It is with great joy that I see Russell Tiedt _today_ posted in
    the ZCC Echo :)

It's not that I expected him not to. It's just that if you
believe people like Michiel van der Vlist and Ward Dossche, Zone
5 is a goner! Not So!

It goes without saying that the perception of Mr. Vlist and Mr.
    Dossche are once again.. wrong.

It was true when Bin Li was Z6C, though even now Michiel and
Ward like to play the 'no connection was possible' card from
days long past. Now they are trying to play that same card with
Russell and Manuel Adorni (Z4C). Rather than believe my logs
which show Manuel polling here just about every day, they'd much
    rather ignore his connections here:

                     Connecting the Wetware, Part V.

Last time in this space we talked about why the framers of Fidonet
policy didn't drill too deep into the social part of the network.
I posited then that this was both the good news and the bad news.
The relative newcomer to Fidonet might think then that I'm blaming
the principles of anarchy on which Fidonet based its operational
considerations for its decline. Far from it. Other networks,
usenet in particular holds to these principles.

Like Fidonet, Usenet survives today. Unlike Fidonet, Usenet would
seem to be much healthier however. There are far more newsgroups
than Fidonet echoes, and I would venture far more participants than
we find in our message bases. Not that Usenet hasn't had its
setbacks the last few years. IN fact, many who were active in
their favorite newsgroups have fallen away because their internet
service provider no longer provided access to usenet. The service
providers shut down their nntp services forcing users to look for
third parties offering access through their internet connections.

Still, usenet continued to thrive during Fidonet's period of
decline precisely because Usenet had the support of those system
administrators and decision makers who enjoyed Usenet access at
their colleges and universities. Usenet integrated itself from the
start into uunet, and other forerunners of today's internet.
usenet is one of those things you could expect when you connect.

When internet service providers decided to no longer operate nntp
servers the reason they did so was twofold. First there were
political concerns over intellectual property theft, and also the
administration headaches thanks to miscreants using open ports into
usenet to create havoc and spam newsgroups. Still third party
providers stepped into the void offering free or low cost nntp
access for those left out when their service shut down its nntp
servers. This doesn't mean that the principle of positive anarchy
is all good for Usenet, and bad for Fidonet. Usenet has its own
set of challenges thanks to these principles. We'll explore them
in a moment, but first, we must return to Fidonet.

Fidonet, unlike Usenet had no cultural support from those who
migrated from academia to jobs maintaining servers at telephone
companies, cable companies and others offering broadband service to
the public. Fidonet after all was made up of independent system
operators who were outside the halls of academia and government.
Fidonet's main problem was that it could not adapt quickly enough
    to rapidly changing conditions.

A perfect example of how Fidonet policy painted us into a corner is
the section regarding the official weekly newsletter. You'll note
if you read that section that it stipulates that the Fidonews
editor can be reached by utilizing the address 1:1/1 which seemed
to be a good thing at the time, after all, the majority of Fidonet
connected systems were in North America at that time. But, even
before Fidonet grew elsewhere the 1:1/1 address created problems.
Tom Jennings received permission to abandon 1:1/1 in favor of
1:1/23 because of technical difficulties and errant mail being
dumped on the Fidonews editor's system, which was Tom's at the
time. Tom advocated modifying policy to remove the wording which
stipulated Fidonews could be reached at 1:1/1 but it never gained
enough traction. The next editors retained the 1:1/23 address as
did others in zone 1. Frank Vest tried in earnest to get the
wording in policy changed, without success. Then, Fidonews moved
    across the ocean to Europe.

By that point most software was improved so that it didn't
automatically send mail whose routing was uncertain to the nominal
zonegate for the same zone, which was the problem. when Fidonews
was at 1:1/1 what would happen is this:

Software having no good instructions how to route mail would send
it to what appeared to be the nominal zonegate for zone 1, even if
the system where it originated was in zone 1. Mail which was
routed to Europe might go to the zonegate for Europe, i.e. 1:2/2,
etc. So, if no rules to follow to send it within the same zone,
the mail would be routed to 1:1/1.

The section of p4 regarding Fidonews was just one of the gotchas
involved in adapting policy to meet prevailing conditions as they
changed.Echomail was another, and the war of words regarding
echomail policy went on for years. Echomail policies still aren't
consistent throughout the network. The only thing policy would say
about it and still does is that echomail is just another flavor of
mail, and should not be handled during zmh, although the later was
more in the form of a guideline not a hard and fast rule. Echomail
was sort of like that substance your dog leaves in a corner of the
yard, necessary for continued life and good health, just don't step
in it. Yet echomail was the primary reason our nodelist grew so
rapidly. Bbs systems in the large cities and the small towns
connected up for the echomail. It along with the file distribution
networks were the primary motivator for sysops to link their
systems to the net. Unlike Usenet, Fidonet was designed around
the concept of person to person mail. Usenet was designed around
the concept of one to many communication, i.e. newsgroup articles
    on various topics.

Unlike fidonet Usenet seems to maintain a much wider variety of
discussion groups on a much broader range of topics. The support
of the system administrators is only part of the reason why,
because, as many of us know, nntp servers are quickly disappearing
from major service providers, with third parties stepping into the
gap. One can't blame principles of anarchy for anything other than
the major internet service providers closing their nntp servers
down, because Usenet maintains enough critical mass to be viable.
I'll explore this more next time.

    Fluffy Coconut Rasberry Donuts

I make these in my new Sunbeam Donut maker, but you can make
them in large muffin cups in the oven, preheated to about 400F

    Fluffy Coconut Rasberry Donuts
    Ingredients
    About 10-12 donuts
preheat donut maker, or preheat oven to 400F.

    1/2 cup sugar
    1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    8 tablespoons olive oil
    1 tablespoon butter, melted
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 envelope yeast
1 cup coconut milk, room temperature
1 large egg at room temperature
1/4 cup fresh or defrosted rasperries

    optional: Rasberry jam, coconut flakes

Melt butter. Add salt to oil, and mix with butter. In a small
bowl, beat the egg; add milk, stir in oil mixture. Add yeast
    and set aside.

Mix flour, guar gum, sugar in another bowl. Make a well in
flour and add the liquid ingredients. Stir in whole rasberries.
Stir to mix. Spray donut maker or muffin-tin with oil lightly.
Fill cups and close unit. Bake for 5 minutes in the donut
maker, or in the oven for about 10 minutes. Remove to rack to
cool. Repeat with the rest of the batter.

To serve, warm rasberry jam slightly, spread on top of donuts
then sprinkle with coconut flakes... or split donuts and put in
the middle, or.. cover with confectioners sugar.

    INFO:

Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the
help of Richard Webb 1:116/901 (Old School ToolBox). If
you have an ideKa for a column or a series of articles,
    please contact me :)

    New!
    MailingList subsriptions via
    www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe
but of course you can always link into your uplink and use
Tick or a tick compatible program.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth
when there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd
MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will
fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here
    :)

    Write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net

Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38
     Modem: 607-655-5652
     Binkp: 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555
     telnet mailer: filegate.net

If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net.

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or
    netmail Janis as above.

Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
          drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
    listing to:
      bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
