Where Sweden
When 1999
Photographer Sisse Brimberg

"...Norse traders...rowed up eastern Europe's rivers in search of glory and Arab silver. A few Vikings—locals called them Rus—continued to Constantinople and Baghdad. Many stayed in Russia and adopted slavic ways. Back home in Sweden, families honored those who died in distant lands. Varin dedicated the Rok Stone, right, to his son Vaemod."

—From "In Search of Vikings," May 2000, National Geographic magazine
