Where Pryor Mountains, Montana
When 2001
Photographer Chris Johns

This wild horse is a member of the Pryor Mountain herd. Unique to the Montana landscape, this group of wild horses has been determined to have directly descended from horses brought to the United States by Spanish explorers in the 1600s.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Searching for Sacagawea," February 2001, National Geographic magazine)
