With 70-foot [21-meter] walls and 100-foot [30-meter] towers, the Herodium fortress was built by Herod the Great for protection as well as pleasure. Constructed between 37 B.C. and 4 B.C., it was the Judean king's favorite fortress and his chosen tomb, although his actual burial place is unknown.
