Background and Identification
Roller skates aren’t just a fashion statement, but they can also be a form of clean-energy transportation, as well as a source of endless entertainment for children and adults alike. The first record of roller skate use was in 1743 in a stage performance in London. In 1857, public roller skating rinks were first made, also in London. James Leonard Plimpton from New York City revolutionized roller skates by inventing the quad skate in 1863. The quad skate included four wheels instead of two for increased stability. Plimpton’s invention also resulted in the first public roller skating rinks in the U.S.
Today roller skates are made by a wide range of companies and include models as expensive as $650 (Antik AR2 Roller Skates). Of course, more moderately priced options, like the Impala Quad Skate for $94.95, are also available. A variety of children’s roller skates are also on the market.
Roller skates come in a range of colors and styles, but all roller skates have a boot or shoe of some form with wheels on the bottom. Many roller skates have a toe stop or toe plug at the front of the boot, designed to make stopping easier and prevent you from any cartoon-like crashes.
