Brr.. it's darn freezing here today.. last night, though
initial reports said our overnight low would drop to 3F, we
actually held our own at 5F.. wow, a heatwave!
Thankfully though no snow of consequence hit our village..
but a touch over from us by about an hour, Ithaca NY is
expected today to get lake-effect snow.. We're hoping to
move Ithaca sometime or 'nother.. but hearing reports like
that do not make me want to hurry the move there, that's
for sure.
Enjoy the weather if you can.. and here's hoping you can
stay warm if you're in a chilly belt... It doesn't seem
fair somehow that our neighbors in Zone 3 are experiencing
their summer right now :(

TDS Telecom Wants My Money...

I've been discussing internet charges with folks in the
FN_SYOP echo - some find it hard to understand how a rural
area's internet fees can be as high as they are.. It doesn't
surprise me however.
In a village who's total population is 901 people according
to the census of 2000 it is very understandable to me: 369
households, and 250 families residing in our village. Oh
wait, my daughter and her family left Windsor for Ithaca NY
a few years ago, so make that 249 families and 5 less
people as well.. When you're taking about a small country
village like Windsor, every person counts :)
Our village is so pathetically small that we don't even
have a police force..really.. :) We welcome though when
the town's sheriff rides though the village.. at least
that keeps the hooligans that leak out of the local bar
kind of quiet. Believe me, they can get mighty rowdy, and
it doesn't seem to matter what day of the week it is.
Back to TDS though.. From what I understand, this company
was recently bought out by firm in England.. and I
remember thinking, well, there goes the local friendly
service.. though I secretly hoped this affiliation might
bring better services to TDS.. not to be though, sadly
enough.
In Windsor, if you want a DSL line that can run servers,
you have to have a commercial account... so, While we were
able to upgrade our DSL line to a 15M from a 5M line
(geez!!) and our billing was reduced from $400.00 a month
to $176.71 plus LD fees from AT&T, I guess somewhere
somehow TDS figured it needed to make a few more bucks from
it's customers (they are the only phone company in town
afterall).
Two months ago TDS instituted a new policy without any
notice in writing to it's customers.. Normally, when the
phone bill comes with it's handy preaddressed envelope (you
pay postage, of course), I call the company on the phone
and make our payment using our debit card.
The new policy though that TDS started two months ago now
charges anyone who uses their
"automated-pay-your-bill-by-telephone" service a fee of
$2.90. Doesn't matter if you are a residential or
commercial customer either. And you don't hear anything
about this fee until you call the customer service line to
pay your bill.
No, it's not a huge sum. But why any fee is necessary or
legal is beyond me. You don't get this charge if you go to
their web site and make a payment with your debit or credit
card, and of course you don't have to pay this extra $2.90
cents if you use a check and the postal service to make
your payment.. I won't use their web site for payments
since the last time I did that, TDS overcharged us by a
whole month's billing.. and at the time, that stinking
$400.00 charge was NOTHING to sneeze at.
So first I filed a complaint over this excessive charge
with the FCC.. and then I filed another complaint with the
Federal Trade Commission's consumer fraud protection
agency.. The FTC acknowleged my complaint and now I'm
waiting to hear the results of there investigation.
Wouldn't it be nice if the little guy won for once? :)

Italian Marinated Vegetables
Microwave recipe
Typically I use any vegetables I have on hand for this
recipe... the crunchier the vegetable, the better suited
it will be.
Put into a microwave-safe 2-quart jar or container with lid:
2 stalks celery cut into 2 inch lengths
2 medium onions, quartered
2 carrots, sliced in half or thirds if very thick
and cut to 2 inch lengths
Handful cauliflower florets
4-5 mushrooms, cut in half
1 green pepper, sliced
Add to the container
1 cup olive oil
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
3 Tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon basil
1 crushed clove garlic
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Microwave covered on high for about 3-5 minutes. The time will depend on
the power of your microwave. You want the vegetables to be somewhat firm.
Serve at room temperature in bowls with some of the dressing.

Where to Send Your Articles
Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)
Write an article!
If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
your article off at:

telnet mailer: filegate.net
If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
