Volume IV Number III March, 2010 ======================================================================= Editorial ========= This month we have new releases of ALLFIX available - that is such great news. Thanks to Bob Seaborn for helping make this possible. I'm sure the folks in the allfix_help echo know more about this update than I do... but it's really great to see this piece of software being updated and not abandoned. See related announcement in this issue. Too bad Bob isn't sending new releases out via the filegate.. all those old versions are still sitting all over creation on every Fidonet sysop's hard drives.. (Bob? You there? (grin) ) Notes from the Z1C: ================== Region 14's RC, Jeff Smith has had a health setback which prevents him from participating in Fidonet for the time being. His family is not sure whether he'll be back or not.. I know Jeff had mentioned retiring from the RC position as some point in the future to me, so at least I was somewhat mentally prepared for his leaving. I hope his health improves in any case! But we'll miss you Jeff! Jeff was always there to help new nodes in his region, giving his time and knowledge whenever needed. Region 14 nodes who are not connected to an echomail feed should contact myself at 1:261/38 ( janis @ filegate . net) or Ross Cassell at 1:123/500, or Bob Seaborn at 1:140/1. You should connect to the following regional echos: R14_CHAT R14_RC R14_REC R14_POST - - Once you are connected either netmail me at 1:261/38, or say HELLO in the R14_CHAT echo. Hopefully we'll get an election for a new RC going there soon. If that doesn't work out, I'll be appointing the new RC. Thanks to all who are helping "lost" members get reconnected.. our usual suspects that I know are helping out are Ross Cassell, Bob Seaborn and Richard Webb. Thanks again for providing links to these echos. Page 1 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! She took off for California after college and as a result, I'd see her much too infrequently...But when she came home, boy did she bring great presents haha.. When she was still living in NYC, she brought me my first Dylan album (his first, still have it, thank goodness).. Then once she was living in LA, she brought me my first Doors album.. (Jim Morrison hadn't made it to the east coast music charts yet) - one time she brought me dolls from Greece since the film she was working on was shot there.. When they were shooting in Australia, she brought me a boomerang :) When she'd come home, and she'd always insist on cooking for Mom and the rest of us. She had to show us the new recipes she'd found - I've never forgotten this one. ===California Hamburger=== 1 lb. ground round or lean hamburger tomato, sliced lettuce, broken into leaves large onion, sliced mayonaisse garlic powder salt, pepper Make 1/4 lb hamburger patties. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder, then salt and pepper both sides lightly. Place burgers in frying pan and cook for about 3-5 minutes per side depending on how thick your burger is. In the hamburger roll, put mayonaisse on top inside of the bun. Cover the mayonaisse with a few leaves of lettuce, then slices of tomato. Put the burger in the roll, add the onion and but the hamburger roll bottom on it. You can slather more mayonaisse on the inside of the bottom of the roll :) ===California Curry=== 2 tablespoons butter 1 1/2 pounds lamb, cut into 1" pieces 1 tablespoon flour 2 onions, chopped 4 cloves of garlic, minced 2 8oz. containers of plain yogurt or yogurt with mandarin orange fruit 2 cans mandarin oranges in light syrup, drained (you can buy fresh oranges, but peeling the segments can be time consuming. All the pith needs to be removed (carefully (g)) 2-4 tablespoons curry powder according to how strong you like your curry. Make sure you buy the freshest curry powder you can find, or make your own. 1 tablespoon paprika salt, pepper Melt the butter in a 10" saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is translucent and the garlic is golden. Toss the lamb with the flour. Add the meat to the onions and garlic. Brown the meat for about 5 minutes. Add the curry powder and paprika. Salt and pepper generously. When the meat is well coated and the spices are infused well, add about 1 cup of water. Simmer covered for about an hour, stirring now and again. When the meat is tender, stir in the plain yogurt and reduce the heat to very very low (don't let the yogurt boil). Add the mandarin orange segments and stir gently. Remove from heat. Serve immediately. Have ready: rice. Have on the table the following condiments: grated sweetened Coconut bananas, sliced 8 oz. can chunk pineapple, drained dried fruit like raisins chopped onion chopped walnuts Fresh chopped tomatoes Have guests place rice on serving dishes, cover with spoons of curry, and top with condiments (the more the better :) ) =#= Page 4 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! Volume IV Number III March, 2010 ======================================================================= The Old School Toolbox By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 In defense of good ol' pots I penned this piece late in the fall of 2009 just after hurricane Ida threatened the gulf coast. However, with the winter we've been having here in Fidonet zone 1 I"m sure other folks are experiencing the intermittent connection blues as I was. THe internet has changed the way we move mail in fidonet over the years, and we all know that for the most part this has been an improvement for most of us. But, there are times when good ol' pots might be the only solution. Back in late October I started having difficulties with my regular telephone system. I pick up the handset and it sounds like a bowl of that famous Kelloggs cereal, snap crackle pop. Modem connect speeds started suffering. every time it rained I didn't get PEnnies from heaven as the old song says, but I got intermittent connections with the modem, such poor connections that sometimes I couldn't even talk to somebody on the phone. Yes I have international communications here at the flip of a switch via ham radio, but that isn't going to get my lady timely help if the power goes out and she finds her supplies of bottled oxygen limited. That isn't going to help her summon an ambulance in a timely fashion if she needs one. So, I call the telco folks and tell them this is unacceptable. The telco folks don't come, and they don't come some more. THe winds die down, conditions dry up and the line quality returns to somewhat acceptable. Finally the telco tech comes out, after calling ten minutes before he's going to arrive. I'm in a city 50 miles away on business at the time. Needless to say, he doesn't find or solve the problem. Meanwhile another windy spell, another wet spell. COnnection speeds suffer. My dial-up internet connection is so flaky I can't even download my email. My connections with my fidonet links aren't much better, but the robust variant of zmodem and compressed mail provides something I can't get from my internet connection. REliability. My fidonet mail still comes through, although with multiple attempts necessary at times to download it all. I became accustomed to seeing badwazoo.* in my protected inbound there for awhile. Binkd or binkp wouldn't have helped me stay connected during this problem. Neither would email tunneling. The extra layers required by the exchange of packets would have meant my connection bombed out, and I was now out of touch. But people that really needed to make email contact with me could use my alternate email address via my fidonet links and reach me. After almost a month of this problem I got extremely tired of all this, and reminded the telco folks that I pay a good chunk of my limited income for my flat rate long distance, voicemail services, internet, the whole ball of wax. I like my landline service. IT's reliable when cell sites are overwhelmed with business. IT gives me a dial tone when the power is out all around me. MOst times it provides me reliable voice and data connections with the rest of the world. The poor technician who finally responded to my vociferous complaining went to my demarcation box outside my home and hooked up his test set. I stood listening with him as the snap crackle pop was quite apparent. I reminded him that retaining a satisfied customer was contingent upon his success at finding the problem. Up the line a half mile or so he found a problem in the cabling. I think he switched me to a pair which didn't have the problem. Connections are once again good. An internet connection couldn't be maintained in that environment, but the robust protocols and error correction provided by our tried and true fidonet schemes developed in the days when everybody was pots only, and that's all there was kept me connected. Compressed mail bundles and good old zedzap kept me in touch with family and friends. I might not have been able to hear mom on the phone, but I could at least read her email. I may not have had regular internet email to continue my work of recruiting volunteers to man ham radio circuits if Hurricane Ida had done her worst on the gulf coast. But, thanks to good ol' fidonet and pots I was able to muster stand by resources to help those folks if Ida had done damage on the gulf coast. Sometimes the tried true and tested is the only tool you've got which is reliable enough to get the job done. Thanks to FIdonet and those developers of yesteryear for helping me to remain productive and in touch. =#= Page 5 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! I'd MUCH rather you sent in material but I think until someone starts a discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards (just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin) So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Don't be offended.. write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about the dullard aspect of you guys and gals (bg), feel free to drop your article off at: By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer (don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).
