"through 20 years of effort, we've successfully trained everyone
to use passwords that are hard for humans to remember, but easy
for computers to guess."

The Internet is obviously a very important part of our Fidonet
experience these days. Even way back however, well before the
Internet was a part of daily life, security issues forced us to
maintain good habits regarding passwords with our mailers,
accounts on bbs's and more. Today is no different. Perhaps
though security with passwords is more important however since
each of us uses so many devices in a typical day's time. Hence
the articles in this issue regarding the passwords we use.
Also in this issue, you'll see my request to the Zone 1 RCs to
clean up our section of each RC's segment regarding usage of the
INA: statement. I was rather surprised to see so many errors in
this flag's usage in Zone 1. As you may remember, the INA: flag
was created by then R18C, Ross Cassell when long lines in the
nodelist became an issue in R18. We can thank Ross for his
insight then in creating a flag that is still pertinent and very
much in use today.

Errors in INA: Statements in the ZONE 1 Segment
By Janis Kracht, 1:1/0, janis@filegate.net
A number of RCs have allowed errors to slip into the ZONE 1
Segment of the nodelist regarding Internet usage flags. I
understand this, given how our eyes can slip over what our brain
"expects" to see when we examine lines such as those in the
nodelist.
I'm asking _all_ RCs however to please correct errors in each of
their segments this week and get me a new segment as soon as
possible.
Obviously it is better if you contact your NCs and have them get
the corrected version from nodes with errors, but if you cannot
contact those people with errors because of their vacations,
etc. this time of year, I'm asking that you make the change
necessary.
The INA: flag should be the last flag in each node's line in the
nodelist, so when you have a line that looks like this:
[...]SYSTEM_ABC,SOMEWHERE,SYSOP,-Unpublished-,300,CM,XX,ITN,INA
:,IBN
it is using the INA flag wrong.
I am talking about internet capabilty flags like ITN, IFC, or
IFT, IBN flags etc.. -preceeding- the INA: flag. They should
NOT preceed INA:, they should come after the INA:.
The above example should look like:
[...]SYSTEM_ABC,SOMEWHERE,SYSOP,-Unpublished-,300,CM,XX,INA
:,ITN,IBN
Here is an example of correct usage from my 1:261/100 node
listing:
,100,<<PRISM_BBS,Slaterville_Springs_NY,Janis_Kracht,
-Unpublished-,300,CM,INA:filegate.net,IBN:24555,IFT,ITN
This line above shows an alternate port (not the standard port)
for IBN, along with other protocols which do use the standard
port for protocols like ITN, etc.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
**Please correct this for all nodes in Z1 and get me a segment
as soon as possible.**

Like I said, Years Ago....
By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net
I found the following article regarding computer passwords and
their current "failings" and thought it could be of interest to
many here.
It was never a good idea to use short words or common-use words
for passwords, we all know that.
Passwords composed of short words or familiar words turned out
"bad" for passwords.
It is something I've always said, and IIRC, I wrote an article
about it for this 'zine long ago - generally speaking, it's
better to come up with some random phrase and use the first
letters of that phrase for your password.
The basic idea was don't use any "one word" if it's recognizable
as a word, regardless of it's length.. Some people think they
are safe with passwords like that if they stuff the word with
various numbers, upper case/lower case substitutions.. say,
like P1CKL3 for PICKLE.
Rather, the best way to create a password is to use a random
PHRASE, one that makes NO sense, and take the first letters of
that phrase to make your password.
Another key here is also to use a password manager so that you are not
tempted to use some close variation of the one you've come up with when you
need another password... :) Using a password manager to store the passwords
from your various devices really is a necessity.
The example for the type of phrase one should use, that I
remember giving in my earlier article was something like, "Jack
wants chocolate cake, I'll take two".
I'm glad to see someone else agrees with me about this :) I
think it is also great that the emphasis in this article is not
the benefit of "frequent password changes", because frequent
password changes may actually lead to a false sense of security.
Here's the article I found on the BBC:
=-=-=-=-=-
The author of an influential guide to computer passwords says he
now regrets several of the tips he gave.
Bill Burr had advised users to change their password every 90
days and to muddle up words by adding capital letters, numbers
and symbols - so, for example, "protected" might become
"pr0t3cT3d4!".
The problem, he believes, is that the theory came unstuck in
practice.
Mr Burr now acknowledges that his 2003 manual was "barking up
the wrong tree".
He disclosed his views in an interview with the Wall Street
Journal.
Current guidelines no longer suggest passwords should be
frequently changed, because people tend to respond by making
only small alterations to their existing passwords - for
example, changing "monkey1" into "monkey2"- which are relatively
easy to deduce. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that it
takes longer for computers to crack a random mix of words - such
as "pig coffee wandered black" - than it does for them to guess
a word with easy-to-remember substitutions - such as "br0k3n!".
Mr Burr's original advice was distributed by the US government's
National Institute of Standards and Technology.
It has since been amended several times, with the most recent
edition being released in June.
"Anything published under the Nist banner tends to be
influential, so these guidelines have had a long lasting
impact," said Prof Alan Woodward, from the University of Surrey.
"But we've known for some considerable time that these
guidelines actually had a rather unfortunate effect.
"For example, the more often you ask someone to change their
password, the weaker the passwords they typically choose.
"And, as we have all now so many online accounts, the situation
is compounded so it encourages behaviours such as password reuse
across systems."
Britain's National Cyber Security Centre issued its own guidance
on the matter in 2015.
It recommended that organisations abandoned a policy of pushing
their users into regular password resets, and that they should
support the use of password managers - programs that securely
store hundreds of different logins, avoiding the need to
memorise each one.
"It's good that password advice is now being updated to be based
on evidence," said Dr Steven Murdoch, from University College
London.
"But there is still traditional advice in other areas of
computer security being perpetuated despite us knowing it won't
work.
"We need research to tell us what security advice will actually
improve the situation, and for the government and companies to
pay attention to results."

More Information about the FidoGazette:
Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor.
If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please
contact me :)
Subscriptions: Mailing-List subscriptions via
http://www.filegate.net/sub.html
Or you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick
compatible program.
Where to Send Your Articles
Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
something of consequence here :) Write an article!
If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your
article off at:
Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach:
Janis Kracht at 1:261/38
Modem: 607-200-4076
Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555
telnet mailer: filegate.net
If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as
routed attaches. They may fail somewhere along the path before
getting here. Send them instead in the body of your routed
netmail to janis@filegate.net
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one or your email address and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
