Background and Identification
The Squier Stratocaster is an electric guitar manufactured and sold by Squier, a marque of Fender. It is essentially a re-branded Fender Stratocaster. The Fender Stratocaster is colloquially known as the Strat and has been manufactured by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation since 1954. The Stratocaster is a double-cutaway guitar with an extended top “horn” shape for enhanced balance. The Stratocaster shape is one of the most-often replicated electric guitar shapes. Guitars that emulate the Stratocaster produced by other manufacturers are often called S-Type or ST-Type guitars.
The Stratocaster guitar was introduced with an offset waist, double cutaway, elongated horns, and a heavily contoured back that was designed for increased comfort and balance to play while standing up and slung off the players’ shoulder with a strap. It has a three-pickup design that is designed to offer increased versatility and a choice in tone quality over prior one- and two- pickup guitars. The Stratocaster also includes a vibrato arm integrated into its bridge plate. These design elements eventually became industry standards because of the Stratocaster’s popularity.
The Stratocaster is a modular guitar and includes easily removable components so users can perform modifications on their guitars. Fender has released several Stratocaster models with different pickup configurations and has made small modifications to the base model such as cosmetic changes and changing the original three-position selector switch to a standard five-position selector switch.
