Bashir Lukonge,[1] known professionally as Bash Luks,[2][3][4] is a Ugandan musician, music executive, songwriter, actor and author who is the founder and a member of Lot Fire Records,[5][6] an independent record label which nurtures new talents in Uganda, East Africa. He sings in Luganda, mixes with English and sometimes Kiswahili. His music genre specialty is afrobeat, reggae, dancehall, and RnB.[7][8]

Early life

Bash Luks was born on May 11, 1993 at Mulago Hospital to Isima Matovu, a businessperson, and Rosemary Nannyonga, a nursing assistant. Growing up in Mubende and later living in Kampala, he is the youngest of two siblings.[9]

Personal life

He is the youngest sibling of Hanifah Nalubega and Isa Sempaya, an enrolled comprehensive nurse. Bash Luks is a father to two daughters, Amaal Lukonge and Omaira Lukonge.[10]

Tattoos

Regarding his tattoos, "I currently have three tattoos: an eagle, a mantra, and a scorpion located on my back. Eagles are known for flying alone in the clouds, while mantras symbolize knowledge, and the scorpion represents resilience or a fighting spirit. These tattoos really inspire me to tackle any challenges that come my way."

Education background

He attended Butega Church of Uganda Primary School, which is in Mityana. He was admitted to St. Joseph's Secondary School Busega for his ordinary level of education and later completed high school at St. Matia Mulumba Secondary School, located in Kassanda.[10]

Career

His journey into music began during his elementary school years, where he served as the choir leader. His professional music career started in 2022 with the release of his first song, "Nkubwamu" (feat. Jim Siizer), loosely translated as 'getting high,' [2][11][12] which was recorded at Lot Fire Records. Bash Luks is known for singing inspirational and advocacy songs.[7][13][14]

Artistry

Music style

Bash Luks provides his lyrics in both Luganda and English. He sings in urban popular music style well know as afrobeat. Afrobeat is Kidandali in Luganda,[2][7] the indigenous language in Uganda's central region. Since the late 2000s, Kidandali has inspired a new generation of Ugandan musicians to create urban popular music in their native language.

Influences

His musical style was influenced by a wide range of influential figures in the music industry, including Madoxx Ssemanda Sematimba, Michael Jackson and the late Lucky Dube,[2][13] Afrocentric musical artists like Eddy Grant and Fela Kuti.
