This week Nick Kill and I played around with our systems a bit..
He called my bbs via modem with his internal Conexant Modem -
he was successful, and then I connected to his bbs using my
U.S.Robotics Courier.
With those two successful connects under our belt, we then moved
on to mailer connections a few days later...
Here's a clip from my log showing a recent connection by Nick's
system:

The neat thing about this for Nick was that he's using a Magic
Jack phone line, not a standard POTS line, and the same type
winmodem I'd attempted to use earlier over here.
If one's internet connection is out, TCPIP connections across
fidonet will fail of course... with a POTS line, you'd still be
able to connect to a HUB say like mine which uses both TCPIP and
a POTS line on two different nodes.
Magic Jack works by converting the analog signal used for
transmission of voice data via the PSTN (regular landline
telephone network) to a digital signal that can be transmitted
over the Internet... so if you use MagicJack and your internet
goes down.. well you're back to "no-where".
To use 'standard' Magic Jack, you need a computer with a high
speed Internet connection and an ordinary home phone. You don't
need a landline or existing phone service of any kind.
Plug one end of the Magic Jack into an open USB port on your
computer, plug a standard phone line into the other end of the
Magic Jack, and make and receive calls just as with any other
phone service, using your regular home telephone.. sounds
wonderful doesn't it?
There are other considerations though .. among them, from what
I understand, your PC must be turned on to make and receive
calls. Some customers who use magicjack complain about
connection quality and complete device failure. My own sister
who calls me with Magic Jack experienced horrendous line
quality, dropped words in the conversation and sometimes
couldn't even connect here (she'd get the equivalent of "all
circuits are busy" when she'd try to call).
Others say that Magic Jack software is almost impossible to
remove from your computer.. and I've read that Magic Jack
software also will display advertisements on your computer.
Just what we need :)
With a new service, Magic Jack Plus, Magic Jack now offers the
ability to connect directly to your router, with no computer
required.. the price is a bit steeper than normal MJ - at $69.95
rather than $39.95. I'd be interested to see some reviews of
Magic Jack Plus though I can't imagine their technology will
improve line quality much..
If I switched to MJ, I'd lose the simple landline connection
when storms affect your electricity.. but maybe the $$ I save
on the phone bill could be put to one of those gas-driven
generators? That could be cool. Before I did that though, I
would want to make sure that the MJ technology has improved
quite a bit.

Connecting the wetware, Part II
Last time in this space we discussed the concept of choke points in
relation to our fully coupled network and the distributed nodelist.
I also made some bold statements about how in circumventing these
choke points we help safeguard freedom and liberty. I'll continue
that of course this time.
Recent discussions in the z1c echo have been all over policy and
covered a lot of other ground too. But, one thing should be
considered in all that discussion. Fidonet since its early years
offered people a communications opportunity that otherwise could be
denied them, and still does today.
Consider this quotation from a message written by Mark Lewis in the
z1c echo. He says:
"the whole web/interwebs thing was just a bare dream when many of
us got into fidonet... heck, the tianamen square thing in china got
out to the world /because/ of fidonet and its connectivity...
africa was able to communicate over many provinces(?) due to
fidonet and the use of radio as their means of "dial up"
connection... later they changed to the much slower TCPIP protocols
over those same radio links but at the cost of the speed of
transfer of the data... but that's another story... fidonet brought
a lot to the world that many folk simply don't know about and
likely never will because they don't care to learn the history...
this goes for some who have even been part of fidonet during those
times... their attention was elsewhere do they simply never saw,
heard or learned these things."
This is one of the reasons I wrote the articles for the snooze a
few years back about why we should maintain that versatility, and
pots connectivity, even though our ftsc chairman thinks it's an
antique. This is the underlying principle Tom Jennings used to
argue for the fully coupled network.
Consider what the result would have been were the Chinese
government able to shut down the Fidonet links that got the message
outside the country. We already know that china has learned from
Tianmen square, they are at the forefront of the development of
tools and techniques to censor the internet. Developers in the
free world have been quick to answer their demand for these
capabilities, all to make a buck or two. Give the customer what
he/she wants and make some money after all. The fully coupled
network utilizing a variety of connection methods circumvents the
censors, enhancing one's ability to communicate.
The internet is quite cool, but still, other folks have their
fingers on the big off switch. Does anybody really think that the
despots aren't learning from Tianmen square or the "arab spring" or
Myanmar? Don't folks realize that sooner or later they'll sharpen
up and pull the big red switch *before* they perform another such
act of despotism or genocide? Does anybody really think that any
government anywhere won't become despotic if it perceives that
doing so will enhance its ability to function, or that great term
"security" we keep hearing about? Make the tools easy enough to
use you can be sure that governments will use them. Our internet
connectivity gives them easy tools to suppress our liberties, and
the corporations that provide the routing services will be quick to
comply with such instructions, especially if cops or soldiers with
guns arrive at the server farms' locations ordering them to do so.
How many of you good readers out there refuse to fly because you
don't want the TSA looking inside your clothes on your body with
their scanners? This is in the name of making us "safer" when we
fly. If the cops or soldiers with guns tell that internet router
to shut down those servers and routers to make the people safer
they won't even have to draw the guns, just show up with the paper.
The guns will stay in the holsters, but the connections will be
cut. You can take that to the bank.
Our fully coupled network with its distributed nodelist and variety
of interconnection methods available fits right in with the
philosophy of Fidonet's founders. They showed a lot of wisdom and
foresight which, coming up on three decades later is still
relevant. As we have advanced technologically we've developed ways
to communicate even when the choke points are taken down. I'll
leave you this time with this thought.
If you like me are a student of U.S. history you recall Paine and
the other writers of the Federalist papers, all published under the
pseudonym Publius, though penned by different individuals.
Newspapers of the day that were sympathetic, or were glad to accept
money to do so published these. Now consider what would have
happened if people with guns had entered the newspaper office and
forced the type setter to chuck the writings of Publius into the
fire when setting type for the next edition. There would be no
discussion today of the principles put forward in the Federalist
papers. Remember that even the Federalists writing as Publius were
careful to use more than one newspaper to get their writings out.

Nine hundred and two years is a very long time to live for anyone.
I wish I lived that long! Seriously, if we could maintain our
health that long and still be productive members of society, that
would be quite fascinating. Wouldn't it be interesting to
interact with members of our family from that long ago? There
would be so much we could learn from each other.

Are you still with me up to this point? There are a lot of names
and the families are so big. Now we have Methuselah. Can you
trace back all the way from the beginning with Adam? Here, I will
help you.

Since Cain killed Able, the blood from Able lead to God cursing

My Birthday was on February 1st.. yeah, I may not look like it
but I'm darn getting there age-wise Lol.... I must have darn
good genes, is all I can figure. Grandma Mary never got a gray
hair until she was over 68... wow..That's good Sicilian genes
:)
Ok some of my parts feel like they've had enough (stop that!
(grin)) You _are_ after all only as old as you FEEL.. You can
cheat and use the HEX numbering system when someone has the
nerve to ask you to confirm the age you are on your driver's
license - for example, when I was 39 in Decimal I as only 29 in
HEX. Trouble is, when you do that, that hex numbering system
doesn't sound as good when you start "getting on" in years
Anyway, often enough around here, it's dinner time, and everyone
wants to know what what you're going to conjure up ..it's my own
fault, I like cooking. Once, I swear, some fellow who'd come to
dinner at our house said to Ron, "Wow. You eat like this all
the time??" Ron smiled and said "Yeah.....I do". And all I
could do was quietly giggle that night.. I mean all I could
picture was perhaps this other fellow's life with hamburger
helper, and frozen dinner entrees.
It's true though.. I can't "just" make hamburgers and french
fries, even when I start out feeling like I'm a little to 'tired
to fuss'.. I have to do this thing with the fries making them
garlic-fries, or make a bowl of roasted chicken gravy to serve
on the table with them.. or vinegar and salt dressing,.. and
the hamburgers can't just be burgers, the hamburger has to have
hamburger mixed with a bit of bread crumbs, slivers of celery,
garlic, onions, red pepper flakes and garlic salt and pepper all
over them.. If I'm really in a mood, there will also be Swiss
cheese topping them, crispy bacon and a kind of twist on
thousand island dressing at the table. Or..deciding to make a
baked potato, but I can't just stick it in the oven or the
microwave, I have to slice the potatoes in half, scrape the
insides out and mash them with milk and butter, salt and pepper,
and maybe even Swiss or Parmesan cheese..
It's just a THING... If you're going to do something, you (I do
at least) feel like I am going to do it well.
So on my birthday, when Ron said to me, "I have to take you out
to dinner.." I couldn't resist the idea. You know.. who knows
what ideas I might pick up, or what entree that we go crazy
over, that I might I decide to try on my own just given the
taste of the dish. More times than not though, we're disappointed
when we go out to eat... certainly with Italian dishes..
We went to Ithaca's premier steak house..John Thomas Steak house
restaurant since I'm desperately trying to avoid this gluten
thing... so what could go wrong with steak on the menu..
Trouble was one of the antipasto selections was Fried
Squid...... something I could die for :)...
So.. yes I ordered it. and ate it..loving each single delicately
fried piece of squid covered in gluten-y breadcrumbs.. If I was
home, I would have used non-gluten bread crumbs (I now have tons
of them).. but this appetizer was perfect, NOT over done, tough
nor stringy. They essentially melted in your mouth. So here's
my own recipe for that..sans non-gluten breadcrumbs.....YMMV as
they say... and yes, I paid for that gluten-appetizer later :(
But the Fillet Mignon I ordered made up for that!
Fried Calamari
Preheat oven to 350F
1 pound Calamari, cleaned
1 cup Italian flavored Bread Crumbs
1/4 cup olive oil
1 table spoon olive oil
Coat a 13x9 cookie sheet with 1 tablespoon olive oil.
Slice calamari tubes into 1/2 inch rings.
Place the 1/4 cup of oil in a bowl.
Place the bread crumbs in an additional bowl.
Dip the calamari rings in the oil, a few at a time, and then dip
in the bread crumbs. As you remove the rings, shake off the
excess bread crumbs and place on cookie sheet in single layer.
Bake at 350F for 10 minutes

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)

If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
