Has anyone noticed a lot more activity on their Telnet ports?
Many modern BBS Softwares will automatically ban ip addresses
that will continuously scan open telnet ports. Most modern BBS
Software is more secure than open router telnet ports.
As a former employee for a major provider, the "Business"
gateways that they install are configured by telnet and
commandline. These gateway devices no matter if they are DSL,
CABLE or FIBER are Vulnerable, especially when the provider uses
a standard, but strong, password to secure them.
One sysop on the net even joked he made an account with the
userid ROOT and password ROOT and let his BBS open up to the
Russian language just to mess with them.
The bots are an annoyance... I have sat here and watched all 15
telnet lines on my system get full with them. This was before I
set up the badip automatic filtration.
Anyhow, heres a very good article posted on March 31 2016 from
the IDG news service, this article pretty much explains the
sudden increase in telnet port activity that we all have
witnessed lately.

Your router could succumb to a new Telnet worm
The worm takes advantage of exposed Telnet services with weak
passwords to infect routers and other embedded devices building
botnets made up of routers, modems, wireless access points and
other networking devices doesn't require sophisticated exploits.
Remaiten, a new worm that infects embedded systems, spreads by
taking advantage of weak Telnet passwords.
Remaiten is the latest incarnation of distributed
denial-of-service Linux bots designed for embedded
architectures. Its authors actually call it KTN-Remastered,
where KTN most likely stands for a known Linux bot called
Kaiten. When scanning for new victims, Remaiten tries to
connect to random IP addresses on port 23 (Telnet) and if the
connection is successful, it attempts to authenticate using
username and password combinations from a list of commonly used
credentials, researchers from ESET said in a blog post.
If the authentication succeeds, the bot executes several
commands to determine the system's architecture. It then
transfers a small downloader program compiled for that
architecture that proceeds to download the full bot from a
command-and-control server.
The malware has versions for mips, mipsel, armeabi and
armebeabi. Once installed it connects to an IRC (Internet Relay
Chat) channel and waits for commands from attackers.
The bot supports a variety of commands for launching different
types of denial-of-service attacks. It can also scan for
competing DDoS bots on the same system and uninstall them.
It's surprising that many networking devices still use Telnet
for remote management, instead of the more secure SSH protocol.
It's also unfortunate that many devices ship with Telnet service
open by default.
Device owners should use one of the many free online port
scanning tools to check if their router has port 23 open and
should try to shut down the Telnet service from the device's
Web-based administration interface. Unfortunately many gateway
devices provided by ISPs to their customers don't give users
full access to the management features.

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)
Write an article!
If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
