By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net Like many others, and for quite a few years I've had a Fidonet application generator at http://filegate.net/zone1/. The applications from new and returning sysops are encouraging. The application is basic, but it assumes the applicant has at least some knowledge of the network the fellow/gal is looking to join. We take a lot for granted being the "old salts" of the network though. For instance, say you're sysop who's been around for a long time, running your BBS in a FTN compatible network, but not in Fidonet... First off, if you are not a member of Fidonet, what the heck is an 'FTN-Compatible' network? An FTN-compatible network is one which uses a nodelist as we do in Fidonet, and one which uses FTSC standards in creating message echo areas and netmail. Often, these networks forgo standard Fidonet technology regarding mailers though and use other methods of moving mail amongst their members. How generally has echomail (and netmail most likely) been moved about between systems? These days, I doubt it's by modem.. the need for that type protocol among people hasn't been seen probably since the 1990's. One method of moving mail is via QWK transfers over FTP. So a node who's been around say for the last 10 years in an FTN-compatible network may have no idea that when you join Fidonet, you're going to be asked to set up an Internet mailer of some type. This isn't because the FTN-compatible network is especially lacking in terms of members or technology.. it's more because of the way things happen to be done in some non-Fidonet networks. So.. applications often come in from people with of course essential information, but not all necessary for membership in Fidonet: SysOp Name Location BBS Name DNS Echomail tosser Mailer Often new sysops joining Fidonet don't know which echomail tosser they are using because their software may have incorporated this feature so well, that the sysop isn't really aware of it.. so the field is marked "N/A" ("not applicable, I have no idea")... And for SysOps using Synchronet BBS, the sysop may not realize that his/her tosser is SBBSECHO, included with the package.. same with BBBS.. there, the echomail tosser is BOGUS (seriously, that's the name). Since the 'other ftn' network may not use mailers to transfer mail but may use QWK technology with FTP, the mailer field is also often left blank. When I see this, I contact the node and find out what OS and BBS package they are running so that I can suggest a compatible echomail tosser, and a compatible mailer. For instance, if the node is running SBBS under Windows, there are options for the Internet mailer such as Argus, Radius or BinkD. Rob Swindell has thoughtfully included hooks for these programs in SBBS, so the SysOp just has to tell SBBSEcho the type of outbounds to use, and the path to the outbounds, etc. If the node is running SBBS under Linux, options for a mailer are limited to BinkD for Linux, but that's an extremely easy program to set up. Again SBBSEcho can be told to use Binkley style outbounds, so there is no problem there. Sometimes, a new node filling out the application to join Fidonet needs some basic information regarding mailers as well. Since they've been using QWK technology over FTP, they've had no reason to think about "Types of Mailer Outbounds" until now.. For instance, what is the difference between 'Binkley-Style Outbounds' and 'Arcmail Attach' outbounds and why should I care??' Many of the old-timers in Fidonet know first hand the difference between them since they've probably run various mailers over time.. but for the new sysop coming from a non-fidonet network, it's all news to them. So, for the newbie coming in to Fidonet, here are some details which may be helpful: ARCMail Attach: =============== FrontDoor mailer (often abbreviated as FD) is an example of an ARCMail attach mailer. With FD style mailers (like BBBS), packets are archived in an outbound directory, (*.sa1, *.sa2, *.su1, *.su2, *.mo1, *.mo2, etc.) and a netmail attach message is created in the netmail directory telling the mailer where the archived packet "lives" (often you'll see *.MSG messages in the netmail directory, with contents like: ARCMail Janis Kracht /home/bbbs/outbound/1aebb66a.mo1 -> attached archive containing packets 24 Sep 12 10:00:06 INTL 1:261/38 1:123/500 FLAGS DIR KFS ARCMail attach mailers use one outbound directory for all Zones. So mail for Zones 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 for instance are all located in perhaps c:\mailer\outbound. Routing and packing is called dynamic with this type mailer, because the mailer can scan the message list, create a mail packet on the fly and so on. Depending on routing commands, the netmail attach messages may go out immediately (crash) or be put on hold for pickup. Binkley-Style: ============= A Binkley-style mailer, often called B-0, or Binkley-Outbounds mailer is a bit different than an ARCMail Attach mailer. With this type mailer, first off, you'll have separate outbounds for each Zone.. say like outbound.001, outbound.002 for their respective zones. When messages are scanned and packed by the tosser, a list of the traffic is created and the flavor of the traffic is reflected in the filename used for this list of traffic. For instance, mail archives which are to be sent with the Crash flavor are listed in list named filename.clo, indicating the traffic will be sent with Crash flavor.. *.hlo would indicate the mail would be send when the node polled the system (mail is on Hold, in other words). An example of a *lo file list might look like this: filename.mo1 ----> archive of packets, typically in the outbound. filename.mo2 filename.mo3 [etc.] where filename is usually the hex equivalent of the receiver's node number. The mailer reads the list of files in the *lo file, and sends them with the flavor specified in the routing. === For the new node jumping into Fidonet from a qwk world, the above can be a bit daunting. Thankfully tutorials exist for several mailers however. Since a number of the mailers available are clones of others, people who need to learn about how to set up mailers like ARGUS and RADIUS can use tutorials written for ARGUS such as this one: http://www.filegate.net/zone1/ar-index.html and this one for BinkD: http://www.filegate.net/zone1/binkd.html If you need to see a list of current tutorials, have a look at FIDONEWS in the Tutorial section of the journal. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 16 Page 3 September 1, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= C O L U M N S ================================================================= The Old School Toolbox By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 Connecting the Wetware part XIII. We often speak, and have spoken with a forked tongue when discussing our ideas about what Fidonet is and how it works. If you'll recall, last time I left you with a reminder of the pet phrase used by many when discussing Fidonet echoes versus usenet newsgroups. "Fidonet echoes are better than usenet newsgroups because ... " Were you able to fill in the blank? I'll bet you were. "Fidonet echoes are better than usenet newsgroups because the signal to noise ratio is better, thanks to moderation ... " Okay, go back in this series, and other discussions of how usenet operates in comparison to how Fidonet operates. Usenet is that anarchy that Fidonet folks often say they want writ large. So long as the traffic you generate is technically within spec, what administration there is of usenet will say absolutely nothing to you, connect up wherever you can find a feed, then it's open season. That doesn't mean that there won't be peer pressure and unwritten codes of behavior within groups however. Try discussing so-called high-end stereo in the audio production newsgroups I frequent. Bring your version of snake oil marketing masquerading as science into this group of people who work producing the audio you hear on your radio, television and favorite music media. You'll soon be shouted down and told to take it to an appropriate newsgroup. But, there will be no great pronouncement from any usenet administrators, no hierarchy step in. Yes, there are moderated newsgroups, and I lurk in a couple of them. But, for the most part, usenet is the anarchy most Fido folks say they desire. Yet we hard coded rules into our policy document which should have obviously been left out. A good example is the section on Fidonews. Fidonews can be reached at address 1:1/1 according to policy. We gave no thought to changes in transport technology, or the editorship moving to elsewhere than North America, which it has twice, once to zone 5, the other to Sweden. Then, we hard coded a clerical and administrative structure which works well for such things, but refused to recognize that the whole reason that a network existed in the first place was connecting people to people. Even as Policy 4.07 was being drafted the potential of echomail should have been realized. Echomail would be the monster that totally changed the Fidonet world. Yet we hard coded into policy that what governing structure there was, that administrative and bookkeeping structure would not touch the administration of echomail. "fight-o-net" had some of its biggest wars over echomail, who could control it, who could distribute it to whom, etc. etc. So, we leave a poor Fidonews editor holding the bag for it all. Everybody gives his grievance and pet gripe to him/her/them. We give the poor editors no guidance, except the prime directive of its founder, Tom Jennings, which fit when the network was quite small, but as it grew no longer was a reasonable assumption. So we get pages and pages of quoted echomail, feel good puff piece chain emails and everything else under the sun, including jokes that some wouldn't tell in mixed company. As my grandpa would say "that ain't no way to run a railroad." I'm sure many of you have seen the file announcements in the fdn I coordinate that advise that this month's "Braille Monitor" is available. The Braille Monitor is the official organ of the National Federation Of The Blind. But, there are some parallels with Fidonews that might be relevant to consider here. Like Fidonews, often the Braille Monitor's editorship is transferred from person to person by the outgoing editor appointing, and training his/her replacement. Like Fidonews, the monitor is intended to educate and inform members of the organization. Yes, there's a recipes column in the monitor, a short buy/sell/swap place for those who want to acquire or move adaptive equipment, assistive technology, etc. A large part of the monitor's mission is reaching the newcomer to the movement, both the public and that newly blinded person who has just been introduced to our movement. This means that any given issue might have little content of interest to someone like me, an old hand around those parts. I might skim the article on education of blind children, or the human interest story reprinted with permission from a local newspaper and get to the hard news of interest to us oldtimers, but that stuff's there, to inform, and educate. Unlike Fidonews, the board of directors of NFB has ultimate control over that editor however. If it is felt that an editor is not fulfilling the mission of the official organ they can step in, and begin the hunt for an editor more to their liking. There's never been a case when this was required however, as the outgoing editor has always mentored and trained his successor. Fidonews on the other hand is a transfer of the duty, and the software, "here ya go, have fun." Yes often that incoming editor was a frequent contributor, but there was no feeling of a mission or purpose transferred with that editor's title. Every new editor brought his/her perceptions of what it meant to edit "the snooze" with him, with no guidance from anywhere else. On one hand we got the anarchy we said we wanted, that is, until a poor sysop that found he didn't fit within the geographic restrictions wanted to be listed elsewhere and couldn't get that much bandied about geographic exemption. Then the fight was on. So I've beat on this drum for quite a few columns now, and you're wondering if I have any solutions. Not really. The only way there will ever be a solution is for the zone coordinators to actually work in concert with each other in appointing a team of thoughtful folks to formulate a new policy proposal to put before the regional coordinators, who have the power to give it the thumbs up or down. Such a drafting team should represent coordinators "grunt sysops" all zones, the proverbial whole nine yards. We already proved that an open forum where just anybody could participate doesn't work. If you think that's going to happen I've got some ocean front property in Kansas City for sale. Wanna buy it? Can there be a positive outcome without such a policy change effort? Yes, if, and only if those gentlemens' agreements which make Fidonet work are strengthened and certain people cease with the senseless power plays for no reason. If some of these individuals would quit harping on who was wronged in the past and come to an understanding that those informal agreements are the only real glue that holds Fidonet together then it will continue to survive. If they don't, they'll be hastening the demise of Fidonet. The zone 1 versus zone 2 wars must cease for any positive outcome to result. Reserve the greens. Cover the beets with water and add about 3 tablespoons of lemon juice to the water to prevent the beets from bleeding. Cook for about 45 minutes or until just tender. Drain and remove the outer skin. When cool, slice. Steam the chicken breasts until cooked, and cut into 1 1/2" chunks. Some people like to grill the chicken breasts instead, grilling or sauteing in a hot pan with 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter for 8 minutes on each side. Rub the inside of the salad bowl with the garlic pieces then mince them and add the garlic to the bowl. Add the beets, cucumbers, grapes, onion and garbanzo beans, tossing to combine. Add the chicken pieces and toss again lightly. Sprinkle sparingly with salt and pepper. Mix the dressing and correct the seasoning. Pour the dressing on the salad and toss well. Slice the beet greens and remove the stems. Make a bed on a large platter with the lettuce and beet greens, and place the chicken salad on the bed of greens. Chill and serve. If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! Mailing-List subscriptions via www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net. Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
