One regards a privacy tool developed by CloudFare which will probably speed up your internet and aims to limit how much data your internet service provider can collect about you. The second article is by Richard Stallman. Stallman says, "To restore privacy, we must stop surveillance before it even asks for consent." Stallman is president of the Free Software Foundation, which launched the development of a free/libre operating system GNU. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 12 No 14 Page 2 April 04, 2018 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================ A R T I C L E S ================================================================ Privacy Tool, Released on April Fool's Day By Laura Hautala/CNET: This new privacy tool would speed up your internet, too It's no joke how much data your internet service provider can collect about you. A new service from Cloudflare aims to change that. These days, you may wish you had a magic switch you could flip to keep your data more secure. The misuse of Facebook user data by Cambridge Analytica is only the latest consumer privacy flap to create outrage. Remember the Equifax hack? That affected more than 230 million people. And in 2017, US lawmakers reversed Obama-era rules that forbade your internet service provider from making money off your web-browsing history. Suddenly internet users are realizing that their internet service providers have been amassing huge troves of data on all the websites they visit. People aren't happy about that, and it seems there's nothing we can do about it. So a magic switch would be nice. And that's essentially what website performance and security giant Cloudflare set out to create with its new tool called 1.1.1.1. Announced Sunday, 1.1.1.1 aims to speed up your internet connection and make it impossible for your ISP to collect your browsing history. That's big news at a time when consumers are demanding more control of their data. "If you switch [your DNS (jk)] to 1.1.1.1, then that ledger of where you're going online is not being kept by your ISP," Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, said in an interview. With 1.1.1.1, internet users can let Cloudflare take over the process of resolving requests to the Domain Name System, also known as DNS. That's the crucial process of matching up a URL -- like facebook.com -- with a website's true location on the internet, called an IP address (for Facebook, that's 157.240.18.35). Usually your internet service provider takes care of DNS for you. This also happens to be a great way to log every website you visit. Taking that out of your ISP's hands, then, makes it harder for the company to collect your browsing history. That's what Cloudflare's pitching with its new service, which is free and can be used by changing the settings in your web browsers or operating systems. You can use it on computers, routers and phones. If you type 1.1.1.1 into your web browser, you'll find a website that gives you instructions. Swearing off data collection animated gif shows how to point your iPhone toward 1.1.1.1 on a specific Wi-Fi network. [This gif shows how to point your iPhone toward 1.1.1.1 on a specific Wi-Fi network. https://tinyurl.com/y96bsjrv or http://www.cnet.com/news/cloudfare-new-1111-dns-privacy-tool- would-speed-your-internet-too/ (wraps)] But wait, if Cloudflare is directing your website queries, then can't it collect your browsing history for itself? Actually, they're not going to keep that data at all, Prince said. "At no time will we record the list of where everyone is going online," Prince said. "That's creepy." Cloudflare is working with third-party auditors at KPMG to examine their systems and guarantee they're not actually collecting your data. That privacy commitment, Prince said, is what separates Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 from other DNS services that are free and open to the public. Other services include OpenDNS (owned by Cisco) and open-source project TentaDNS. Google also provides a DNS resolver, called Google Public DNS. Google does limit the kinds of information it saves when you use its DNS service, but it keeps anonymized lists of all the web addresses users search for in permanent logs, along with other information. The company says it doesn't correlate web browsing activity with Google accounts. Cloudflare's promise to keep your data private is impressive, said Heidi Shey, a privacy and security expert at business analyst firm Forrester. "It's a great thing that they're coming out of the gate and being up front about that," Shey said. Still, she added, "You're kind of taking what they're saying at face value." The company will need to continue to be transparent, showing what the auditors find in their logs, for consumers to continue to trust the service, Shey said. That might be especially important because of a coding flaw, dubbed Cloudbleed, that in 2017 afflicted websites using Cloudflare's products. That led to the potential exposure of usernames, passwords, messages and other important information. Cloudflare fixed the problem, and there aren't any indications that hackers used the flaw to steal anyone's information. Taking it one step further Prince acknowledges that 1.1.1.1 is no silver bullet. Internet service providers still have other tools for sniffing out which websites you visit. That's because some key information about your web-browsing habits is encoded into the bits and bytes that travel over the internet, and ISPs can intercept that information and read it. Cloudflare is hoping to help solve that problem, too. It's promoting the implementation of a system called DNS over HTTPS, which encrypts that data about your web browsing as it flows online. It'll be up to the makers of web browsers, operating systems and devices to build in support for DNS over HTTPS. If that becomes standard practice, using a DNS service like 1.1.1.1 will cut off your internet service provider from your browsing history for good. Mozilla is looking into making DNS over HTTPS a feature of its Firefox browser. "Firefox is the most privacy-centric browser, and we are always looking for new technologies like DNS over HTTPS to ensure we're at the cutting edge of speed, privacy and making life online better," Selena Deckelmann, a senior director of engineering at Mozilla who focuses on Firefox, said in a statement. What's the catch? Lest you think this is an April Fools' joke too good to be true, Prince said there's something in it for Cloudflare, too. The company's main business is making its customers' websites run fast. While Cloudflare has an array of services to make this happen, Prince said, he realized that creating a free DNS service could speed things up on the user's end. So if you use 1.1.1.1, there should be a combined effect when you visit the websites of Cloudflare customers. "It's going to be even faster," Prince said. Oh, and why announce it on April Fools' Day? It's a bit of programming humor, Prince said. April 1 can also be written as 4/1. That's an awful lot like four ones, or... 1.1.1.1. === Additional Information Before making any changes, write down your current settings for DNS just to be safe. Keep these incase you need to revert to them at in the future. Instructions for Ubuntu: These steps are for Ubuntu. Most Linux distributions configure DNS settings through the Network Manager. As you probably remember, your DNS settings can be specified in /etc/resolv.conf using an editor like VI. Click the Applications icon on the left menu bar. Click Settings, then Network. Find your internet connection on the right pane, then click the gear icon. Click the IPv4 or IPv6 tab to view your DNS settings. Set the “Automatic” toggle on the DNS entry to Off. Provide the 1.1.1.1 DNS addresses in the DNS entries field: 1.0.0.1 For IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111,2606:4700:4700::1001 Click Apply, then restart your browser. That does it, you are now set for faster more private DNS servers. We need laws to stop this data being collected in the first place Journalists have been asking me whether the revulsion against the abuse of Facebook data could be a turning point for the campaign to recover privacy. That could happen, if the public makes its campaign broader and deeper. Broader, meaning extending to all surveillance systems, not just Facebook. Deeper, meaning to advance from regulating the use of data to regulating the accumulation of data. Because surveillance is so pervasive, restoring privacy is necessarily a big change, and requires powerful measures. After the Facebook scandal it's time to base the digital economy on public v private ownership of data. The surveillance imposed on us today far exceeds that of the Soviet Union. For freedom and democracy's sake, we need to eliminate most of it. There are so many ways to use data to hurt people that the only safe database is the one that was never collected. Thus, instead of the EU's approach of mainly regulating how personal data may be used (in its General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR), I propose a law to stop systems from collecting personal data. The robust way to do that, the way that can't be set aside at the whim of a government, is to require systems to be built so as not to collect data about a person. The basic principle is that a system must be designed not to collect certain data, if its basic function can be carried out without that data. Data about who travels where is particularly sensitive, because it is an ideal basis for repressing any chosen target. We can take the London trains and buses as a case for study. The Transport for London digital payment card system centrally records the trips any given Oyster or bank card has paid for. When a passenger feeds the card digitally, the system associates the card with the passenger's identity. This adds up to complete surveillance. I expect the transport system can justify this practice under the GDPR's rules. My proposal, by contrast, would require the system to stop tracking who goes where. The card's basic function is to pay for transport. That can be done without centralising that data, so the transport system would have to stop doing so. When it accepts digital payments, it should do so through an anonymous payment system. Frills on the system, such as the feature of letting a passenger review the list of past journeys, are not part of the basic function, so they can't justify incorporating any additional surveillance. These additional services could be offered separately to users who request them. Even better, users could use their own personal systems to privately track their own journeys. Black cabs demonstrate that a system for hiring cars with drivers does not need to identify passengers. Therefore such systems should not be allowed to identify passengers; they should be required to accept privacy-respecting cash from passengers without ever trying to identify them. However, convenient digital payment systems can also protect passengers' anonymity and privacy. We have already developed one: GNU Taler. It is designed to be anonymous for the payer, but payees are always identified. We designed it that way so as not to facilitate tax dodging. All digital payment systems should be required to defend anonymity using this or a similar method. What about security? Such systems in areas where the public are admitted must be designed so they cannot track people. Video cameras should make a local recording that can be checked for the next few weeks if a crime occurs, but should not allow remote viewing without physical collection of the recording. Biometric systems should be designed so they only recognise people on a court-ordered list of suspects, to respect the privacy of the rest of us. An unjust state is more dangerous than terrorism, and too much security encourages an unjust state. The EU's GDPR regulations are well-meaning, but do not go very far. It will not deliver much privacy, because its rules are too lax. They permit collecting any data if it is somehow useful to the system, and it is easy to come up with a way to make any particular data useful for something. The GDPR makes much of requiring users (in some cases) to give consent for the collection of their data, but that doesn't do much good. System designers have become expert at manufacturing consent (to repurpose Noam Chomsky's phrase). Most users consent to a site's terms without reading them; a company that required users to trade their first-born child got consent from plenty of users. Then again, when a system is crucial for modern life, like buses and trains, users ignore the terms because refusal of consent is too painful to consider. To restore privacy, we must stop surveillance before it even asks for consent. Finally, don't forget the software in your own computer. If it is the non-free software of Apple, Google or Microsoft, it spies on you regularly. That's because it is controlled by a company that won't hesitate to spy on you. Companies tend to lose their scruples when that is profitable. By contrast, free (libre) software is controlled by its users. That user community keeps the software honest. # Richard Stallman is president of the Free Software Foundation, which launched the development of a free/libre operating system GNU Copyright 2018 Richard Stallman. If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) Subscriptions: Mailing-List subscriptions via http://www.filegate.net/sub.html Or you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-200-4076 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They may fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead in the body of your routed netmail to janis@filegate.net Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one or your email address and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Location of Earlier Issues on the Web: You can read single past issues here: http://www.filegate.net/fidogaz/fidogaz.htm This link includes all issues from Volume 1 Number 1, Sept. 30th 2007, through the present.
