Oh, we'll get there.. it's just prospects of sitting in a car with all that fuzz is not my idea of a good time :) Anyway.. this Saturday is the big move from Windsor to our new home in Slaterville Springs, NY. My system may be down for a while on Friday, or Saturday as I move the system to it's new location, and configure the zone pages, etc. for filegate.net. I'll be back certainly sometime Saturday afternoon at the latest. This Thursday night's nodelist won't be affected. Happy 4th of July to all our American friends.. Ron and I will still be packing, so enjoy the holiday for us! :) FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 12 Page 3 July 4, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= C O L U M N S ================================================================= The Old School Toolbox By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 Connecting the Wetware, Part X. I've stated before in this space that any organization which operates on the principle of anarchy must make education a high priority if it wishes to survive. My recent description of my adventures as a hub illustrate this. At first we put time and effort into educating new sysops and users. As time went by though this soon went by the boards, as it did within Fidonet elsewhere. After all, we were busy people with lives other than operating bbs systems. After the new had worn off the core group remained active, but the other sysops in the cooperative were just interested in keeping the cost of mail down, and found that there was less time to be Fidonet ambassadors to the community at large. Our little cooperative was quite active at first in educating users, and recruiting sysops to join Fidonet. WE held seminars at the public library about three times a year and met occasionally for lunch somewhere on a Saturday to talk things over. Many local nets did this. But, the age of the Zone wide Fidonet convention was gone about the same time Ifna went toes up. like many local nets r little cooperative worked together to promote the bbs scene, and Fidonet at first, but eventually the cost recovery wars took their toll on cooperation in any form. Not just did we have no cohesiveness on a local level, but Fidonet in the macro sense had none. The days of the regional and zone wide meetings had come and gone. Some local nets continued the practice of in person sysop gatherings for many years, but many did not. Without these in person gatherings and the cohesiveness required by one distribution scheme for echomail and files the feeling that we all need to work together also disappeared. After all, if you and a few other folks are getting your mail via the bird, and another group in the same city is lucky enough to have a sugar daddy pulling his mail via ftp and distributing it for the cost of his internet connection then you have no reason to work together. In fact, the guy providing the feed from the dish probably found his customers running away en masse. Competition trumped cooperation in many places. Who gets it cheaper? In our case, our "net" was the entire eastern third of the state. Hence, nobody there who was carrying the banner of Fidonet wide cohesiveness and education, except maybe Marge Robins with her Fidonet history project. Our local cooperative was also a good indicator of how the rank and file looked at Fidonet as a whole back then. Within our cooperative there wasn't one of us paid any attention to Fidonet politics outside our crp. Big issues weren't on our radar. As long as we got our echomail and our routed netmail got where it was going, or appeared to we didn't have time. Yes, I read fn_sysop, and I read Fidonews, as did at least one other sysop in our cooperative, but we really didn't have time to get involved. I was piecing together an existence from a variety of endeavors, which meant sometimes working 12 hour days, sometimes gone for almost a week at a time, even during the days when our local cooperative was actually cooperating and active. Of the two other active member sysops one was a stay at home mom who was active in PTA and other community organizations. The other was a young man with a growing family, and two part-time jobs. Zone-wide or international Fidonet politics weren't showing up on their radar either. To be rather blunt about it, some of the loudest voices shouting about Fidonet politics weren't making their points in a manner which was lucid enough for me to want to get involved either. At our local meetings nobody was talking about larger issues impacting Fidonet as a whole. We were concerned about reliable netmail routing, and controlling costs. Why bother with the big picture? We didn't have a vote anyway. Through all of this you'd think that in a medium based on textual communication somebody would have bothered to carry the baton of education, especially in Fidonews. The weekly official organ could have been a big part of the solution, but instead was part of the problem, even then. In Fidonews of the early and mid 1990s you had two voices attempting anything that resembled education, of course Dog Logger with his satirical pieces, and Bob Moravsic. OF the two, I preferred to read logger, at least he was literate and could string sentences together. When Chris Baker took overeditorship he'd tell you bluntly he'd publish articles regarding echomail, but he really didn't care about it. Although he again tried to give the sysops some historical perspective he didn't wish to address the main reason they connected with the net in the first place. Hence, no educational help there. Editors after Chris made a halfhearted effort on occasion, but Fidonews after Chris baker seemed to consist mainly of ascii comics, the same forwarded jokes and feel good stories I'd already seen in my email, and little to actually educate users and sysops. The editors can't be blamed for all of this however. There was no mechanism in place for anybody to give the editor any guidance or sense of direction. Forwarded email dreck at least provided something for folks to read who might not have received it because they only communicated through Fidonet. Next time, a discussion of a similar problem modern Usenet faces, and discussion of things we can do to improve the situation. If you are somewhere even close to Ithaca, NY, on that weekend, and think you might like to join us, you can just stop in for one day if you like, or get a room at one of the inns nearby if you'd like to stick around for the entire event :) We can put some people up here in our new house, but need to know in advance if you'll be taking us up on that. While the name of this event is a "Cooking Echo Picnic", it is so much more than that :) We do typically go outside and party at times, but we also just go with the flow at the moment, depending on what people would like to do. There are excursions to local restaurants (some of them quite famous nationally, like the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca), and other sites of interest to people. Another big favorite will most likely be a visit to the Ithaca Farmers Market, which has been called a "Festival" with over 130 vendors. Plants, vegetables, meals, farmers who sell grass-fed beef, pork and lamb, and more are typically available. Craftsmen also bring their artistic wares, like artwork, jewelry, etc. At the house, we'll have stocked cupboards and most likely wine, beer and other beverages.. you can bring anything you want to share with people, as well. This weekend is the big move to our new place. The street address is 2682 Slaterville Road, Slaterville Springs, NY. I don't have a phone number for the house yet, but check the FIDOGAZETTE echo in the next few days.
