Some news of the week:
Flavio Besso wrote an article this week explaining an alternate
idea for helping Fidonet to grow.. a welcome idea that worked
for Zone 4 and which could work for all of us, IMO.
Thank you Flavio for this optimistic article. We know it will
take work to regrow Fidonet, and Zone 4's work is appreciated
and welcome in the network.

Regrowing Fidonet

A couple of days ago all Fidonet nodes all over the world
received an unusual volume peak on its mail events. One of our
Sysops decided to send a message through each and every possible
echo with a message asking people to visit his board, stating
that this had been successful about 20 years ago.
My first reaction was complete disbelief. After all, it's
been a while since the Internet arrived and our users started to
dwindle. In addition, it's been also of common knowledge that
sending emails to everyone in order to advertise a product or
service usually backfires, although nowadays most of the e-mail
clients and servers have filters to avoid that this kind of spam
ever reaches its destination.
Then I tried to figure out where it came from.
Unfortunately I am not the heavy Fidonet user I would like to
be- Personal and work-related matters have always taken priority
on my time, although I try to read a couple of echos and
contribute whenever I can. Upon checking the monthly
network-wide statistics I realized that the spam was sent by the
system that today is the second in Fidonet content-generation,
responsible for 10.2% of the whole Engilsh- language Fidonet
traffic.
While I tried to figure out the sysop's desperation, I
reminded myself of all the efforts I've been through. As you
already know, I am from Zone 4. Zone 4 was almost dead about a
year ago, we had almost no systems and no messages being
generated. Nowadays we have an average of 300 messages/month at
the Brazilian Portuguese echoes, and a small contribution of 6%
of the Spanish echoes traffic last month, and 0.7% (74 messages)
of traffic into the English echoes.
How did we achieve that? Certainly it wasn't by spamming
the whole Fidonet.
Our RC80 coordinator contacted me and some other former
Sysops about a year ago and asked us to come back. We
reactivated our systems and started working together, as really
a team, to help each other to overcome the tremendous challenges
that rebuilding a region imply. Also, we acknowledged that we
were getting together in favor of what has always been a hobby
to us, and keeping that hobby alive would be our goal. No
deadlines, no rush.
We hit the word into the streets. Contacted other former
sysops. Checked backups into long gone drawers and CD-ROMs. We
found very good friends at RC90 that were always willing to
contribute and assist. And things started to get into traction.
Most of our traffic today comes from ourselves, although
we have now a bunch of faithful users that contribute, despite
most of our traffic, as you can see from the statistics, come
from the Brazilian Portuguese echoes. Yet, we are still
growing, with some former users coming back, prospecting some
new people... Our next steps are looking into new technologies
to allow more people to have access to Fido (like JAMNNTPD), and
talking about how cool BBSing can be to others. We are not
looking for users, we are looking for souls that are also
passionate about BBSing and exchanging experiences and could
contribute.
That, I believe, should be the spirit. Create a blog, talk
to people, your friends, put videos in Youtube explaining how to
download QWK packets or how to read online Fidonet echoes.
Encourage software developers to come back and develop new tools
for BBSing. But never forget that this is a hobby, and things
should go on its own pace.
I intend to continue here until there's at least one
system out there receiving my messages, and I believe that there
are many more out there that think like me :)

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
