Thanks for your insightful articles, Richard! I have to agree with all the points of his current article though perhaps another way we bend the "choke points" (as Richard describes them in his article) is connecting dialup nodes and internet nodes using routed netmail. Properly routed, this important facet of Fidonet communication allows your netmail to make it to otherwise unconnectable systems. This week we had some intense discussions in the Z1C echo regarding some of the 'somewhat' outdated lines contained in Policy 4... I say somewhat because no matter what happens to our network, and no matter what happens to Policy 4, routed mail will always be there. I've had a few days to think about a statement I made in the Z1C echo - that I felt we really needed an IC. One of the reasons I said I thought we do need one is so that those discussions regarding changing P4 can move forward. Do we need to can change policy 4? No, I really don't think that's the case. I think the document that has served us so well since it was published and accepted on June 9, 1989, still works for us today. I don't see it as some may, as an antiquated document, out of touch with how our network operates. Our network is about communication, and we do that and improve our methods with every piece of new bbs software written, and with every new mailer that is written and/or updated. Of note to me: So far in my netmail mailbox, and in my email mailbox the number of nodes in Fidonet who have contacted me saying, "YES, Please DO contact the ZCC about electing an IC" have been a grand total of _0_.. zed.. none. Apathy? Perhaps.. but that to me says the majority of Zone 1 SysOps feel the same way as I do. Feel differently about this? Now is the time to get moving and let me know. But, the thing we forget is that Fidonet was designed primarily to be about linking the wetware. So what's wetware you ask. Wetware is that stuff between your ears that gives you hopes, desires, dreams, that enables you to perceive a beautiful painting, the love of those closest to you, or enables you to contemplate and comprehend quantum physics. Fidonet was designed to connect that wetware, through all sorts of adverse conditions. In fact, in maintaining a variety of connection schemes, we in Fidonet are taking a stand for freedom and liberty, because we're about connecting people to people. Are you shaking your head and wondering if I've been smoking or drinking something strange? Read on. I'm as sober as I can get, and I'm as serious as a heart attack! Consider our nodelist. It's production is decentralized. Consider Tom Jennings' arguments regarding why it was designed this way when folks started advocating for a decoupled network. Any node, in theory, can make contact with any other node in a fully coupled network. Yeah yeah I know, a pots only can't connect with a binkd only node unless it's via routed mail. I've touched that subject before, and will again, but let's essentially lay that consideration aside for the moment. Should that binkd only node really desire direct connections with that pots only node, he can connect up a modem, and even if somebody decides to cut that pots only from the nodelist the binkd node can just go back to his last nodelist which had the pots only listed, hook up his modem, and, we have communication. Remember when a region in Europe asked others to distribute its net segment independent of official channels? Oldtimers sure do. Some remember when region 12 gave a whole net in region 10 refuge from Bob Kohl. When the zc told them they were forbidden to do this, they made arrangements for alternate distribution of their segment, as they produced it, not as the zc produced it. Having no other choice, the zc backed down. Contrast that with your internet connections. If you can't access dns lookup information you can't communicate. If you can't translate amazon.com to those ip numbers then you're out of luck! Unlike our nodelist, the capability you have to connect is provided elsewhere, not local to you. Lose the ability to access that information, and you can't communicate. Both volunteers and professionals in the world of emergency communications often refer to choke points. That dns lookup facility is a choke point. Your central telephone switching center is a choke point, as is the cell tower closest to you. Take out the choke point, deny those who need it communication. Your emergency responders in your community have their choke points as well. Those booster systems called repeaters on tall towers which enable your law enforcers and other responders to communicate with their portable radios are of course choke points. They understand this, that's why they're battery backed up for power, and sometimes even have diesel or gas generators that kick in when mains power is lost. But, if the tower collapses or the antenna is damaged in the storm the choke point still chokes off communication, which is why we call them choke points. Tom Jennings and the developers of Fidonet understood this concept very well. Back around a decade ago the concern was the size of the nodelist. Because of the rapid growth of Fidonet and the size of the nodelist some argued for decoupling the network. Tom Jennings and others were quite vocal in opposing this, and stated their position quite eloquently. The incidents in Europe and in region 12 I cited above illustrate their wisdom. Today the size of our nodelist is no longer an issue. The challenge we face today is that of maintaining a variety of interconnection schemes which can enable us to maintain communication. Putting all our connectivity eggs in the internet basket presents us with a problem of choke points, a problem which was circumvented by the fully coupled network facilitated by the distribution of the complete nodelist. These considerations may be very important to you in the future, and I'll discuss why in the next issue. Broiled Barbecue Chicken and Polenta By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net Around our home, both Barbecued chicken and Polenta are comfort foods that everyone enjoys. I buy a whole free range chicken and cut it up into small serving pieces. Ingredients: 1 3 1/2 - 4lb. Chicken Disjoint the chicken, and cut into serving pieces at the joints, such as legs, thighs, wing drumette, and wing tips. Cut the breast in half along the breast bone, and then in half again. Barbecue sauce: 1 1/2 cups Bionatarae strained bottled tomatoes 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup molasses 5 tablespoons dijon mustard 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon basil 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 5 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 onion minced 1 tsp coarse salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil Combine all the sauce ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until thickened and flavorful, about 25-30 minutes. Separate the barbecue sauce into two containers, one for brushing the chicken and one for serving at the table. Rub the chicken pieces with about two tablespoons olive oil. Sprinkle the pieces generously with coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the chicken pieces on a broiler pan, skin side down. Dot with broken pieces of 1 tablespoon butter. Broil for 10 minutes. At the end of the 10 minutes, brush some barbecue sauce on each piece and then turn each piece over. Dot the pieces with the other tablespoon of butter. Broil for 10 minutes. At the end of the 10 minutes, brush more barbecue sauce on the pieces, and then turn them over. Broil for 10 more minutes, add more barbecue sauce and watch so the sauce doesn't blacken unless you like blackened barbecue chicken - You may have to increase the time and lower the broiling rack. Total broiling time 30-40 minutes. Serve with reserved additional barbecue sauce if desired. Polenta 1 cup cold water 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup yellow corn meal 2 cups boiling water 1/4 cup parmesan cheese 1/4 cup butter In a medium saucepan, mix the cornmeal with 1 cup cold water and salt. Place on the stove over low heat, and whisk in the 2 cups boiling water. Continue cooking over low heat. When the polenta starts to leave the sides of the pot when stirred, remove from heat. Add the butter and parmesan cheese and stir until mixed. You can add a touch of salt and pepper to taste if you like. Serve Barbecued Chicken with Polenta and a green vegetable, such as Italian green beans tossed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net. Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
