jaffna in 1976. A video featuring the anthem, which was sung by Nirosh Vijay, was uploaded to YouTube in 2014. The following are the lyrics of the anthem.
"வாழ்த்துவோம் வணங்குவோம்
வானளாவும் புகழோங்க வாழ்த்துவோம்
