We're happy to see RCs and RECs voting in the FTSC election.
This isn't a time when voter apathy should be an issue IMO.
As Ward stated to me in the Z1C echo, we're also happy to
have a good number of volunteers for these positions. Again,
I'd like to thank all who are running for these seats as I
did in the last issue of Fidonews. These people who document
current practice in our network allow our software to be
updated.

Using Hatch with Replace
Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net
Most of our tic processors let you use the the replace
function. This keyword was originally included in Barry
Gellar's Tick v2.10, and is generally included in full-
functioning tick packages like Allfix, HTick, and others.
The idea was that as a new version of a package is released
in a Fidonet File distribution, an author or FDN
coordinator would want to remove an older version of a
package, replacing it with a newer version.
Not all FDNs use replace - some FDNs would rather, like the
PDN, maintain all copies of software for historical
and archival purposes. In this day of cheaper drive space,
keeping older files around wouldn't seem to be a problem.
In some areas though, replacing a file _is_ important. In
areas where Linux packages are released, this is especially
important because of security and problems with older
libraries. Those really old packages from the 1990's and
such may not even compile on today's linux boxes due to
incompatibilities of later versions of gcc, and various
libraries that are used in the compile process. Generally
speaking, you are going to see more packages that need to
be compiled in an area that releases linux files; in other
words, you generally won't see many binary (executible)
pre-compiled programs in a linux area, for example.. so
again, the need to hatch with replace becomes obvious. So
when I release files in the PDNUNIX file area, I'll usually
use replace with those files.
Barry Gellar's tick makes hatching with replace an easy
thing to do if you've got the REPLACE keyword in your
tic.cfg file.
On the command line a DOS command like the following would
do the trick:
HATCH /aSOFTDIST /fFOOV2.ZIP /dThis is the description
/xFOOV1.ZIP >> logfile.log
BBBS makes it even easier:
./bbbs bhatch -foov1.zip foov2.zip softdist
With BBBS, you don't need to specify a log, since your bbbs
config takes care of that.
Husky tic's docs looks to me like you would use replace it
this way:
hatch [replace []] [desc ]
hatch foo2.zip softdist replace foo1.zip description

FTSC Election Methods
By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net
The ftsc election for additonal and returning standing
members concludes on Sunday 11th December 20:00 UTC.
Hopefully by then all of our RCs and RECs will have voted.
Hopefully as well, RCs will have polled the members of
their regions so that the feelings of the members of that
region are taken into account.
As usual, R13C Michael Luko has done so. Thank you
Michael!
We use a password system in R13, so anononimity is
guaranteed when Michael posts the results of our elections.
So, for instance a network member can choose any user name
and password, and include it in his netmail to Michael if
he or she desires:
Subj.: FTSC vote
======================
Username: wilecayote
Password: acmecorp
Node number: mynode number
vote:
[...]
When Michael, or our election coordinator post the results
of our elections, you won't see the voting member's name
or node number, just his or her username and password, and
how they voted. This allows the voting member to check
that his vote was recorded correctly.
It's my hope that other regions work out some similar
method for elections. That way people don't have to worry
about repercussions regarding their own taste in elections,
and perhaps would be more likely to vote.
Some people in the Z1C echo have worried that all RCs and
RECs may not take part in this election by casting a vote.
With such a simple method such as R13 uses, our voting
turnout is generally good. Perhaps the FTSC Chair might
consider this method to protect privacy and encourage
voting in future elections. Just a thought..

Janis's Very Garlic Chicken
I was in mood.. I really wanted severly garlic-ed chicken
.. maybe that had to do with two Thanksgiving turkeys in
about one week haha.. I _LOVE_ turkey with it's cripy skin,
but afer a while you are definitely willing to wait a year
to have it again.
Whatever the reason, I wanted something seasoned to my
taste. YMMV :)
2 1/2 -3lb chicken, disjointed, cut up into serving pieces
1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
6 cloves garlic
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/2 tsp. dry lemmon zest or zest from one lemmon
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
pepper
extra virgin olive oil
Place the chicken pieces on a broiler pan. Salt and pepper
them lightly on both sides.
In a small bowl, cream the butter until soft. Using the
flat side of a large knife, crush the garlic cloves.
Remove the papery covering, and then mince the cloves of
garlic. Add to the butter. Also add about 1/4 teaspoon
garlic salt or an amount you are comfy with to the butter.
Knead the butter until completely combined. Add the lemon
zest and lemon juice to the butter and mix well.
Loosen the skin of the pieces of chicken, and underneath
the skin of each piece spread about a tablespoon of the
butter mixture. If you have any butter/garlic mixture left
over, just spread it on top of the pieces, but underneath
the skin is best.
Drizzle EVO over the pieces lightly.
Broil for 10 minutes skin side up.. then turn the pieces
over and broil for 10 minutes more, or until the thigh's
temperature in the thickest part measures 165 F.
Heaven :)

Hello RCs and RECs
Just a reminder that you have until Sunday 11th December 20:00 UTC
to vote.
=======================================================================
FTSC standing member elections, call for votes
Voting for FTSC standing members will commence on Sunday, November 27,
2011, 20:00 UTC.
All RCs and RECs are entitled to vote. Each voter may cast one "yes"
or one "no" vote for each candidate. Voters need not vote for all can-
didates, a non vote will be regarded as "abstain" for that candidate
Candidates must receive more "yes" than "no" votes to be elected.
Although not required, voters are encouraged to consult their
constituency before casting their votes. Debate with the candidates
is also encouraged. No need to hurry.
Voting ends at Sunday December 11th 2011, 20:00 UTC.
Persons holding both an RC and a REC position can only vote once.
The status of RC's and REC's will be determined by nodelist.310
for Z2 and for the other zones by nodelist.308 as issued by the
ZC in the zone where they reside.
This is the list of candidates:
Nominee Nominated by Accepted

FIDOGAZETTE Vol 5 No 19 Page 9 December 1st, 2011
-----------------------------------------------------------------
INFO:
Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help of
Richard Webb 1:116/901 (Old School ToolBox), and Sean Dennis 1:18/200
(The Slightly Crusty Sysop). If you have an idea for a column or a
series of articles, please contact me :)
New!
MailingList subsriptions via
www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe
but of course you can always link into your uplink and use
Tick or a tick compatible program.
Where to Send Your Articles
Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
something of consequence here :)
Write an article!
If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
your article off at:
Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net).
Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
as above.
Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)
To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
listing to:
bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
