This month we have two stories of telephone attempts to ensnare people
in thievery from our members.
#1, From Daryl Stout:

I have 2 step verification both for my GMail and Facebook accounts.
Too bad the others haven't followed suit, to prevent identity theft.
Speaking of which, I got a call yesterday morning on my cellphone,
from a guy who spoke broken English, first asking if I was the owner of
the phone. He then said he was from Publishers Clearing House, and told
me I had won a large amount of money.
In short, I told him I wasn't interested, and hung up.
The thing had fraud/red light alerts all over it, because:
1) Publishers Clearing House comes to the door of ones residence with
balloons, etc., and does NOT call on the phone.
2) I had NOT entered the contest, so how could I have won?? And, why
would someone put my name on a deal where they instead could benefit
monetarily??
3) His heavy foreign accident made me suspicious.
4) If something sounds too good to be true, it likely is.
The number is now in my blocked list. I debated about calling the
State Attorney General's Office or the FBI...but I posted a big
statement about it on Facebook.
For that matter, I'll update one of the bulletins on the BBS related
to this. And, you might want to put something in the FIDOGazette about
this.
Lastly, everyone I've talked to has told me that "I did the right
thing" in telling him "I wasn't interested", and hanging up on him.

Yesterday, October 3, 2014 at 12:00 PM Noon EDT my telephone rung and
a man with an foreign accent said he was calling from AT&T DSL Customer
Service and wanted to know how satisfied I was with using their DSL.
To me it sounded like the Microsoft Tech Support thing rebranded as
AT&T so I told him I didn't believe him and if I wanted to know
something from AT&T I call them, they don't call me.
He began telling me that AT&T just started contacting their customers
to ask how they like using their DSL Service.
I told him I didn't believe him and I was hanging the telephone up,
and I did so at 12:01 PM.
I never answered his question of how I liked using DSL or didn't like
it, and I didn't say Yes or No to anything he said.
I called the Toll Free number for AT&T DSL Tech Support and the man
that answered said I did the right thing, they do not call their users.
He also told me to enter the details of the call I received at
abuse@att.net, and I did that after I finished talking to the man at
AT&T DSL Tech Support.
I also made complaints to the FTC Do Not Call web page and the Indiana
Attorney Generals Do Not Call web pages.
I don't have the knack to keep those callers on the line for a long
time, I'd rather just hang the phone up on them, and get on with what
I was wanting to do.

C O O K I N G: Even SysOps have to Eat

No-Fuss Dill Pickles

1 1/2 lbs. cucumbers
4 garlic cloves, peeled, crushed and mince
2 teaspoons dill seed
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 cup cider vinegar
1 cup water
1 1/2 tablespoons pickling salt or kosher salt
These pickles are NOT for long term storage on a shelf, but will keep
well for a few weeks in your refrigerator.
Wash pickle jars and lids in hot soapy water, rinse well. Pack the
jars tightly with sliced pickles. Bring the other ingredients to a
rolling boil. Pour the hot brine over the pickles, filling each jar
to within 1/2-inch of the top. You may not use all the brine.
Remove air pockets between the pickles by stiring gently with clean
butter-knife. Seal the jars and let them cool. Store in the
refrigerator. Try to wait about hours 48 hours before eating for
fuller flavor, but you can eat them any time after you make them once
cold.

Where to Send Your Articles
Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)
Write an article!
If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
