I was testing the children in my Glasgow Sunday School class to
see if they understood the concept of 'getting into Heaven'.
I asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big jumble
sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into
Heaven?" "NO!" the children answered. "If I cleaned the church
every day, mowed the garden and kept everything tidy, would that
get me into Heaven?" Again, the answer was a resounding "No!" By
now I was starting to smile. "Well, then, if I was kind to
animals and gave sweeties to all the children, and loved my
husband, would that get me into Heaven?" Again, they all
answered "No!" I was just bursting with pride for them. I
continued, "Then how can I get into Heaven?" A six year old boy
shouted, "Yuv got tae be fukin' dead"

Dusting Off the Legacy Software

I know that there are some out there that probably do not think
that legacy software should be used or upgraded. That there is
no value in the software that built and made Fidonet what it is
today. But I have to disagree... many of us are in this hobby
for the "retro" look of it. Many new people have joined because
the pure text of the BBS has far more content and depth than the
mindless memes and emoji's that clutter the twitterverse and
facebook pages.
Imagine my joy when I discovered one of the oldest BBS softwares
out there is currently under open source re-development. I once
was pretty famous (or was it infamous) about running different
BBS Softwares on some of my node lines. This was back in the
day when I wrote articles for boardwatch using a pen name. Of
course in those days I was actually just finishing high school
and entering Community college. I had reviewed Synchronet,
PCBoard, Wildcat, and yes WWIV. While back in those days WWIV
did not have a fidonet interface, I always liked the feel of it
and it was insanely popular. It had it's own network, WWIVnet,
that thrived due to the fact it was everything that fidonet was
not... it had an underground feel and allowed handles. The
most unusual thing about WWIV was where other software was for
sale either commercially or by shareware, WWIV distributed it's
source code... and encouraged young programmers to "Mod" it
using Turbo Pascal and later Turbo C. Many young programmers
learned how to code using WWIV. Some I can name have very
lucrative jobs in the IT industry to this very day... and it
started with modding WWIV.
When I found out that WWIV has been under development and the
new leadership of the project has integrated Bink-P network
transfers, a telnet server, and a web server I took notice.
This is something that has taken the old software out of the
closet... adding new life into something that many have very
fond memories of.
The team that is developing it are using the GITHUB model, so
like in the old days, you can add enhancements to the project
and it will be added into the core of the software. The focus
at this time seems to be the built-in FTN tosser, which has a
few issues at the moment, but has rapidly fixed the issues as
they arrive.
Because it is open-source under the GITHUB model using the
Apache License, those who have more knowledge with
FTSC-Standards can go examine code and make recommendations, or
better yet can help code it. Open source will only serve to
strengthen the project.
WWIV has a few new features too... with high-bandwidth
connections that did not exist in the 80s-90s during it's
heyday, WWIV now has one of the richest full screen ANSI message
reading interfaces I have ever encountered. It's user
experience is much like Golded, or d'Bridge's reader.
The stock message editor is still just a line editor... and you
will need to install one of the full screen external editors to
bring the experience full circle, editors like TIDE, OPENEDIT
and GEDIT work fine... I've yet to get WWIVEdit to work with it
perhaps someone will be able to help me with this one.

the "unstable" version that has the built in tosser... and take
a walk on the wild side.

And for those who are in the *NIX universe, WWIV will work for
you too. It's came a long way from the old Borland Turbopascal
days... everything old is new once again. I also have a vibe
that for those who run OS/2 the code may be compilable for you
guys too.

when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
