Photographer James L. Stanfield

With 70-foot [21-meter] walls and 100-foot [30-meter] towers, the Herodium fortress was built by Herod the Great for protection as well as pleasure. Constructed between 37 B.C. and 4 B.C., it was the Judean king's favorite fortress and his chosen tomb, although his actual burial place is unknown.

(Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Israel—Searching for the Center," July 1985, National Geographic magazine)
