"Seymour Papert, whose ideas and inventions transformed how
millions of children around the world create and learn, died
Sunday, July 31, 2016 at his home in East Blue Hill, Maine. He
was 88.
Papert’s career traversed a trio of influential movements: child
development, artificial intelligence, and educational
technologies. Based on his insights into children’s thinking
and learning, Papert recognized that computers could be used not
just to deliver information and instruction, but also to empower
children to experiment, explore, and express themselves. The
central tenet of his Constructionist theory of learning is that
people build knowledge most effectively when they are actively
engaged in constructing things in the world. As early as 1968,
Papert introduced the idea that computer programming and
debugging can provide children a way to think about their own
thinking and learn about their own learning."

I was introduced to the work of Seymour Papert through my
children's school. Papert's work with the Logo language and
young children was amazing to me. The little turtle that could
enabled kids to not only create and design complex images, but
taught recursion and programming in a way unheard of before the
Logo language hit the scene. Papert was an amazing man.

A Bad Greeter...
So, after landing a job at Wal Mart as a greeter, I lasted less
than a day.
About two hours into my shift, a very loud, unattractive,
mean-looking woman walked into the store with her two kids,
yelling obscenities at them all the way through the entrance.
I said pleasantly "Good morning, ma'am, and welcome to Wal Mart.
Nice children you have there Are they twins?"
The ugly woman stopped yelling at them just long enough to say:
"Hell no, they aren't twins. The oldest one is nine and the
other one is seven.
Why the hell would you think that they were twins. Are you blind
or stupid?"
I replied "I am neither blind or stupid. I just couldn't believe
that someone slept with you twice. Have a good day, and thank
you for shopping at Wal Mart."

Where to Send Your Articles
Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)
Write an article!
If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
your article off at:

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
