Barry Edward Traynor (born 9 December 1946) is an Australian former politician.
He was born in Ararat and attended Ararat High School until 1964 before working as a bank teller in 1965.In 1966 he joined the Police Force, where he remained until 1992. He was awarded the National Medal,Diligent and Ethical Service Medal and the Police Service Good Conduct Medal. He joined the Liberal Party in 1988 as a member of the Wendouree branch, and in 1992 was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Ballarat East. He served until his defeat in 1999, whereupon he returned to the police service.[1]He was stationed at Russell Street,Fitzroy before being stationed at Ballarat.He was a uniformed officer a Detective Sergeant at Ballarat a uniform Senior Sergeant at Ballarat and retired in 2002 as an Inspector Staff Officer to the Commander No.1 Region.Qualified “Airlie” Police Inspectors College.
He was awarded four Chief Commissioners commendations for investigation of crime and multiple arrests.
He holds an, Advanced Diploma of Police Investigation,Graduate Certificate in Management, Advanced Diploma of Police Management,Diploma of Security and Risk Management,Certificate IV in Security and Risk Management and a Certificate IV in Investigative Services. Awarded a Parliamentary Study Tour visiting the UK, Canada and Jersey Channel Islands meeting with law enforcement departments discussing crime and drugs.
In 1995 part of a delegation to the Republic of Pakistan,1997 met with Director States of Jersey Customs and Excise,Strategy Manager Crime and Drug Unit Jersey Channel Islands,Director of Policy Analysis Division Coordinated Law Enforcement Unit, British Columbia,Director General National Criminal Intelligent Service,Home Office Drugs Division UK and States of Jersey Police Headquarters Assistant Chief Officer.
Certificate in Industrial Relations and Legislation,Certificate of Qualification Disaster Management,Centre of Disaster Management University of New England concepts, models and principle of disasters with a pass at Associate Diploma Level.
He was chair of the Police and Emergency Services Bills Committee and also a member of the Drugs and Crime Prevention Turning the Tide Committee 1997 Interim Report

In retirement volunteered for McCallum Industries in Ballarat and did some work with the City of Ballarat in graffiti removal programs.Now a Police Veterans Peer Support Officer volunteer looking after retired police suffering from PTS, depression, alcoholism, anxiety and many associated problems.
