An updated INFORMATION page in the FidoGazette now simplifies
submission instructions, and gives web locations to access
earlier issues of the FidoGazette. FYI, The FidoGazette was
started 2007-09-30 by Sean Dennis, 1:18/200. The FidoGazette is
released weekly in the FGAZETTE file echo.

Ladies With Typewriters
They're Back! Those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank God for
the church ladies with typewriters. These sentences actually
appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church
services:
The Fasting & Prayer conference includes a meal
Scouts are saving aluminium cans, bottles and other items to be
recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.
The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water'. The sermon
tonight:'Searching for Jesus.'
Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid
of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your
husbands.
Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.
Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again' giving
obvious pleasure to the congregation.
For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a
nursery downstairs.
Next Thursday there will be try-outs for the choir. They need
all the help they can get.
Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in
the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school
days.
A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall.
Music will follow.
At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What
Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice.
Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition
of several new members and to the deterioration of some older
ones.
Please place your donation in the envelope along with the
deceased person you want remembered.
The church will host an evening of fine dining, super
entertainment and gracious hostility.
Pot-luck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to
follow.
The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind.
They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.
This evening at 7PM there will be a hymn singing in the park
across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to
sin.
The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation
would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast
next Sunday.
Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7PM . Please
use the back door.
The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in
the Church basement Friday at 7PM. The congregation is invited
to attend this tragedy.
Weight Watchers will meet at 7PM at the First Presbyterian
Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.

Why Run A BBS??

In response to the question "Why Run A BBS??", one could get a
variety of answers for that. And, that's sort of the skit from
Foster Brooks, when they asked him "What were you doing when the
earthquake hit??".
When I first started into BBSing, I was logging onto a BBS that
was run by the University Of Arkansas At Little Rock computer
science department. While UALR is still around, the BBS is long
gone...but I did meet the woman who was to eventually become my
wife and Co-Sysop on there...more on that later.
Anyway, this was over 30 years ago, and at that time, there were
BBS's all around the central Arkansas area. Users frequented
from one BBS to the other, playing games, answering messages,
doing file transfers, etc. There were also gatherings of such
groups as "the Central Arkansas Sysops Society" (CASS), where
users and area Sysops gathered at area restaurants for face to
face meetings. It was neat to put faces to names. I thought
that this was a fun hobby, and decided I wanted to be a Sysop.
I started on a TRS-80 Radio Shack 32K Model 100 laptop, with 2
different BBS programs...Softmail and Mini-Net, and a 1200 baud
modem. It could've been called "The World's Smallest BBS". :)
I went online with it on Dec. 1, 1990. I still have the file
with the 2 programs in the BBS's file area.
Then, for my 32nd birthday, a friend of my brothers (I didn't
know him at the time), got me an 8088XT computer, which became
the birthplace of The Thunderbolt BBS. Arkansas Children's
Hospital in Little Rock, was upgrading all their hardware, so I
got it as a present. There was another ham radio BBS in the
area, but not one that also had ham radio and weather. I ran
dial-up for 13 years under GT Power, then went to Synchronet,
and then to Virtual Advanced, to add telnet and web access.
Unfortunately, carelessness of the construction crew out at my
apartment complex in 2005, sliced the phone cables, and that got
rid of dial-up...especially when it cost over $50 for a dial-up
line, that was very noisy.
My main desire on the BBS was for the message areas, the
original theme of the BBS...but I had some files and doorgames
to start with. The woman who I met on the BBS at UALR became a
user, and eventually a Co-Sysop, and eventually my wife. Sadly,
she passed away nearly 10 years ago, but I chose to continue the
BBS in her memory. The funny part was that she loved playing
the games on the BBS, and was a fierce competitor. She was a
great winner, but she sure wass a sore loser.
While I still have ham radio doors on the BBS, I can no longer
have RF gear where I live, so I no longer have a "packet radio
door", where licensed hams could access the Arkansas Packet
Network from my "shack".
With the declining health, and because of doing this for so
long, even though I get very few callers anymore, the BBS is one
of the few hobbies that I can still do...because I enjoy it. I
usually do the message areas FIRST, before going to the
doorgames, file areas, and any other BBS related areas. Sadly,
like all Sysops, I still have to deal with "twits" every so
often...just like dial-up Sysops did over 30 years ago.

The BBS may be ham radio and weather related, but I don't argue
with lightning...especially considering that I'm a 2 time
lightning strike survivor. However, I carry no electrical
charge, and can be handled safely.
