We hope everyone in the USA had a very Happy Thanksgiving! Onward
to the Christmas and Hanukkah Holidays :) Forgive the short (and late
:() issue this month as I actually try to keep up with all of it
    (smile).

I've also been trying to implement qwk uploading of msg. packets in
the web interface of BBBS.. so if you see strange messages laying
about the PDNECHO and BBBS.ENGLISH echo, it's me (grin).. if ANYONE
has gotten this to work, please let me know :)

Is Your Favorite Echo an Orphan? Part III.

If you're not a system or point operator but have decided
that you wish to moderate a backbone echo your learning
curve isn't quite over yet at this point. You're going to
wish to acquire and make use of the FIdonet nodelist. If
you're a Silver Xpress offline reader user SX has
S capabilities to utilize the nodelist and perform lookups.
Other qwk readers might not offer this capability. However,
looking up systems in the raw nodelist using a garden
variety ascii file editor or viewer can be a bit of a
daunting process. You'll want to take it in bite sized
chunks. You can't just type the address of the system you're
looking for into the window that pops up on your text editor
or viewer when you use its search capabilities. But, it can
be done with a bit of diligence.

If you're using earlier versions of windows than XP or Vista
you might be able to make use of a handy batch file written
by Paul Quinn from the batpower echo. IF your friendly host
sysop carries the bfds file echo you can download it there
as NL_SERCH.ZIP and then acquire the other programs it needs
to operate. However, if you're running later versions of
windows it won't run in a dos box for you as it requires the
use of environment variables, something you don't have
     available to you.

So Paul's handy nodelist searching tool won't work for you.
You can still find out where that new echo poster is hosted
if he/she doesn't appear to be a sysop. You'll need the raw
nodelist, and a bit of patience. To illustrate, let us say
that a poster from my system is of concern to you in the
conference you moderate. so, you decide to look up the
fidonet address he's posting from to see who the system
     operator is, etc.

As I noted earlier, you can't just type in 1:116/901 when
you bring up your editor or viewer's search function. THe
nodelist isn't laid out to facilitate that sort of
searching. You know I'm in zone 1 however, and if you too
are in zone 1 then the nodelist you acquired is going to
present z1 systems to you first. So, here's what you're
     going to do.

When you bring up your editor or viewer's search capability
you will type in host,116, and then invoke the search. At
the end of the process you'll be looking at the entry for
the net coordinator for net 116.

Once you've found this you can then just move down the list
until you find 901, which is my node. A bit cumbersome, but
it can be done. Recent postings in fn_sysop have advertised
web accessible nodelist search tools as well. Ask around if
     that's your preferred method.

If that's a bit tedious for you, and you've got a day or so
to wait, you can always send a routed netmail to
"nodefinder" minus the quote marks of course, at my FIdonet
address. Place the address of the system you want info about
on the subject line, and a bit of junk text in the body so
that message processors downstream won't choke on an empty
mail and kill it. THen await the results. IF it's in my
nodelist it will come back to you, in a human readable form.
Again, ask your sysop. He/she may have tools available
through the bbs which can accomodate you easily. But, if you
must do it yourself you can retrieve the info from your raw
nodelist, it's just a bit cumbersome. We're not quite done
with our discussion of moderator tools. THere's an
additional tool which you'll want to possibly utilize before
doing that nodelist lookup. After all, contacting the system
hosting the offender might not get you positive results.
When that happens, it's time for you to institute the
     dreaded feed cut.

Next time we'll discuss how to look at the hops that twit's
message took from its originating system to yours. AFter
all, if the twit himself happens to be the sysop of the
originating system then asking him/her to cut the twit's
access isn't going to get you anywhere. SO, you've gotta
move up the chain. This is where a co-mod who is a system or
point operator can be a good bit of help to you. Failing
that, enlist the help of your host sysop. Depending on the
software in use, maybe he/she can toggle some settings to
let you see normally hidden control information in the
messages you read, or retrieve the info for you. It never
hurts to ask. If you're downloading mail packets using BLue
Wave and the Blue WAve mail door this control information
can be provided you with the messages you download. I'm sure
Silver Xpress users using companion mail doors can do the
same. However, if you're using .qwk packets you're going to
need the cooperation of your host sysop or a co-mod who's a
sysop or point. You need to trace the route that offender's
messages take to yours and find the node feeding his/her
host system. We'll delve into that topic in the next, and
     final installment in this series.

As we all know, building and maintaining anything will
occasionally require the use of tools that can be classified
as implements of destruction. That sledgehammer or pry bar
can help us get that section of wall removed, but if not
wielded with care we can do quite a bit more damage than
intended, possibly even compromising the structural support
of the building. The feed cut is similar to these tools, and
this is why it should only be used when other attempts to
solve a problem have been tried and were found lacking.

    HTML Problems!
1)How can I stop Search Engines from indexing my site?
    ======================================================

Meta tags are used to give detailed instructions in regard to a web
page to the Search Engines and browsers.

Many times, you may have a web page that you don't want the Search
Engines to index, such as your site's download pages or.. maybe the
robots are slowing your system to a crawl :(

To help with this problem, add one of the following META tag codes
between the HEAD and /HEAD tags of your HTML.

The following META tag tells the Search Engine robots not to index
this page and not to follow any links within the page:

    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW"

The following META tag tells the Search Engine robots not to index
this page, but follow any links within the page:

    META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX,FOLLOW"

2)How can I protect my email address from Spammers on my page?
    =============================================================

Although it's very difficult to protect yourself from receiving spam
email, there is a way you can still display your email
address on your web site and protect it at the same time.

Instead of displaying the usual mailto:you@yourdomain.com email link
within your web page, use the following code within your HTML:

    A HREF="mailto:you & # 64 ; yourdomain.com">Contact Us /A
without the spaces that you see above between the ampersand, the pound sign, 64 and
    semicolon.

When someone clicks on this link, it will display your email address
    correctly.

Change the email address in the example above to your email address
that you would like to display. Using this code, you can protect your
    email address from spam bots.

    Nellie's Baba Ghanoush
    (Eggplant Appetizer on Pita Bread)
    ======================
    Preheat over to 400F

    1 medium eggplant
    2 tablespoons lemon juice
    2 tablespoons sesame paste
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1 teaspoon minced garlic
    1 teaspoon salt
    2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Cut 1 large eggplant in half lengthwise. Prick with a fork and place
cut sides down on a foil lined cookie sheet. Bake 25 minutes or until
tender when pierced with a knife. Remove the eggplant peel with a
    small knife.

Chop the eggplant and combine it with lemon juice, sesame paste, olive
oil, the minced garlic and the salt. Puree the eggplant mixture until
smooth. Add the parsley and serve with toasted pita bread.

    INFO:
    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material but I think until someone starts a
discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals (bg), feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis
    Kracht at 1:261/38
    Modem: 607-655-5652
    1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555
    via binkp or telnet mailer
(don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).
Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to
dr.debug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your
bbs listing to bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette
     echo! :)
