Abigail Chamungwana largely known by her stage names Abigail Chams[1] and Abby Chams[2] is a Tanzanian multi-instrumentalist, social activist[3] and a singer[4] signed under Sony Music.[5][6] She was born in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Music career
Born into a musical family, Abby Chams' grandfather was a music director of an orchestra also her grandmother was a singer in the church choir,[7] she started learning piano when she was five and mastered the violin by eight she also mastered guitar, drummer and flute.
She started her career by posting music covers on her social accounts. She has collaborated with top Tanzanian musical artists like Rayvanny and Harmonize (singer). She has also worked with foreign musical artists like Jekalyn Carr.
In 2022 she was signed to Sony Music[8][9] Africa joining her countryman, Ali Kiba.[10]
Chams announced her first EP titled 5 sixteen months after signing to Sony Music. Due to that announcement, Abby released Milele as a second lead single following Nani featuring Marioo which was released a year after the recording deal was signed.
Simulizi na Sauti (SnS)'s writer, Enky Frank praised Abigail Chams as a treasure that needs to be taken care of in order to write a good history of Bongo Flava music. Stated that, Abigail Chams is a Tanzanian musician who performs Bongo Flava music to international standards, with a musical education and great ability to play different instruments.[11]
On September 29, 2023, Abigail Chams released her debut EP 5, which contained six tracks including collaborations with Marioo, Rayvanny, Whozu and Chino Kid.[12]
Social activities
In 2020 Abby Chams was named a youth advocate by UNICEF[13] in Tanzania on mental health and gender equality during International Children's Day 2020 also performed in expo 2020 in Dubai.[14] She started the youth program called "Teen Talks With Abby Chams",[15] as a safe place for young people to talk on the challenges they face and discuss solutions to also fix mental health issues.[16] She is also an ambassador for the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.[17]
