Connecting The Wetware Part VII.
Again, if you just tuned in, we're talking about Fidonet's primary
reason for being when it was created, connecting people to people
via bulletin board systems. If you've just stumbled across this
publication, go back five issues, read my column in those issues,
then this one. To sum up, I left you last time discussing Fidonet
policy and the driving force behind the assumption made in its
development, being lowest cost, and how some of those assumptions
were wrong. Not just were they wrong for people in other zones,
but they didn't fit entirely even within North America.
The quest for cheaper mail has always been with us in Fidonet.
Even before echomail the organization of Fidonet was primarily
intended to lower costs. Remember back then it was all about
person to person mail, no echomail conferences, no file
distribution.
Bulletin board systems, like everything else were more prevalent in
the metropolitan areas. This meant that a sysop in Los Angeles
might find himself sending more than one message to another
metropolitan area on any given day. In the beginning, let's say
that sysop in los Angeles had two messages for St. Louis. He would
place two phone calls to St. Louis to drop off his mail at the
destination system if he had two messages, or three, etc.
Enter routing, and of course the concept of nets, and two
dimensional addressing, i.e. net/node. This enabled that system in
Los Angeles to bundle all of his mail for St. Louis and place one
toll call. Your routing host would then deliver mail to the
systems in his locale. For outbound mail everybody was on his/her
own, although some nets instituted an outbound system to handle
outgoing mail from the net, with everybody kicking in his share of
the costs for the toll calls. This then was the forerunner of the
cost recovery plan.
Within a short period of time all this would drastically change
again, not just with the addition of zones (not really relevant for
our discussion here) but with the development of echomail.
Echomail radically changed everybody's outlook on the net, and was
the big drawing card to get more systems linked into Fidonet.
Echomail of course couldn't be routed, and policy even before p4
stated this explicitly. But there was still that quest for cheaper
mail. In the southeastern U.S. Redcon was developed, a system
would use out dialing watts lines to deliver mail to a variety of
places. Then there was Jedcon, if i"m remembering correctly an in
watts service which did the same thing. In those salad days of
echomail there were dreams of a satellite service such as
Planetconnect became, but the costs were prohibitive.
Enter Pc Pursuit. Telenet, a company involved in providing long
distance digital communication over leased lines developed a
service which fit the noncommercial networks like a glove, or so it
seemed. Use their leased long lines after business hours and on
weekends to reach out dials in other cities, and dial up systems in
the out dial city. Pay your flat fee, get access at 1200 baud to
all sorts of places without the meter running. For those who
wanted to carry a wide variety of echomail conferences and who
happened to be in locations served by PC Pursuit mail routing
suddenly became a nonissue. Just join Pc Pursuit with its flat
monthly fee, and hello cheap echomail!
Redcon and Jedcon served those not in Pc Pursuit cities, if they
wanted to pay the fee to connect up. Cost recovery plans were
implemented to serve nets whether the feed was via pcp or from just
dialing out for mail, and those who argued that geography and its
assumptions didn't fit everybody were essentially ignored. In
fact, there were attempts afoot to hard code geography into
echomail distribution policy as well. Still, like most things, the
status quo wasn't to remain for very long.
Modem speeds were increasing, 2400 baud modems were affordable, and
PC Pursuit didn't upgrade its services to 2400 baud in many places.
Then Telenet changed the pricing structure for PC Pursuit services,
put a cap on time used forcing one to deal with a running meter
after the cap was exceeded, but not enabling sysops to meter their
own usage. Suddenly Pc Pursuit was no longer the great deal it had
been, and the hunt for cheaper echomail was on again. By that time
if one looks at FIdonews one finds no references to the Redcon and
Jedcon systems. Whether their operators just burned out and pulled
the plug, or they never had enough of a user base to be cost
effective can't be determined by looking at Fidonews. Apparently,
with the demise of PC Pursuit as a viable method of moving the mail
everyone was once again on his/her own.
By the early 1990's some folks such as Randy Bush were already
using the internet as a carrier of mail, as Randy was using it to
provide zonegate services to Europe thanks to a special agreement.
Of course, in those days there were restrictions on its use, and
the Internet wasn't ubiquitous in those years. Major echomail hubs
still moved the mail via regular phone lines with the meter
running, often with the systems picking up mail from the big hubs
picking up the tab and passing on the costs to those they fed.
At this point we see the dream of satellite distribution realized
in Planetconnect. That tvro dish could be repurposed to picking up
the echomail for your local network. At certain times of the day
if your satellite was aimed appropriately and your software up and
running your hard drive would start spinning as you received the
Fidonet backbone, file distribution areas, and a bunch of Usenet
traffic. If you had mail or files to go out you dialed Tennessee
or one of the nodes that fed them. Planetconnect did wonderful
things for echomail and file distribution, but the first holes
started appearing in the world of routed person to person mail.
Next time, we'll discuss how fragmented distribution systems and
related issues had a big impact on how people viewed Fidonet
policy, and subsequent attempts to change it.

***Now, because of the Grass Roots festival, you're urged to get
rooms at various hotels and B&B's as soon as possible for that
weekend.
We can put up a few people in our home.. we have an extra
bedroom, floor space in the living room (ouch for you.. but it
does have a GREAT thick carpet :)), and we have a clean, heated,
dry basement.
For parking at the house we have a shared driveway with the house
next door, but there should be room for a few visitors, certainly
no problem during the day. We can also pick people up at their
hotels, etc.
Parking will be no problem on the street according to Town Hall
for say 4 cars, plus if necessary 4 more cars can be parked in
the Town Hall Parking lot. All I will need to do in that case is
keep track of who is parked there on Thursday and Friday
(business days) in case a car needs to be moved (for emergency
purposes, etc. which is unlikely).
The town hall itself which is just a few doors down from our
house (address of the town hall is 2670 Slaterville Road, and our
house is 2682 Slaterville Road).

Where to Send Your Articles
Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
:)

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop

If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
