Some people mentioned missing Synchronet traffic to me, and I'm glad they
did. There was a break in the links that was repaired. You should see the
flow of SYNCDATA, SYNCWIN, SYNCDATA and SYNCHRONET once again.
Thank you to Rob Swindell and Michael Alyn Miller :)

                                  The old school TOolbox

                           By Richard Webb, 1:116/901

                           be aware, be alert

or, "good fences make good neighbors."

That statement regarding good fences could be the theme, in fact
probably should be the theme of the previous column I penned here,
and these next few. Last time in this space, we discussed the so-
called paradigm shift which appears to be occurring among people in
the developed world from actual social interaction to interaction
via electronics. As I stated, it's not all that new. Before the
term cyberspace was even a word some of us already interacted in
that place in a limited way. The telephone is a rather limited
form of cyberspace of course, as is amateur radio.

What's new about this so-called paradigm shift is the ways in which
we can leave ourselves vulnerable to criminals or others which we
might not wish to know many of the details about our lives. IT's
quite easy for someone with a desire to know to dig for some pieces
of data, and through inference deduce some things about us which
we'd rather they not know. The question is how we continue to live
in this world of cyberspace and protect ourselves. Is the only
real answer just pulling the plug?

Pulling the plug has numerous detriments. We all know that or we
wouldn't be reading this fine publication. The answer, as many
suburban dwellers have found, as have many farmers and ranchers, is
better fences. Often those are cyber fences, i.e. firewalls,
antivirus software, etc. But, sometimes those fences are methods
and practices we use when interacting with the rest of the world.
I'll concentrate on those in this, and the next few columns.

We learn a lot about the people with whom we interact online or on
the air just in daily conversation. I can tell you what many of
those I work with in the amateur radio community do or did for a
living, something about their socioeconomic status, the name of
spouses in many cases. For many of the cruisers off shore that we
assist I have contact information for family and loved ones in my
databases which is suppressed when others request information about
them via email from my system. But, if I punch the cruiser's call
sign into my local search function it comes up on my screen, saving
time if they ask me to relay some messages, and keeping such items
as phone numbers off of the air.

Amateur radio, like these "social networking' sites on the web is
pretty much an open medium. Anybody could be listening, especially
when using regular spoken words. Using Morse telegraphy eliminates
some of the potential eavesdroppers, but not all of them.

I've heard people use someone's call sign and fake distress calls
just to keep resources busy. Because of this, we often ask, if
time appears to permit, for a land based contact which we can call
and verify that this person is truly cruising on the seas when we
receive a distress call. Here is one form of "identity theft"
which is as old as amateur radio itself.

Ah yes, identity theft. An old and not so honorable pursuit. It
is said to be one of those "new" dangers. Again, it's not new.
Some of the ways to perpetrate it convincingly are a bit new
however. We've all heard it before. Shred that credit card offer
you don't plan to use before you throw it away, be aware of who has
your personal information such as social security numbers, etc. and
how it might be used or misused. Identity theft is a growing
problem in our culture. Just ask anybody in law enforcement.

Those of us who have been around Fidonet for over a decade will
remember the great debates over the use of PgP and other such
tools, both to encrypt private person to person mail, and clear
signing echomail messages. Some of the most fervent advocates for
clear signing public posts were those who felt that it was a valid
technique for proving that the writer of any given message was who
he/she claimed to be. I.e. if Richard Webb appeared to be that
author, and you thought I might be that Richard Webb, if other data
points matched you could then look at my PgP public key, or run the
key data to see if it matched mine. After all, if a link from the
system where Richard Webb usually posts was not secure packet
ramming and other techniques could easily be used to implement the
    spoof.

Were there any actual accusations of this sort? A few but fewer
than one might expect. One of the most humorous accusation of this
type I ever saw in fidonet was over an NC election in Canada and a
spoof done as a satire using the name of the then nc. Why weren't
there more? Most systems that were heavily involved in mail moving
did, and do operate in a secure fashion. I.e. no session password
shown with a supposed regular link, then no session, etc. I've
seen more accusations and allegations regarding this type of
behavior on USenet than I ever did see on Fidonet, and some in
groups I frequent are ongoing, and provable. The only way one can
tell the difference between the impostor and the real individual is
parsing the headers of the articles.

Along with identity theft comes another bear in these woods, and
every good malicious hacker will tell you it's one of the most
effective tools in the arsenal. This technique predates cyberspace
in almost all of its many forms and guises. A bit of tripping
through the target's trash and this one can net one of these folks
a treasure trove of personal data. Of course, we're talking about
the technique known as social engineering. Any good con artist has
to be an expert to be successful. However, if one isn't careful
the individual with malicious intentions doesn't even need to come
near you close enough to dumpster dive you to obtain such
information. This folks is the "new" part.

These days there are so many ways to get tripped up and
inadvertently spew forth personal data you might not wish to be out
there in the cloud. Marketers and others make it so convenient,
and with this convenience comes the requirement in many cases that
    you surrender control of your personal information, where it goes;
who has access to it. The "service" you're being offered appears
to be so convenient or fun however that you don't even think about
what you must surrender and where that data might go.

It's easy to just let it go and figure that you live in the
panopticon world, so what the heck, just let it go, after all
you've got nothing to hide. Just throw away the voluminous junk
mail, shred pieces that might be a danger and ... grin and bear it.
Delete that unwanted junk email, or tell that telemarketer to get
lost. But, sometimes that approach isn't going to provide you any
real relief. Sometimes the only option is to stop the junk mailing
phone calls etc. at their sources.

But, opting out, like breaking up, as the song says, is hard to do.
Why opt out? I'll discuss that a bit more next time.

    ==NY EggCream==
This beverage has no eggs and no cream... It's a very NY drink.. I grew up
drinking this every chance I could at our local drug store where the owner
had an old fashioned soda fountain. The real trick in it is to only use
Fox's U-Bet syrup (see link below).

          Take a tall, chilled, straight-sided, 8oz. glass
Spoon 1 inch of U-bet Chocolate syrup into glass
          Add 1 inch whole milk
Tilt the glass and spray seltzer (from a pressurized cylinder only)
off a spoon, to make a big chocolate head
          Stir, Drink, Enjoy

    Makes 1 serving

Get U-bet Chocolate syrup online here:

    The Slightly Crusty Sysop
    Sean Dennis
    1:18/200

Sorry for not having an article out for last month's FG; I got too busy
and simply forgot until it was too late!

Looking out the window that's next to my "office" desk where both of my
computers sit, it looks like spring is trying to get out. Yesterday we
set a new record for a high temperature: 71 degrees F. It was a beautiful
day but the days following it have been more tempered with clouds and rain.
I guess Ol' Man Winter isn't quite done with us yet, but that hasn't stopped
me from starting to work on my spring cleaning.

This month's column is about dialup BBSing. Considering the problems
Canadians have been having with getting their Internet bandwidth capped (but
at this time, that cap has been temporarily removed while the government
wheels move slowly investigating the CRTC's decision) and the loss of
Internet connectivity in Egypt during the protests earlier this month, I
have noticed a slight uptick in calls on my POTS (dialup) line. There
hasn't been a flood of calls or anything, but definitely more interest in
    it.

I've learned from some of my Canadian friends and fellow sysops that it can
be easier and cheaper for them to call the US long distance since it seems
many of the "packages" they can get on their landlines involve unlimited
long distance calling to both within Canada and the US. I know a few sysops
who are working on setting up POTS nodes on their BBSes again.

So what does this mean for Fidonet and BBSing in general? In the long run,
probably not much. People will still be using the Internet to do a majority
of their mail transfers and callers will use telnet to connect. However, a
small minority will start using POTS more often and more callers, feeling
the pull of nostalgia, might seek out and call POTS-capable BBSes. With the
advent of cheap unlimited long distance plans, many ex-sysops and users want
the feel of yesteryear by calling up a POTS-based system.

Don't toss out your old modem yet as there may still be some life in it yet.

As always, your comments are welcomed but your flames are not. I prefer to
be contacted via netmail-both crash and routed-at 1:18/200. My email address
    is sean@kd5col.info.

         Issue #: 8

In the last article we went over the death of Abel. Murder such as
this started from the disobedience from when Adam and Eve were in
the garden. Do as God commands you to so, without question and you
will be just fine. Defy him and go agaist what he says and he'll
have wrath written all over you until you repent. Now Cain is on
the Lord's side by the fear in Cain's eyes, he knew he would be next
if something wasn't done. So there was a deal made there.

(KJV) Gen 4:16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and
dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

(KJV) Gen 4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare
Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of
the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

For God's great justice, Cain is protected and now has a child and
a city even named after him, named Enoch. Generations pass...

(KJV) Gen 4:18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat
Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and
                         Methusael begat Lamech.

(KJV) Gen 4:19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the
one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

(KJV) Gen 4:20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as
dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

(KJV) Gen 4:21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father
of all such as handle the harp and organ.

(KJV) Gen 4:22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer
of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister
                         of Tubalcain was Naamah.

(KJV) Gen 4:23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah,
Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my
speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a
                         young man to my hurt.

(KJV) Gen 4:24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech
                         seventy and sevenfold.

This linage of family seems to have a familiarity in common and that
is murderers. Since God's beautiful creation, two men have already
been killed. It seems to be out of anger and jealousy. It's not
the point that you're just forgiven like that, you must put away
your selfish acts and turn from them. Start finding your spiritual
gifts and live the most with them.

(KJV) Gen 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son,
and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath
appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom
                         Cain slew.

Since Cain got another chance to do right, Adam and Eve have another
son and they called him Seth. Seth had replaced Abel. I just hope
this time Cain understands and does not let it greif take the best
         of him.

(KJV) Psa 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give
thee the desires of thine heart.

(KJV) Gen 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and
he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon
                         the name of the LORD.

This concludes this teaching. Later we wil resume on Genesis
Chapter 5. I hope you've been blessed and enlightened. Where there
is a will there is a way. Look for the Lord through his teachings.
He will take you places you've only dream.

If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to carry
MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't already. Remember
also to keep your head up high. May God bless you and keep you!

*** This conclude this issue of e-Ministries provided by Jon
             Justvig.

series of articles, please contact me :)

Email subsriptions via www.filegate.net, but of course you can always
link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program:

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material but I think until someone starts a
discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals , feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
     as above.

New email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to drdebug @
filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your bbs
listing to bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
     :)
