In this issue, Richard discusses Groupmail. It's available
under BBBS if you set it up in the inet.bbb file.
Essentially you create a mailing list with BBBS's inet.bbb file.
Some fidonet people might shudder at the idea of a mailing list,
but they do have their purpose.
You can send the same message to multiple receivers using this
method.. To each his own :)
Speaking of which, you have to wonder if a mailing list can be
an inherently "bad thing".
I've seen some recent posts about my Newsletter subscriptions to
Fidonews (http://www.fidonews.ca/) and FidoGazette
(http://www.filegate.net/) in the FidoNews Echo, by Lee Lofaso,
as being some type of "unworthy" mailing list...
I would suppose because of his feelings about this, that he
doesn't use the internet at all to contact the BBS he posts
from?
Does this person dial up Sweden on a phone/modem to post from
Bjorn Felten's system? I rather think not.
At both sites mentioned above, one signs up for either or both
newsletters, and then you'll receive the original _archive_ as
an email file attach that would normally be released with TIC or
one of it's relatives as a netmail file attach.
Neither newsletter is released in unarchived 'list' format. Who
would want that? :) Now, if someone asks me to do something
like that, I could do that, but I haven't seen a need.
I suppose that Lee Lofaso just doesn't like the fact that people
might want to use an Internet tool they've got running on their
desktop, instead of using Fidonet Technology to grab Fidonews
(heaven forbid someone might want to read FidoGazette! ).
Hey, Lee.. this IS 2011. Fidonet can live very happily _using_
the internet without feeling shortchanged..
As a matter of fact, Fidonet has been "using the internet" for
over 20 years with Binkp, ftp, and telnet with our Internet
mailers... but I guess Lee doesn't consider those an internet
protocol, even though BINKP's protocol has been listed in
Linux's /etc/services file for YEARS!
BinkP was listed in the linux /etc/services file when I switched
to Linux from OS/2, in about 1993.. No doubt it was listed
there even before that date.
No, I think given some of Lee Lofaso's other posts that he just
has no clue in general, certainly about sensibility or about
practicality.
Anyway, this ed. was a good enough reason to post those links to
the subscription forms again. :)

The Old School Toolbox

Connectivity, Fidonet's Forte but More Work Needed
In this column over the last couple of years I've discussed tools
and techniques from the days of Fidonet's prime, with an eye toward
using them in today's Fidonet environment. Some of what I'm going
to discuss in the next couple of columns is a springboard off of
those, and ideas I've expressed in the Fidogazette and other
echoes.
First, as you know, I participate in a few usenet forums relating
to my profession. Even were I broadband connected, I still prefer
usenet and Fidonet with the offline capability to web based forums
which are often slow to load, and where finding that which you wish
to read and respond to cumbersome and time consuming. Every now
and then in those groups you'll find somebody who hosts a web based
forum coming in asking the leading luminaries in the subject who
are known well on Usenet to please please lend your communicating
skills on the topic to my web forum. Some of their target audience
responds that they already participate in one or two web forums as
well as Usenet, others just flat refuse. After all, their on the
go computing device can connect to usenet from anywhere, they can
download the content of interest to them and read it while
traveling to the next gig, or whenever they're inclined, even if
there's no wireless hotspot or other connection available.
Meanwhile we in Fidonet offer a variety of ways to access our
forums. If your favorite way to get your discussion fix is nntp
numerous systems offer Fidonet via nntp, or newsreader. There is
becoming a point; qwk packets; read online via the web or telnet,
etc.
When I talk to a lot of these web forum moderator/hosts I find they
don't know how to make their discussion group available via nntp or
an internet email list. Chances are the folks providing the server
for their forum don't offer it, because they don't know how either.
We in Fidonet can show them the way to get the participants they
want, even if those participants aren't going to fight through the
slow loading pages with all the graphics popups and advertisements
that these busy people aren't willing to wade through, but the
chances that they'll go for a concept such as echomail are slim.
After all, the feed cut if necessary is a double edged sword,
especially if you have to go up the chain of links a bit to
implement it. In addition to this, that feed cut can easily be
circumvented by the problem user, but we've hashed that out in this
column before in my series on echo management for new moderators a
year or so back.
Tom Henderson of system Enhancement associates, (yes you remember
him, one of the great founders of Ifna) gave us a possible
solution. It's called Groupmail. Groupmail worked on the
principle that a message was only seen once, after it had been
vetted by the moderator. The only systems that might handle a
message twice were those between the originating system and this
"top star" as they called it. Even if those systems handled the
message twice, it was not available to users of the message base
directly *until* the moderator had seen it, and allowed it to be
actually posted.
Groupmail may just be the tool we need to get these web forum hosts
to link specialized forums to Fidonet to bring in our users, and
other users who would participate but for one reason or another
refuse to use the www interface.
Group is still available. Our good editrix has it available on her
system, so if you're inclined to develop Fidonet tools download it,
have a look at the docs. It will be quite apparent what needs
updated about groupmail's operation. I'll touch on some of the
major points, then next time discuss its operation in greater
detail along with some thoughts on how it could work in today's
Fidonet environment.
The first thing that needs an upgrade for Group is that it needs to
support other archivers just as our modern echomail processors do.
Groupmail was written by the folks who brought us the arc
archiver. Sea and Pkware fought a court battle over Pkware's
predecessor to pkzip, pkarc. Although Sea won the court battle,
they lost the war for the hearts minds and hard drive space on file
repositories the world wide over. You don't see many .arc archives
in those parts, but you sure see a lot of zip compatible archives.
Zip has joined the gui generation with winzip. You don't see
winarc anywhere around now do ya?
There are a couple other small points that may be stumbling blocks
to the implementation of Groupmail in today's fidonet, but they're
easily overcome. They're especially easy to overcome for BInkd
systems with the special mailbox subdirectories, etc.
Finally, remember, I'm not a programmer. I'm what we call an
appliance operator in the ham radio world. My only contribution to
such an undertaking is that of an idea man. That's the only skill
I bring to the table.

Collecting Gold?

If you've been collecting old gold jewelry now may be a good time to
sell.
Thinking of selling some of the gold articles in your home for cash?
A few tidbits of information, which might help you decide one way or
the other as to whether to sell or not.
As you probably know, gold prices are quoted in troy ounces and the
purity of the gold is determined by the carats.
To calculate the approximate value of your gold piece:
If the current price of gold is $1850, divide the current price of
gold by 31.10. This will tell you the approximate price of gold per
gram. Now take your gold piece and weigh it. One pound (the kind we
use in a grocery store and on the bathroom scale) is approximately
454 grams (or one ounce equals approximately 28.35 grams). Calculate
the number of grams. You now know the gold price per gram.
Second, determine the purity of the gold. If it is 24 KT then it is
almost pure gold so you can use the amount calculated above. If it
is 18KT it is 75% gold, 14 KT is 58.33% gold 10KT is 41.67% gold.
Multiply the % gold times the price per gram calculated above.
Here is a sample calculation: If the gold price is $1850 and your
bracelet is 14KT gold and weighs 2 ounces Price of gold per gram
$59.48 ($1850/31.10)
28.35 (grams in an ounce) x 2 (number of ounces) x .4167 (purity of
the gold) = 23.63
Price of gold per gram $59.48 x 23.63 grams and purity of the gold =
bracelet value $1405.51
Of course, the dealer will subtract his profit from that. You can
take your jewelry to several places and see how prices vary. If the
price seems low, you don't have to sell. Just remember that everyone
(you, the buyer, and the company that melts the gold or auctions the
jewelry) will all get part of the cash.

Jason is seeking funding for three new projects:
= The 6502, a documentary about the MOS 6502 chip and the art of
assembly language programming.
= Tape, a meditation on the medium of tape, its rapid falling out of
favor, and the nature of recording our lives and loss.
= Arcade, a video podcast series about the place of arcades, these
worlds we enter to have fun with machines.
Why all three at once? As Jason puts it, fundraising all three
projects allows him to go to a state or country and "do all I
need" at once, which will save time and money.
Financial resources aside, Jason also mentions that he's racing
the clock for his interviews. He states, "Already a half-dozen
people who I interviewed for my films are gone, and there were
another handful who had died a year or two before my filming
began. And there's my clock as well - making documentaries is
pretty demanding and I'd like to bring all these subjects to
bear before moving on to other endeavors."
Good luck to you Jason, on these new documentaries.
I'm looking forward to his 6502 series :)

Best Chocolate Pudding

Chocolate Cornstarch pudding
4-5 umm generous servings.
(some people get 6 servings out of this, never happens here!)
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 cups whole milk
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, coarsely chopped,
or bittersweet Dark Chocolate
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine the cornstarch, sugar and salt in the top of a double boiler.
Slowly whisk in the milk, scraping the bottom and sides with a
heatproof spatula to incorporate the dry ingredients. Place over
gently simmering water and stir occasionally, scraping the bottom and
sides. Use a whisk as necessary should lumps begin to form. After 15
to 20 minutes, when the mixture begins to thicken and coats the back
of the spoon, add the chocolate. Continue stirring for about 2 to 4
minutes, or until the pudding is smooth and thickened. Remove from
the heat and stir in the vanilla.
Pour into a serving bowl or into a large measuring cup with a spout
and pour into individual serving dishes.
If you like pudding skin, pull plastic wrap over the top of the
serving dishes or bowl before refrigerating. To avoid the pudding
skin, place plastic wrap on top of the pudding and smooth it gently
down against the surface before refrigerating. Refrigerate for at
least 30 minutes and up to 3 days.

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
something of consequence here :)

(If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
