FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 10 Page 2 May 15, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= E D I T O R I A L ================================================================= This week Richard continues his toolbox series giving people insight as to what it was like in the mid 90's trying to balance cost of living with "the hobby"... before cheap(er) methods of communications came along...like Planet Connect.. and now of course the Internet.. Routed netmail, became way back then, more important than ever since "we" might not have had a direct connection to a Star system.. The way Planet Connect satellite systems worked was for some the demon in disguise.. and for our net in Orange County NY, our savior at some 20 or 30 $ a month..compared to the the horrendous POTS line charges that went up to (and I'm not kidding) over 600 dollars a month.. I mean I remember Ron telling me that if we figured all the $$ we'd spent in phone bills for Fidonet, we could have MORE than one summer home Lol. It was cheaper for me to connect with a node in another state than from someone in my own frigging county :( but... The trouble with Planet Connect though was best I thought described by Jason Bennett in FIDONEWS Vol 11, No. 36: Last summer, the hubs in net 116 were told of the imminent arrival of a savior, the greatest thing to happen to Fidonet since Tom Jennings wrote Fido v1.0. That (jk.. I guess we weren't alone with the LD savings) worshipful entity was Planet Connect, a company that would deliver all the mail and files you could eat at a fraction of the current cost. If it sounds as though PC were made up to be a god, that's not far from the truth. Planet Connect, so it was claimed, would deliver all the mail and files the net could consume for a mere $30 a month, plus it would soon have (cover your face in reverence!) Usenet newsgroups! The cheers from the net could be heard for miles around. And Jason continues with a discussion of P4 that we all knew had to be dealt with.. you know, the idiot-user/sysop who had to be removed from the network or even just the ECHO, but now couldn't be (back then, just buy your own satellite dish, or today, just find another feed.. it's so easy. And here's a thought for today.. even now idiot users (and I've had a couple like Wayne 'what's his name' who decided to almost stalk me on my bbs).. sometimes action must be taken. I was lucky in that the sysop from whose board this gross trouble maker posted from, eventually was able to lock him out of Fidonet. That type problem didn't stop me when I had the chance to change things for net 272 in SE NY.. Before PC we could only get echos related to our own individual bbs package, our mailers, and some administrative caca.. and still our completely -honest- NEC had trouble keeping his books out of the red... that was because we had so many darn small independent phone companies in our area :( So for us in net 272, SE NY,, my buying that satellite dish and figuring, hey.. this is for my system as well so I don't have to charge anyone anything... worked out just fine. Sadly though the worst happened when Ron's company decided we HAD to move to KY.. I took the dish with us. Luckily though once we got to KY, Bell South had a nice plan for people willing to test ISDN.. and I was ready for that one because of the work I did with U.S.Robotics Corp. FIDOGAZETTE Vol 6 No 10 Page 3 May 15, 2012 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================================= C O L U M N S ================================================================= The Old School Toolbox By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 Connecting The Wetware, Part VIII. Satellite distribution did wonderful things when it came to lowering the cost of echomail and file distribution access, especially for smaller nets. Although it didn't do anything for routed person to person mail that wasn't the major problem it created. Satellite distribution essentially created two Fidonets. Are you shaking your head at this one? Just follow me for a bit and you'll understand where I'm coming from. Most of the sysops who connected their bulletin boards to Fidonet in the early 1990's wanted the message and file echoes. Person to person mail was nice, but not the drawing card. If you doubt this just consider how few boards offered netmail access to users. Some of us did, and promoted its use, but many, if not most didn't. Some bbs software in wide use didn't make it easy for them to do so. After all, the users wanted the files to download, and the conferences to participate in. Person to person private mail was deemed less important, no matter how much it was promoted. some systems that had echomail capability offered it as an add on, often requiring that the mail be processed twice, once to process the packets into regular fido *.msg message bases, then again into the native format of the bbs. This made offering netmail access to users impossible. Unless the bbs system you chose was designed with Fidonet style networking in mind from the ground up offering users netmail was a problem, if not impossible to implement. Many new sysops discovered Fidonet after they'd chosen their bbs package however, and it was sure nice to get that content for their users, but not nice enough that they wished to make a major software change. That new sysop took a glance at policy, after all he was supposed to read it, and state that he would abide by it. From that the take away was that his system should answer the phone with a mailer at ZMH, not a big problem. He learned who to get his echomail from, and what his costs for echomail and file distribution would be, and how to pay for it. When he delved further into policy he learned that echomail, the main reason he showed up, was not really discussed a whole lot. If he happened to be near someone who was active in Fidonet politics maybe he heard about it at local sysop meetings or in the local sysop echo, but he really didn't pay much attention. The only thing that interested him was keeping his costs for file and message echo distribution at an absolute minimum. Let me illustrate with some personal experiences. I joined Fidonet in 1993 as a mail only in central Iowa, net 290. Net 290 was blessed with Dan Buda who was quite heavily involved in echomail distribution, in fact becoming zec somewhere around that time. Net 290 also had occasional in person sysop gatherings, as well as the Central Iowa Computer Users' group which sponsored Dan's bbs. I became a mail only for a couple of reasons and switched from being a point to MO status. They were to bring in special interest nets for myself and one or two other sysops. Because I was mail only I became the de facto place for central Iowa sysops to send prospective points. After all, a point off my system didn't need to fight through the busy signals caused by the folks playing games or leeching files. If you wanted reliable automation for acquiring your daily mail fix and you lived in the local service area in the middle of the 515 area code you were steered to me. When Dan became ZEC the NEC took over distribution of echomail. The NEC was bringing in adultlinks for his own use, as well as pulling the Fidonet backbone from a dish. The NEC was also on the south end of the local service area for Des Moines. This meant that if you lived in the northern suburbs he was a toll call for you. Our NC was in the city of Des Moines itself, so he would handle echomail distribution for nodes in the northern tier suburbs, as well as handle your routed inbound and outbound netmail. So, I sent my routed outbound netmail to my nc, and picked up my routed inbound from him. I picked up my echomail from another system instead of dialing the NEC, even though the NEC was a local call. This was because the other local system and I both participated in a special interest net, as well as handled echoes not carried on the backbone which I picked up from the west coast. In turn, that system paid into the crp on my behalf. There were quite a few systems in central Iowa net at that time, so crp was fairly reasonable. The NEC charged each one a flat fee of $7 to get echomail and files. When you'd attend sysop gatherings the only discussion of anything resembling policy that would take place would be about the reliability of echomail, and its cost. Few worried about reliability of routed netmail, but our NC was diligent in handling both inbound and outbound routed mail. In short, a rather reliable system with reasonable cost. Just pay your fee, send and receive your mail, no muss, no fuss, no bother. This in turn meant no bother about global Fidonet policy, the big consideration for most was the reliability of echomail and file feeds. The rest to most of the local sysops was essentially irrelevant. Then my employment situation changed, and I found myself moving back to southeastern Iowa where I grew up. My first mission on a trip home was to find out what the local bbs scene had to offer, and who might be connected to Fidonet. This was a local calling area of about 35,000 so I figured there had to be at least one board connected to Fidonet. I acquired a bbs list from a friend and started dialing while visiting. Not one of the local boards was connected to Fidonet. There was one board connected to a small qwk network, but it had little to offer me. If I wanted Fidonet access I was going to have to either find a willing boss node, or bring it in myself. When looking at the situation I decided that switching from mail only to publicly accessible bulletin board, and encouraging other boards to join was going to be my best option. My travels along the learning curve were just about to begin in earnest with my move. No, the operation of a hub wasn't my big hurdle. Setting up Maximus to go along with Binkley and Squish wasn't a real problem either. That learning curve was all about how Fidonet policy related to the humans behind the software, reliability of routed mail, and controlling costs. I'd jumped from an environment where one flat fee took care of my echomail costs and my worries were few to something quite different. Next time, I'll continue to connect some dots for the relative newcomer, as well as for those who argue that policy didn't, and doesn't fit in their part of the Fidonet world. In case your somewhere even close to Ithaca, NY, on that weekend, and think you might like to join us, here's what the "picnic" is like.. at least from the last time we had it here. *It's all about food* *Whether Cooking it or Eating it* I'm not sure.. but I think the very first day is just about getting settled in hotels and such and arriving.. (Hey you :)) Naturally, after a long trip, we figure people are going to be hungry.. so we try to have something ready for everyone who arrives that first day. It's not necessarily how it will go this time, who knows.. perhaps one of the guest who arrive early will want to commandeer my kitchen, which is fine with me :) Before hand, we discuss the area restaurants and people in the echo mention which of them they'd like to visit.. I think the second day, we try to gather together as many participants as we can for a dinner at a restaurant we'd enjoy.. Luckily for us Ithaca has TONS of excellent restaurants, to suit any taste in food and pocketbook (a real concern, we know that :() But during the day .. well, people have to eat don't they :) So sometimes someone who's mentioned a recipe in the echo will bring it to life - While this is going on, those of use who are so inclined watch the method involved in producing that dish in the midst of it's creation. While the work on the stove is going on, there's always the real happy comfortable "family" Fidonet chatter going on at the kitchen table. You couldn't ask for more. It was great to have immediate feedback on the foods we prepared, from the EATS at the table :) Oh I should mention that during this picnic that was here before some people 'called dibs' on ovens or pots that they'd need to make their own dish. I know what that's like ... some things have to be just right after all. I don't have the dimensions of our new oven/stove at the new place yet, but I'll probably get them this week and post them in the cooking echo! I think everyone who was here before knows my extensive pots and pans and frying pan "collection"... in other words, if you need it, (type of cookware) it's probably here.. but this time there is only ONE kitchen; should be no trouble there Here's a partial list of what will be available. If you don't see something, ask :) I probably forgot I have it here somewhere A variety of Corningware and Pyrex glass pans of various sizes, 8X8 square, 7X12X4 rectangular, 8" round; Plastic microwave-safe rice cooker (you can cook macaroni in it as well). Pyrex mixing bowl: 4 quart 10 inch Yellow round, no spout 4Qt. Blue 2Qt. white, with pouring spouts. Oven/Microwave safe ceramic 5 quart bowl Pots and Pans Revereware with copper bottom: 2 10" Revereware large frying pans 2 9" Revereware frying pans with lids, and egg poacher. 2, 3 1/2 qt. 6qt, 8qt. Revereware with lids (somewhere ) Double boiler insert for 3 1/2 qt. pan. Dutch oven with lid Farberware with Stainless bottom: 10" Farberware frying pan 4qt. Farberware sauce pan 2 and 3 qt. sauce pans with lids. Dutch oven with lid Wagner Cast Iron: 6", 8", 10" skillets Chicken Frying pan 4 quart sauce pan with lid Dutch oven with lid 2 stainless Steel Mixing bowls, 1Quart (small) and 4Qt. (large). These were from the Sunbeam mixer I had years ago. Atlas macaroni machine with attachments for fettuccine, spaghetti, wide noodles. Kitchenaid Professional 6qt bowl-lift Stand Mixer with dough hook, flat beater, wire beater, with attachments for macaroni, sausage stuffer, orange juicer. Kitchenaid K45 stand mixer. I also have a ceramic oven insert that fit perfectly in one of my older ovens here but I'm not sure if that insert will fit in the oven at the new house. That will be a drag if it doesn't fit :( Daytime's I remember we'd explore the area.. check out farmer's markets and such. There is an excellent Farmers Market in Ithaca, just 9 or 10 minutes away from our new place. I expect this picnic to be even better than the last.. would be great if you could come as well! If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! Mailing-List subscriptions via www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparsity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 telnet mailer: filegate.net If you are using routed Fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net. Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
