    When 'OtherNet' Files Are Useful
    By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

Now and again, you may find yourself trying to communicate with a
node who is not in the nodelist yet. Say you're trying to help
a friend with his fido setup.

He doesn't have a node number yet from his NC, or if he does, it
may not be in the Fidonet nodelist yet. Communications via
netmail between yourself and this new sysop would be impossible.

If you want to communicate with this node via direct mail to
give him help and tips, etc. with his setup, you need to let
your BBS know how to contact him.

You can do that with an "othernet" list for example.

Doing it this way is the best way since you surely don't want to
modify your current nodelist... Adding your friend to the
current nodelist yourself will mean that subsequent nodediffs
will not work with your nodelist/nodediff when Thursday night
    comes around.

You set up a file that your BBS will read when it compiles your
nodelist data table which then will not effect subesquent
    nodediff files.

To set this file up, you need to include parts of the current
nodelist to show what net this new node will be in for your BBS
data files. You would include the Zone Coordinator line, the region
this node is in, the "Host," line for the node (his net), and his
    or her nodenumber.

Here's an example that creates data for a friend who you are
helping, node number 900 in net 261. Lines which are too long
for FidoGazette are wrapped here. Naturally, you shouldn't include
the [WRAPS] in your othernet list:

    ==========your otherlist file==========
    Zone,1,North_America,Slaterville_Springs_NY,Janis_Kracht,1-607-[WRAPS]
      200-4076,9600,CM,XX,H16,V32b,V42b,V34,V32T,X2C,INA:filegate.[WRAPS]
      net,IBN,IBN:24555,IFT,ITN
    Region,13,RC_-_Mid_Atlantic,DC_DE_MD_NJ_NY_PA_VA_WV,Michael_Luko[WRAPS]
      ,1-856-933-7096,33600,CM,V34,V32b,INA:cfbbs.dtdns.net,IBN,ITN,IFT
    Host,261,Maryland_Central_Net,NC,Mark_Hofmann,000-0-0-0-0,300,CM[WRAPS]
      ,XX,INA:bbs.weather-station.org,IBN:24555
    ,900,NewBBS,Slaterville_Springs_NY,Joe_newbie,000-0-0-0-0,300[WRAPS]
      ,CM,XX,INA:SysOp_Domain,IBN
    ==========end otherlist file=======

Edit this file with an ascii editor (not a word processor,
unless you can save it as a text file), copy and paste needed
parts of the nodelist as above, then save it with a name like
    otherlist.{weeknumber}

Put this file in your nodelist directory. With the BBBS mailer,
you also have to tell BBBS to include this file when it copiles
the data tables for your nodelist.

For example, in the external.bbb file you could list the
    following to include this file:

    ========external.bbb nodelist section=======

    [nodelist]

    /home/bbbs/nodelist/nodelist.* /home/bbbs/nodelist/nodediff.*
    /home/bbbs/nodelist/PASNLIST.* /home/bbbs/nodelist/PASNLIST.*
    /home/bbbs/nodelist/point.* /home/bbbs/nodelist/point.*
    /home/bbbs/nodelist/Stnlist.* /home/bbbs/nodelist/Stnlist.*
    /home/bbbs/nodelist/othernet.* /home/bbbs/nodelist/othernet.*
    =============

Then just issue the command that compiles the nodelist data for
your nodelist. With BBBS, the command is:

    ./bbbs bnc 0

Now you can send netmail directly to Joe Newbie since he's in
    your bbs's data tables.

    Issue #: 21

Gen 16:1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an
handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Sarai was unable to have children at this point and we'll see in just a
moment how Abram gets a child.

Gen 16:2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me
from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain
children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

Sarai has asked Abram to have an affair with her handmaid so that they will
have a child. You can imagine the kind of problems this will cause for the
both of them, Sarai and Abram.

Gen 16:3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after
Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband
    Abram to be his wife.
Gen 16:4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw
that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Abram and Sarai had been together ten years and she is now his wife. Hagar
had a child with Abram and this was very disturbing to Sarai.

Gen 16:5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised
in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Gen 16:6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to
her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from
    her face.

At this point after they had a child, Sarai's handmaid knew exactly how
Sarai felt and Hagar had left them.

Gen 16:7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the
wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
Gen 16:8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither
wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
Gen 16:9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress,
and submit thyself under her hands.
Gen 16:10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed
exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

Abram is about to have a very numerous amount of children that will spread
    across the land.

Gen 16:11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with
child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the
    LORD hath heard thy affliction.

Ishmael was the name of their son, this was the beginning of their seed
which God had promised Abram from the beginning that Abram would replenish
    the earth with his offspring.

Gen 16:12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man,
and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all
    his brethren.
Gen 16:13 And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God
seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
Gen 16:14 Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between
    Kadesh and Bered.
Gen 16:15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name,
    which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
Gen 16:16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare
    Ishmael to Abram.

Wow, Abram was eighty six years old when Hagar delivered their first child.
The Lord had commanded her to return to Abram as their handmaid.

We'll stop here and continue in the next few days.

    Sour Cream and Paprika Potatoes
    Preheat oven to 350F

6 large potatoes, cut in half
    8 ounces sour cream
    1/2 stick butter
    salt and pepper to taste
butter for pan, and 4 pats of butter

Boil the potatoes and mash with 1/2 cup butter, salt and pepper.
If you don't like potato skin much, you can slip the skin off
the potatoes. I usually remove 1/4 of the skins.

Fold in sour cream. Pour this mixture into a buttered pie
plate, and form peaks on the top with a spatula. Top with pats
of butter and sprinkle paprika over all.

Bake at 350F for 30 minutes.

    INFO:

Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help
of Richard Webb (Old School ToolBox). If you have an idea for a
column or a series of articles, please contact me :)

    New!
    Mailing-List subscriptions via
    www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe
but of course you can always link into your uplink and use
Tick or a tick compatible program.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
    :)

    Write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net

Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38
     Modem: 607-200-4076
     Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555
     telnet mailer: filegate.net

If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or
    netmail Janis as above.

Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
          drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
    listing to:
      bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
