    Editorial: Zone Meanderings
	==============================
There has been some discussion of Zone activity/Inactivity in one
particular echo where Z2 members hang out :)

A South American ISP seems to cut out access to a ZC's site now and
again to some Z2 members, meanwhile the site is able to poll my system
consistenly and send and receive mail from my system in the U.S. more
    often than not.

    So what does this mean?

To some in the echo, because some router may be down between their
system and Z4, Z4 therefore must be "MIA", or at least near to
    extinction (geez).

I disagree, since I can see quite literally LIFE and connectivity
here with Z4C's system, and with at least one other node from Zone 4
who polls my system daily... hardly MIA. Proof of Z4's
"soon-to-be-demise" was also commented on since a returning node in
Brazil is having a little trouble getting the attention of the Z4C,
et. al. in order to get nodelisted. Meanwhile, I was quickly able to
crash Z4Cs system and ask him about that returning node.. which he
already knew about, and said would be nodelisted 'shortly'. That was
    all I needed to hear.

Now does that mean that this node will be listed in this week's
    nodelist? I don't know, as I don't know what complications Z4C and
others in Z4 may have encountered with this returning node or with
their own software that particular week ... which
is the main point here :) WE don't live there. WE don't know what is
going on. It's NONE of our business in Zone 1, nor is it the business
of Zone 2 sysops. [note: the node was listed that week (grin)]

Some would be quick to say that a system that is Down, is always
their business because it affects his system (meanwhile neither Z4C
nor the returning node connect to these detractors for direct or
routed mail, so I have to ask, why make such a stink ? about a node
who is at the mercy of his ISP.. about a node who can still receive
mail that is routed, and crash mail from his uplink... I understand
that they do have a "thing" in Z2 about Direct mail... and I also know
that is one of the differences between Z1 and Z2.. meanwhile NO where
in policy 4 is Crash mail mentioned as a requirement for membership.
Netmail, yes. Crash Mail, No. As a matter of fact, there is no
mention of having to receive mail from 'any' system in Fidonet in
Policy 4, unless you have promised to route mail for a node. Then we
are talking something altogether different.. but that is not what
these detractors had been speaking about.

This month I was helping another sysop to get reconnected to Fidonet..
he's from New Zealand and his problems were not ISP related.. but the
system he was trying to connect to might as well have been 'down' from
the returning sysop's side of things... no response, week after week
from the system he was polling (one of the RCs near to where he
lives). The problem was 'no one's fault' to speak of.. just a set of
circumstances that existed "over there".. which people in Z2 (and
people like those in this echo could know nothing about because they
weren't involved... This node in Z3 was sent to me by some people who
knew I ran Linux like he did.. He needed simply to be brought up to
speed on current internet protocols, and he needed some information
from his RC to connect there, which he obviously didn't know about. So
I was kind of the 'middle-man' helping to pass information between the
two systems until they could communicate directly.

Which brings me to my final point... Yes, it is important to mark
nodes/regions/nets down if they are MIA.. but if you don't live in an
area, your knowledge of the problems in an area so large as Z4 must be
_minimal_... unless you speak to someone from that zone directly..
someone knowledgable yet (g). Certainly, you cannot know all of the problems in an area
unless you make a telephone voice call to that nodes' internet
provider... which I doubt very much was done. AND certainly you can
not know what is involved in problems with connections unless you are
    personally involved in a situation.

Final great note.. this evening a young Chinese woman spent the better
part of an hour with me helping her get set up as point over here...
could it be the return of Zone 6 on the way?? I sure hope so!!!
What will those sourpusses in that echo say should Zone 6 return I
wonder :) :) Ok, not getting my hopes up yet, really, but I'm really
happy to have this point setting up here.

    Ed.

Don Plesky, R11C, has resigned his position, but will be missed by all
in the region. Don was appointed to this position during some very
rough times for R11, and Don agreed to help out when I asked him to
take this on this job. I appreciate his taking on the job when he
did, and sticking with it as he did. Thanks for your dedication to
    Fidonet, Don!

Since Don had some serious hardware problems this summer, he found it
necessary to retire as RC, and so I've appointed Jame Clay as the new
R11C. Again, many thanks to Don for persevering as long as he was
able to, and to Jame for agreeing to take over this position.

    The Slightly Crusty Sysop
	Sean Dennis
	1:18/200

	September 2009

Wow, August flew by. I certainly won't miss the heat and humidity we
had to suffer from here as the days are turning cooler and the nights
just a little crisper. I turned 37 on the 27th and quite frankly, I
don't feel any older. Good things are afoot here at the Dennis
household and it's nice to have something positive to look forward to,
	especially in today's socioeconomic climate.

I do actually have something Fidonet-related to talk about in this
column-the "deadwood" in the Fidonet nodelist. By "deadwood", I mean:
all of the systems that seem to be on auto-pilot and that don't
actually contribute anything to Fidonet in the way of messages or
activity; systems that no longer even answer when called; systems that
are marked "down" with no real plans to come back online or sysops who
have just killed their systems with no notice.

Once, a long time ago, I was Region 11 Coordinator (RC11). At the
time I was starting to go through my section of the Fidonet nodelist
and began to start pruning out the "deadwood". I was suddenly being
yelled at by other sysops in the region for doing my job and removing
systems that were no longer around. Unfortunately, I had to resign
the position immediately before I had the chance to actually complete
what I was doing. A quick look in the current Fidonet nodelist seems
to confirm that no one else has bothered removing the junk cluttering
that region's section of the nodelist either.

It's just not R11 of course. I know of one BBS in my region that is
still listed in the Fidonet nodelist that doesn't exist. All it'd
take is a simple edit job and one less non-existant system would be
gone. This problem seems to be all over Fidonet in each and every
zone. Zone 1 seems to have a lot of deadwood in it. I can't speak
about Zone 2 as I don't call Russia POTS as a matter of financial
impunity. \ But let's all realize the truth of the matter is that
Fidonet is not as big as that nodelist likes to make it.

I think as part of Fidonet's survival, we need to get down to brass
tacks and remove people who are no longer part of Fidonet. What good
is it to someone to send mail to a system that is no longer
maintained? What good does it serve the active part of Fidonet to have
all of this extra weight hanging around its neck (this can also go for
the echo backbone, but that's for another column)?

Alas, this is but a singular opinion, it seems, from discussing this
with other "people of position" in Fidonet. There are some who know
this pruning needs to happen but there are more that can't let go of
Fidonet's illustrious (or infamous, you pick) past with BBS systems
that have long passed the point of just being a rotten, dying branch
	on the Fidonet tree trunk.

That's all I have to say on the subject for now. As always, your
opinions, not your flames, are welcomed. You may contact me via
netmail (this is preferred) at 1:18/200 or via email at
	sean@nsbbs.info.

It's a great combination with the article I had prepared already for
the Food Section :) - Good timing Dan! :)

I found this online and it sounded pretty good:

	Cinnamon-Cornbread Cobbler with Blueberries
	3 X 5
	4 X 6

	Active Time: 10 Minutes
	Total Time: 50 Minutes
	Yield: Serves 12

I love the way corn and blueberries taste together. This takes just
minutes to make and is great with vanilla ice cream.

	RECIPE INGREDIENTS
	For the Filling:
	8 cups blueberries, rinsed
1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar, depending on the sweetness of the fruit
	2 tablespoons lemon juice
	For the Topping:
	1 cup cornmeal
	3/4 cup all-purpose flour
	1/2 cup sugar
	2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
	1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
	1/4 teaspoon salt
	3/4 cup buttermilk
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
	1 egg, slightly beaten

Cinnamon-Cornbread Cobbler with Blueberries Recipe at Cooking.com
	DIRECTIONS FOR THE FILLING:
Heat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Toss the blueberries with the sugar and lemon juice. Pour into a
	13-by-9-inch oval baking dish.

	FOR THE TOPPING:
Combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt
in a mixing bowl. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk,
melted butter, and beaten egg. Stir with a wooden spoon to blend and
then mix with a fork only until the batter comes together.

Drop the batter by spoonfuls on top of the blueberries in the pan.
Bake the cobbler for 40 to 45 min, or until the filling is bubbly and
the topping is firm when pressed.

We All Scream for Ice Cream by Janis Kracht
    ===========================

It's the middle of August right now and as I'm preparing the September
issue of FidoGazette, all I can think of is ICE CREAM since we're
getting high temperatures of 90+F here this week! So, using my
ancient (well, pretty old.. I'd say it's over 20 years old) ice cream
maker, I am planning on preparing some the following recipes below :)
The Ice Cream maker is made by RICHMOND CEDAR WORKS (or RCW Co.) in
Virginia, USA. The Wooden bucket has an electric motor which rotates
the metal can inside the wooden bucket, and of course in the metal can
is a large beater which stays stationary in the can while the can
revolves. It makes a gallon of GREAT ice cream in about 25 minutes,
and I'm sorry the company has gone out of business. You just don't
get great ice cream from some of the newer electric Ice Cream makers
where you must freeze the bucket before operating ... yep, I have one
of those as well, and that machine makes two quarts of a softer ice
    cream in about 20 minutes.

I think you can still find RCW's ice cream maker on sites like EBay,
but once the parts wear out, I doubt you'll be able to find them :(
Luckily, my RCW ice cream maker and all of it's parts have held up
really well all these years. This ice cream maker uses the old
fashioned way of making ice cream with ice and rock salt, in layers in
the wooden bucket surrounding the can and beater.

Instructions for the RCW Ice Cream maker:

Use crushed ice cubes or crushed store-bought ice. The finer the
ice is crushed, the better it is since the machine is made to
      operate with crushed ice.

       A. In packing, put about three inches of ice in
tub all around can, and sprinkle about 3 oz. of
tablesalt. or 5 oz. of rock salt, evenly over ice.

       B. Continue adding ice and salt (in the above
proportions) layer by layer, until tub is filled
up to, but not over, top of can.

       C. When tub is half full, (approx. 2 layers of ice
and salt) pour one cup of cold water over the ice
and salt mixture. This will help the ice to melt
and settle, which will shorten freezing time, and
will help keep ice from jamming and causing
stops. After tub is filled, pour another cup of cold
water over the ice and salt.

    Dr. DeBug Answers Your Questions!
    =================================
     By drdebug @ filegate.net

If you'd like your question to appear here, just send an email to
drdebug at filegate.net, or netmail to drdebug at 1:261/38.100.

How do I add my software to the FileGate Distribution?
    ======================================================

The FileGate Distribution system feeds files to all of Fidonet's
zones so that everyone in Fidonet can enjoy them. If you have a
hobby of collecting certain types of files, for instance, utilities
for Windows, or utilities for DOS or utilities for Linux, photographs
of horses, etc. etc .. then perhaps some other people would also
like to share your collection. This is the basis of the IFDC
Filegate Distribution network (sm). BTW, sm is an abbreviation of
"service mark", not an abbreviation for a smile as I was once asked :)

One person collects files of interest most likely to them, such
as programming files... For instance, I started my very first bbs in
1981 or so, when I was teaching myself to program computers.

Having a bbs let me share the files I created with others in the
community (this was before I even heard of Fidonet) and it allowed me
to collect programming files I found across the country. It was
rough doing that though back then, because at the time most of those
other sites required you to UPLOAD a C source code file in order to
DOWNLOAD one.. quite painful if you are just learning C (a
programming language). With my bbs running (it was some mono-colored
Unix bbs software, who's name I'll never remember :) ), I was able to
get some of my code online and offered it to the public ...
eventually people started coming to my site for code, tutorials, and
    the like.

And so if you have some files of interest to you, chances are they
will be of interest to someone else. As far as caveats, you must
    agree to the following:

No XXX rated stuff, and no copyrighted material which you don't have
permission to distribute from the matierial's authorized agent.

All software or images you send should be tested with a good virus
program. My system uses f-prot for instance :)

Anything which you send through your FDN must be "removable" by you..
in other words, you should be willing to track it down (with our help
of course) to remove any 'illegal' files which might find their way
into the system which may happen now and again (not often!). The way
we take care of such problems is to release a file with the same name
as the offending file, but with 0 length (no content) and with a
file_id.diz that simply says, "Please remove this file".

And lastly, files that you send through your FDN should go through
only your FDN, not also sent out to three other Photo or doornet
FDN's for instance (g) This is important because even though a lot
of us use the internet these days, bandwidth is still bandwidth..and
multiple instances of files wastes bandwidth no matter how you cut it
     (smile).

We put an archive header on our files telling people where they came
from, here's what it looks like:

    =====================================================================
IFDC FileGate Project Archive (c) 1994-2009

Distributed by The IFDC FileGate Project (sm)

For more information about the Project please visit
    http://www.filegate.net

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

The last line wrapped in the archive comment due to the margins of
this newsletter, but hopefully if you examine the archives that arrive
from your filegate feed, you will see the entire header if you type
unzip -v filename.zip on a command line. From what I understand, some
archivers like winzip don't display archive headers, though. You may
also notice that some FDN Coordinators append their own comment file
to the IFDC FileGate comment file, and that's just fine as well..
These archive comments just provide more information. They are
applied to common archivers like so:

    	zip:

	    zip -z filename.zip \< [\path\commentfile.txt]

    	rar:

	    rar c filename.rar -z[\path\commentfile.txt]

Now you just need to decide what files you will distribute. Let's say
you or a friend loves to make impressive digital designs and
wants to get them "out there". All you'd need to do is contact me at
1:261/38 or email me and we set you up over here to start delivering
files to FileGate HQ. From 1:261/38, the files go to the FileGate
HUBs and BACKBONE Stars (see filegate.zxx for the complete list).

IFDC FDN members use a "one way in" approach, rather than letting
anyone in Fidonet release files because that offers the most
protection from duplicate files going through our systems, and also
    keeps virus and trojans out.

The IFDC FileGate has a policy document you can download an read.
    It's located here: http://www.filegate.net/info/FGPOL006.TXT
It essentially says about the same thing as above (g).

    Processing HATCH:
    ================
You'll need software to release your files as well. There are a
number of packages to do so. BBBS includes a hatch with replace or
    just hatch command..

    BBBS
    ====
You would set up the area in BBBS as normal:

    F PDNJAVA /home/ftp/pub/pdn/pdnjava/ 1:261/38 VA 1:10/3 1:123/500 1:140/1

You'd make sure that your links (10/3, 123/500 and 140/1) had the F
    flag in external.bbb [nodes] section.

    [nodes]
    1:123/500 password password password password F C 2
    [...]

Put the file to release in the directory where you defined the
area (here, home/ftp/pub/pdn/pdnjava). Log into the bbs and import
the file with des -a filename.zip. Then you'd simply type:

    ./bbbs bhatch -oldfile.zip /home/ftp/pub/pdn/pdnjava/newfile.zip

The - tells bbbs to hatch with replace. If you don't need to replace
a file, you can leave the -oldfile.zip out.

    TICK
    ====
Tick v210 is still being used in fidonet today by
a number of sysops (see http://www.filegate.net/mail/tick210.zip).

Setting up tick to run under a DOS box is pretty easy. Here's an
example of a config file that should work for you with just a few
    changes:

    ===================clip====TIC.CFG====
    IN c:\tick\inbound
    ZONE 1 c:\tick\outbound
    NET 261
	NODE 38
	HOLD c:\tick\holdir

	ListFmt %3:-13 %1
	ListName Files.Bbs
	QUIET
	TEMP c:\tick\ramdisk
	LOGPATH
	LOGSEEN
	CRC
	LogCRC
	Crc2Dup
	DupByCRC
	NoWait
	Local
	MailerKills
	REPLACE
	FDLog
	ForceINTL
	FIDO

	AREA c:\tick\files\nodelist NODELIST
    	Local Listname c:\tick\files\nodelist\files.bbs
	    1:261/1 PASSWORD &*

	AREA c:\tick\files\lordfile LORDFILE
    	 Local Listname c:\tick\files\lordfile\files.bbs
	     1:261/1 PASSWORD &*

    =====Clip===End=TICK.CFG====================

Make you sure you note the changes needed above: Your node number,
all paths/directories where you want files, etc., and downlinks and
    their passwords :)

    ALLFIX
    ======
Allfix is also still in use by a good number of people.

    ALLFIX File Manager

Allfix file echo processor, is stand-alone shareware program and
can be used with most BBS Systems. AllFixuses a config program
(ASETUP) that you run to make changes to the config file. ASETUP's
interface is much like the FrontDoor mailer's config program - the set
up cannot be done in an ASCII config file.

The ASETUP main screen leads you to different manager menus for
different parts of the program, such as node manager, file echo
manager, and group manager, etc. In each of these managers, you enter
	information for that manager.

In Node manager, you enter the node numbers, passwords and mail flavor
of those who will be calling your system.

The File Echo Manager allows you to view or change the actual tag
names, add description of the tags and indicate where the files are to
	be stored.

If you want to use them, the Groups manager will allow you to remove
or change similar file echos, or groups of echos.

Allfix saves all the information in a database. One thing you
might want to do often is backup your allfix directory... after
entering all of that information, you sure wouldn't want to lose it
and have to re-enter it .

    INFO:
    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material but I think until someone starts a
discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals (bg), feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis@filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652

    1:261/100 filegate.net via telnet mailer
filegate.net via binkp mailer (don't send
articles as routed attaches, send them
    direct to filegate.net).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way \. Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of \).

More specifics with this issue :)

To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to drdebug at
filegate.net, or netmail drdebug at 1:261/38.100, or post in the
	fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your
bbs listing to bbslist@filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette
	echo! :)
