Faker Phone Calls and Other Trivia.
    by Bob Seaborn, 1:140/1

I've either had numerous of these fake phone calls, or had others
report to me that they've received them. My advice to my clients,
and that I follow myself is to either simply hang up, or play with
    them.

    Here's a typical scenario:

The phone rings, and a voice with a (usually) south-Asian accent
(sometimes male, sometimes female) tells me that their server is
being blasted by my computer. Occasionally, I'm told that they are
the "Internet Security Center", or Microsoft, or the government, or
some combination. The following actually happened to me last week.

I receive such a call, so I tell them that there are a dozen or more
computers here, and ask them to identify which one they are
complaining about by supplying me either it's MAC address, or it's IP
address, as we have multiple class-C's in use here. This request
seems to confuse them, and the usual response is that it's a Windows
computer. I then inform them that since we have multiple computers
here, some running Linux, some running DOS, some running OS/2, even
some running Android, as well as Windows, and I'm sorry, unless they
can positively identify which computer it is, there's nothing I can
do for them. BTW, the caller-id usually either tells me no data was
received, it's a google voice call out number, or it's a local (area
code 306) cellphone number, my phone is configured to not allow
anonymous calls to ring. In this case, it was 'no data received'.

I decided to play with her. She tells me that her security company
has contracted with Apple, Microsoft, and the Canadian government to
'fix' these problems, and after telling me how my Windows computer is
crashing their website, then asks me to 'turn my computer on' (how a
turned-off computer access the Internet, I don't know). Now she
wants me to do something with 'icloud', I refuse telling her that I
will have nothing to do with any Apple product or service. After
failing to convince me to change my mind, she now wants me to open my
browser and go to some oddball 'remote-desktop' website, I tell her
that when I try, I get a warning from my browser that the requested
site is blocked due to malware. Then she wants me to go to
www.teamviewer.com, and download the TeamViewer program, at which
point I tell her that I already have TeamViewer installed on my
computer, and offer to run it for her. Mind you, I was NOT going to
give her my actual TeamViewer id. I actually fired up TeamViewer,
yet all she wanted me to do is click on some green button. If anyone
has ever ran TeamViewer knows, it's all blue and white, with no green
anywhere. I tried to tell her this, which resulted in her hanging up
on me. I'd like to think that the 30-45 minutes I wasted her time
was well spent as she couldn't be scamming someone else. For me it
was either the above, or watching Judge Judy reruns.

A few weeks ago, I received a call from some guy, trying to tell me a
similar story, I responded with, "Can you hang on a minute, please?",
and proceeded to press a couple of buttons on my touch-tone phone,
wait a few seconds, and using a deeper voice, pretended to answer the
phone with "IT Department". He got really flustered, and asked me if
this wasn't a private home. I said that the number was one of many
in our rotary dial phone systems.

I figure that any time I can waste their time, it possibly helps
others, and since most of those calling seem to work out of a call
center and aren't really computer techs, they're probably reading
instructions from a screen or book, and, (obviously) I know a heck of
a lot more than they do about computers, operating systems, and
networking should be able to easily confuse them and throw them off
    track.

    Sausage and Potato Casserole
    by Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

    Preheat oven to 350F

    Ingredients:
    4 large potatoes
1 1/2 lbs. sausage (Italian Sweet or Hot)
    1 large onion
    3 cloves garlic, minced
[optional] 1 red pepper, cleaned and sliced
    Olive oil

spices: oregano, basil, salt, pepper, touch of thyme, garlic salt,
touch of red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to taste

Sprinkle a small amount of olive oil in the bottom of a 13X9" baking
    pan to coat lightly.

Peel the potatoes and cut in half lengthwise, then cut each half in
wedges. If took thick, cut again. The casserole is going to bake
for an hour so don't make the wedges too thin. Place the potatoes in
the pan. Add the sausages, cutting the connecting links to separate
the links if necessary. Cut the onion in quarters and distribute
amongst the potatoes and sausage. Add the minced garlic. Add red
pepper slices if you are using red peppers. Generously season the
whole with the spices (in my house, you can't use too much garlic
salt :)). Drizzle some olive oil lightly over all.
Turn the ingredients with your hands to coat and distribute the
spices, and arrange coated ingredients so that the ingredients
    alternate.

Bake at 350F for about an hour or until the sausage and potatoes are
    browned and done.

    INFO:

Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help
of Richard Webb (Old School ToolBox). If you have an idea for a
column or a series of articles, please contact me :)

    New!
    Mailing-List subscriptions via
    www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe
but of course you can always link into your uplink and use
Tick or a tick compatible program.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
    :)

    Write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net

Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38
     Modem: 607-200-4076
     Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555
     telnet mailer: filegate.net

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or
    netmail Janis as above.

Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
          drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
    listing to:
      bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
