Ward Dossche is away on vacation right now.. and just as murphy
insists, as soon as Ward left home, his system decided to ignore the
basics of good behaviour (well, as far as Fidonet Systems go ).
Luckily though he must have been anticipating the worst, since the
Zone 2 segment for this week's nodelist did indeed arrive in my
inbound directory. What gremlin Ward left watching his system is
unknown, but luckily for our Zone 2 friends, it looks like his system
will indeed produce a difference file and nodelist on Thursday night.

The Old School Toolbox

Data storage, the Future, Archiving, etc.
So here I am, the old curmudgeon with tendencies toward luddite in
a profession where thinking about such issues is important. In
brushing up against the topic I find myself listening in on some
fascinating discussions between folks who work in other fields as
well. Of course we sysops have always had an interest in backup and
archival strategies, etc for obvious reasons.
Not just are these issues important to folks in the audio and video
industries as well as sysops, but they're quickly becoming the most
important issue in the information technology world, tied for first
place with security. IN fact, they're both two halves of the same
issue, data integrity and access.
This wrestling match has always been with us, but as the types of
data we wish to preserve vary more we're left with some even larger
questions. Back in the days when Fidonet was that place to connect
for average folks you had essentially two choices, other than raid
hard drive arrays. They were piles of floppy disks, and tapes of
various types. Then came zip drives, jaz drives, etc.
No matter what the media you still have the same wrestling matches
with data integrity and cataloging. Not just do you need to back
up that data, but then you need to know which version of it you've
got where. This is extremely important for medical institutions
and similar facilities where the integrity of patient/customer
records is the driving factor.
I never had the money for a raid array back then, and I did
understand about the need for off site storage, a lesson I failed
to heed just before hurricane Katrina much to my sorrow. I will
always wish I had the research for a book I'd been working on.
some of the interviews conducted for that research were with people
who had died. I can't go interview them again. That zip file with
all that data wouldn't fit on a 1.4 mb floppy.
So what does the pro who works with large files whose integrity
must be retained do? In my professional life I sidestep the
question in many ways. If I'm doing recording for a client, and
not sound for immediate use such as broadcast or for the audience
I deliver the work to the client on regular hard drives, and hope
that he migrates that data soon enough to ensure that he can indeed
get it from that hard drive. If he waits to long it might not spin
up properly. Then he's got the problems of cataloging and
archival. We'll come back to this question later, but first let's
look at physical media. Of course I"m looking at this primarily
from the point of view of someone in my profession. Often the
files we need to move from place to place are quite large.
What about cd-r and dvd-r disks? Home burned cd and dvd disks are
not as robust as those created from glass masters at the factory,
and not as reliable. Also, consider 24 tracks of high resolution
audio, 44.1 khz 16 bit or higher sampling rate. Let's look at 44.1
khz 16 bit for an example. That's the sampling rate of that
commercial cd of the latest Stones album you might have bought. So
consider that stones album, mixed and mastered in stereo. If you
were to capture the tunes on that Stones cd as .wav files you'll
need 5.5 mb per track minute, or 11 mb/minute for each song you
wished to capture. So take a song, 24 tracks of audio for this one
song, each recorded at 44.1 khz 16 bit. Again, 5.5 mb/track
minute. The song runs for 4 minutes.
That 4 minute song needs 528 mb of storage for just the 24 tracks
of audio data, not counting the additional data inherent in
broadcast .wav files which enable them to be synchronized later.
so let us say that the client recorded 10 songs, and that's the
average length of each, some more, some less, but they average 4
minutes in length each.
you need at least 5 gb now to store it. Quite the undertaking for
cd-r or dvd-r disks.
All backed up and no place to go
Picture yourself as the archivist for CBS records, or WArner
brothers, or Disney studios, or, God forbid, the Smithsonian or
library of congress. You can back this stuff up, but unless you
migrate it to newer forms of storage, or retrieve that backed up
data occasionally you can't be sure those usb drives spin, or those
cd-r disks are readable. Then there's the obsolescence issue.
Jaz drives anyone?
Those portable hard drives might not spin when you need them, so
you better check 'em out occasionally if you really need what they
contain. Cd-r and dvd media might not play a couple years down the
road, as some have found. If it won't "play" you can't get the
data it contains. If you want to be sure you can access it, keep
'er spinnin' and make 'er part of a raid array.
So now we bring this home to the BBS world. Drop me a routed mail,
tell me about your backup and archival strategies. After all,
you've got those message bases, many of which are just chatter and
archival is meaningless, but some you might wish to preserve in
perpetuity. Then there are your carefully assembled files
collections, bbs configuration files, special batch and .cmd files,
scripts, software key files, etc. We'll talk more about them, and
some of the thoughts of the pros from the world of the heavy
hitters in data storage and archival over the next few columns.
But first, a little history lesson next time.
A friend used to have a little statement in his email sig file
which stated that the amazing thing about data storage technology
was the ability to lose larger and larger amounts of data at one
fell swoop, a wrong command line, or other such "accidents." A
scary thought, isn't it? So we'll look into the past (this is the
old school toolbox after all) then hopefully have some anecdotes
from today's fidonet sysops to share in future columns in this
series.

Pyblosxom is a python language program, so if you have python
installed, it may work fine for you even if you are not running
linux (I should try that on my windows laptop ).

Going dairy free doesn't have to be horrible. It's something we have
to deal with over here since my daughter and at least two of her sons
can't touch the stuff. I also benefit from not using as many dairy
products as I used to, that's for sure.
This recipe is great for who are sensitive to dairy and gluten as
well.
Ice Cream Pie
=========================
Ingredients:
Almond pie shell (below)
Almond Ice Cream (below)
about 2 cups fresh blueberries, sprinkled with sugar
Ingredients for the Pie Crust:
1 1/2 cups slivered almonds, ground
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tsp. grated lemon zest
2 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 Tbsp. water
Preheat the oven to 350F
Grind the almonds in a food processor or blender. Add the other
ingredients and mix well. Press into the bottom of a deep dish pie
tin. Bake the pie crust for about 7 minutes. Don't let it over
brown. Cover, cool and put the crust in the freezer to get it really
cold.
Ingredients for the Almond Milk Ice Cream
=========================================
1 qt. unsweetened Almond milk (they sell sweetened and unsweetened)
5 eggs
1 Tablespoon sugar (some people use none)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (we use one from the health food store,
that has no alcohol since the kids can't have whatever they use
for the alcohol)
Beat the eggs until really fluffy, add the sugar and beat some more.
Heat the almond milk to warm, then beat it into the eggs - keep
beating so the eggs don't curdle. Cook the mixture on low heat,
stirring constantly until it hits 170F and coats the wooden spoon
your stirring it with. Chill the mix in the refrigerator, covered,
over night. Put the mix into an electric ice cream maker to freeze..
Let freeze over night until firm. If you don't have an ice cream
maker, you can just freeze it in the mixing bowl and then beat it to
death with a strong mixer the next morning, and then freeze it again.

Assembling the pie:
===================
Take the ice cream out of the freezer for about an hour to soften it
up some. Place half the softened ice cream in the chilled pie shell,
spreading it evenly to the edges. Top with about 3/4's of berries.
Cover the berries with the rest of the ice cream, and sprinkle the
remaining berries on top.
Cover the ice cream pie with plastic wrap, and freeze for about 5-6
hours until firm.

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
something of consequence here :)

(If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net).
Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
