The software the new sysop runs such as Synchronet would normally have hooks for one of these types of mailers. Examples of some of these mailers are the following: Argus Can run in ArcMail attach with 1 outbound for all Zones, OR with Binkley-Style outbound with several directories for each Zone. Radius Same really as Argus since Argus and Radius were developed from Argus source code. BinkD Binkley-Style outbounds, and also T-Mail style outbounds. T-mail style outbounds are simply directories (folders) where you can place a nodes' fidonet traffic. Where to Find Mailer Files: ========================== http://www.filegate.net/bbsmailers.htm#bbs_mailers Where to Find Tutorials: ======================= BinkD: http://www.filegate.net/zone1/binkd.html Argus: http://www.filegate.net/zone1/ar-index.html BBBS: http://www.filegate.net/zone1/howto-bbbs.html Helpful Terms You'll Run Into in Fidonet =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Mailer The mailer is a program that may run on top of a BBS program, or 'stand-alone' by itself with no BBS program. When it is run on top of a BBS program (called a "front-end"), it is able to determine whether a caller to the system is another BBS mailer, or a user who wants to log onto your BBS system. The mailer is also used to call out to other FidoNet systems, and to allow other bbs systems to call your system. You can use your mailer to call another system to pickup or receive FidoNet traffic (mail, etc.), or to request a particular file (File Request or 'freq.'). When you use a modem to dial up other fidonet members, you use mailers such as FrontDoor, or Binkley Terminal. Some BBS programs come with a modem capable mailer (BBBS, WildCat WinServer, for example. The modem may be an actual "Modem", or a virtual modem. If you have an internet connection that you will use to contact other Fidonet members, you can use one of the many available IP mailers, such as BINKD, or InternetRex, or Argus, or any mailer or BBS program that uses the BINKP protocol. Some people also connect to other nodes with a telnet mailer. Node A Fidonet node may be a BBS system with users, or an automated system which performs mail-only duties. Region Geographic sections of Zone 1 (North America) are divided into sections called Regions. Each Zone does this, with unique regional numbers to identify them. Regional Coordinator A Regional Coordinator is responsible for the smooth operation of the Region he or she coordinates. The Regional Coordinator, or RC, submits a segment from all regional networks to the ZC, so that the ZC can prepare a weekly nodelist with up-to-date information. See Policy 4 for a list of other duties of an RC. RIN A Regional Independant Node is not a member of any network, but is listed under the Regional Coordinator. This may be because there is no local net for the node. Uplink The system you receive your echomail and file feed from. Downlink A system who receives files or echomail from you. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g).
