One of our sysops wonders, and somehow I think this question is considered by many of us. Here's one answer, see if you agree. It would be interesting to see other's opinions and thoughts, feel free to send me a netmail or an email for inclusion next week. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 11 No 16 Page 3 April 19, 2017 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================ H U M O R ================================================================ Thank you to Vince Coen for sending this in :) A PRIEST & A RABBI A priest and a rabbi were sitting next to each other on an airplane. The priest turned to the rabbi and asked, "Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?" The rabbi responded,” Yes, that is still one of our laws." The priest then asked, "Have you ever eaten pork?" To which the rabbi replied, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted a ham sandwich." The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading. A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, "Father, is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?" The priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith." The rabbi then asked him, "Father, have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?" The priest replied, "Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke my Faith." The rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silent, but sat thinking for about five minutes. Finally, the rabbi uttered ........... "Sure beats a ham sandwich, doesn't it?" FIDOGAZETTE Vol 11 No 16 Page 4 April 19, 2017 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= A R T I C L E S ================================================================= Why do you run a BBS? By Dan Richter, 1:317/3 This question has been discussed in a couple different networks in recent time. There have been a lot of great answers mentioned by Sysops. Nostalgia seemed to be one of the recurring answers that was mentioned. Most of the Sysops today, also ran BBSs back in the 80s and 90s. It wasn’t as simple to set up and maintain at that time. Back then, we needed a phone line and modem for starters. I won’t even get into all of the programs and doors that we had to get set up and registered. If we wanted to pick up a network, there was a good chance there would be long distance phone calls to obtain the feed, and at the blazing fast speed of high-speed 2400 baud modem, it took a while to transfer. What made it all worth it, at least for me, was having 40-50 callers per day who were active in all aspects of the board. Files were uploaded and downloaded. Message bases were read and replied to. Door games were always busy with daily callers. I even added a paid subscription access which would give more time and download capability, which some users took advantage of. Today, the BBS community is a completely different world than it was back then. Yes, a lot of us have decided to start up our boards again and customize them the way we like. We have connected to networks to gain access to echomail bases and files. We’ve set up door games, and connected some of them for interbbs play. Our connection speeds are so much faster, and our hard drives are larger than what we could obtain back in the day. Instead of having CD-Roms online for files, we copy multiple CDs onto our hard drive. Why do we do it? Let’s face it. At this point, we are not doing it for the users. There aren’t enough of them anymore. There are a handful that will stop in and check out the different BBSs for the sake of nostalgia. These users either never connect again, or they decide they should set up a BBS, and they last for a month or so before disappearing. When I originally set up Castle Rock BBS, back in 1992, I didn’t know a batch file from a GIF file. All I knew is that I could run the shareware version of these BBS programs just fine on my computer. How hard would it be to put it online? With the help of a fellow Sysop, I finally got the hang of batch files, and at one point, had the entire system from mailer and BBS program to door games and utilities all running within one batch file. I was so proud of myself. The amount of knowledge that I gained from running that BBS was phenomenal. Batch files, init strings (I don’t miss those), config files, etc. Before I decided to start up Castle Rock BBS again, I had called around to some other BBSs and looked to see what was happening in the community again. I knew the user base had not come back. I noticed the same user names appearing on all the different boards, and most of them were other Sysops. I re-joined the community to further my knowledge. Not only did I have to remember how everything was set up 20 years ago, but now I had to get it to work with today’s technology. I had to figure out how to get 16 bit door games to run on my 64 bit Win10 system. I then had to get these door games to not look for a serial port, but direct them to a socket. I had to figure out how to direct callers to a specific port instead of a modem’s telephone number. Basically, I needed to get 20+ year old software to run with today’s technology. I did have a lot of questions and received assistance from some great people in the current BBS community. I don’t have a web page yet, and I don’t have FTP access available. I am planning on doing this in the future. I’m just telnet accessible. Yes, I have seen very few callers to the board. At this point, I’m not doing it for the callers. I’m doing this to give me a reason to learn more. Because I’m using Mystic BBS right now, I’m working on re-teaching myself how to program in Pascal, and MPL, which are closely related. I’ve got a book that I will be reading to learn a bit about how to program in Python. Right now, I’ve got a couple of programming projects that are in the works. I feel they will help me, and other Sysops out there. I’m at the point in my life, where I love to learn new things. This hobby gives me the reason to pick up the programming books, or to dive into a different operating system, and learn about them. I had become too complacent with using Windows to surf the net. Instead of reading what someone else had for dinner that night, or how many times they were on the toilet, on social media, I’m working on creating a program that will help other Sysops around the world. For me, not only am I continuing to learn while participating in a hobby I enjoy, but I have the opportunity to help other people around the world to better their understanding of the hobby. As much as I love to have the user base that was around back in the day, I don’t care if I get another call on my board. I’m having fun, and learning something. So, why do you run a BBS? If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! Mailing-List subscriptions via http://www.filegate.net/sub.html but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-200-4076 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net. Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
