The big topic this week in the Fidonews message echo is: Did Ward Dossche submit an application for a Zone 1 node number?? Well, he hasn't as of this writing, as far as I know. Ward has been in contact with R17C so eventually I expect Ward will get an application in to whomever he's been directed to send that application to.. But it's not there yet afaik. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 14 Page 3 August 1, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- From the CATS_MEOW Echo. A Good End to a Move! by Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net Most of you probably have heard that in mid-July we moved our household from Windsor, NY to Slaterville Springs, NY. During the weekend of the move, three of our cats escaped to the outdoors. I wasn't so worried about this since the cats have been going inside and outside pretty much since we got them :) I sure wanted to know where they were, but wasn't so afraid of them not returning for the 'final ride to the new house'. At some point during the move, I nabbed Lulu and so she was the first to arrive with the pups at the new house.. Lola and Leo took off, as did Lizzy.. I think I saw Lizzy living with someone else as a matter of factAnyway, after the initial move that weekend we went back to the house in Windsor just about every day, trying to entice Lola and Leo to get in the darn cat cage :) Or come out of hiding so we could grab them and stick them in the cage :) No luck.. that went on for about 1 week, maybe 1 1/2 weeks.. Somewhere in there I WAS able to grab Lola by first giving her tons of catnip, then tempting her with cat food.. Whoosh.. I grabbed her and got her in the cat carrier.. Leo refused to come out and just hid further under the house :( We went back to Windsor abut 5 more times.. the last time there was no sign of Leo at all.. I knew I was going to need some help catching him since he'd obviously returned to his original 'feral' nature. He was probably terrified by all the changes around him and I also remembered he was the most skittish of the litter when we got them. I contacted the Animal Care Council in our area and pleaded with them for assistance.. the companies who do trap 'wild' animals like raccoons, etc. around here won't deal with cats or dogs so I knew I couldn't count on those companies.. The ACC contacted my neighbor (who I'd spoken with about this) and showed him how to set the trap for Leo.. how great it was that my neighbor was going to do this for us!!! Another week went by.. no signs of Leo anywhere.. Well, finally today I got a phone call from my neighbor in Windsor.. Leo was in the cage!!! You can bet my neighbor will be getting a gift, as well as the ACC getting a large donation :) We'll get him home probably tonight.. I figure it's going to be a little bit of a shock to him when he gets here :) FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 14 Page 4 August 1, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= C O L U M N S ================================================================= The Old School Toolbox By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 Connecting the Wetware, Part XII. A large part of my volunteer work seems to be with systems of communication. In fact, a large part of my profession seems to bump up against communications techniques and technologies as well. But, in the "hobby" world it seems that all organized communications systems have one thing in common. We wish to preserve individual autonomy for a variety of reasons. the unifying factor is "do as thou will so long as thine actions don't negatively impact the system.' Nice concept, if you can achieve it. But then we bump up against that wall which is dissemination of information. To exercise the freedom desired that sysop/node/link must acquire knowledge which will help him operate in a way which doesn't degrade the performance of the rest of the network. He must also be educated about becoming part of the cooperative network in practice, and not just in theory. After all, in a true peer to peer network such as Fidonet or Usenet that system must be a resource for others as well. In the preceding series of articles I touched upon numerous issues which have plagued Fidonet from its beginning. The over-arching principle of do as you will so long as you don't negatively impact the network was considered to be a major part of Fidonet's prime directive. The other part of that prime directive was promote the viability of the network, which in the early days meant its growth. We got the growth part for awhile, but with that near exponential growth we forgot about mentoring and education. Some of the founders understood the problem back in the early days. They understood that coordinators needed to manage their nodelist segments and "coordinate" movement of mail. But, Fidonet needed, and needs more than just some good nodelist clerks. Fidonet needed a way to speak with one voice to government regulators; new sysops; equipment manufacturers and vendors, etc. This need lead to the formation of IFNA. AT first Tom Jennings even supported the concept, but changed his mind after awhile. Tom saw two major problems with the whole thing, and both were in his mind insurmountable. First and foremost, an organization such as an IFNA doesn't live by principles of positive anarchy, it lives by the principles of constitutions, bylaws, codes of conduct and behavior, etc. In Tom's mind that was poison to the network. Tom's second problem with it was one that the IFNA leaders finally saw for themselves, and remedied just in time for the great IFNA plebiscite. You didn't have to pay to be listed in your nodelist, but if you were going to have a voice in the erstwhile government of Fidonet you had to pay your ifna dues. I knew a few guys then who were involved in the bbs scene. Most of them had systems cobbled together out of junk box parts and whatever they could beg borrow or barter. Just paying for that extra phone line to host a bbs was often a strain on tight budgets. Paying that $20 bill one month for IFNA membership might mean losing the phone connection, or something else of importance. IFNA was too late in changing its membership policy, and those who cared to vote gave it a resounding no. Just as IFNA or something like it was going to be needed most it was told to go away and not come back, and nothing was put in place to replace it. But, IFNA wasn't the only tool we had for educating new sysops and users, as well as the public. There was this publication called Fidonews. Fidonews could have been that vehicle, but was allowed to degenerate into more noise than signal. Few of the sysops that joined in the time of Fidonet's rapid growth (early to mid 1990s) knew about Fidonet's involvement in the events surrounding Tianmen square. Few understood the why of a lot of Fidonet's arcane procedures. As the nodelist started to get smaller, Fidonews did an even poorer job of educating the sysops and users. Anyone who wants an endless stream of puff pieces and urban legends has to do nothing more than read his email. Anyone who wants recipes and feel good stories can pick up Reader's digest or Better homes and Gardens. Fidonews, as a publication lost its direction, and there was no way for leadership of Fidonet to steer it back on course. Any other membership organization in which I've been involved would have a way for the organization to either replace an editor not doing the job, or to forcefully remind him or her what the mission of the publication is supposed to be. Fidonews, instead of being that one common element no matter what the theme of your system was, no matter what echoes you did or didn't carry . Did anyone make an effort to steer Fidonet's publication back on course? Those who expressed concerns were shouted down often by the very editors who were neglecting the responsibility they agreed to take. "We print anything we get." Great, so you printed everything you got, including Steve Winter's bigotry, misguided articles on nuclear science, puff pieces and feel good stories. But, Fidonews had no real direction, because those who formulated the governing structure of fidonet gave little thought to a government. We said we wanted it that way, we liked our anarchy, but with some reservations. Let me leave you with this thought. Whenever you read pieces in the Fidonews comparing echomail to usenet newsgroups you always saw this phrase. "Our echoes are better than usenet newsgroups because ... ' Oldtimers, think about it, it's easy to fill in the blank space. Next time, I'll dig down to the bedrock of speaking out of both sides of your mouth about what it is you think you want. This is just what Fidonet did, and continues to do. Think about that one, and, as is often said, "I'll be Bach, Mozart." If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! Mailing-List subscriptions via www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net. Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
