Just so you know, Michiel van der Vlist has changed the rules of the
IPV6 message echo. Now these changes may may only be applied to my
    system, but who knows.

He's published his new rules in the echo, and essentially the rules
now state that I at least can't connect any out of zone members to
his echo. I have 3 'out of zone' downlinks here who get that echo
from me, so I'd decided to just remove it.

I've decided to hold off a little bit with removing the echo.
We'll see what happens in the next few days.

Connectivity, Fidonet's forte but more work needed

In this column over the last couple of years I've discussed tools
and techniques from the days of Fidonet's prime, with an eye toward
using them in today's Fidonet environment. Some of what I'm going
to discuss in the next couple of columns is a springboard off of
those, and ideas I've expressed in the Fidogazette and other
    echoes.

First, as you know, I participate in a few usenet forums relating
to my profession. Even were I broadband connected, I still prefer
usenet and Fidonet with the offline capability to web based forums
which are often slow to load, and where finding that which you wish
to read and respond to cumbersome and time consuming. Every now
and then in those groups you'll find somebody who hosts a web based
forum coming in asking the leading luminaries in the subject who
are known well on Usenet to please please lend your communicating
skills on the topic to my web forum. Some of their target audience
responds that they already participate in one or two web forums as
well as Usenet, others just flat refuse. After all, their on the
go computing device can connect to usenet from anywhere, they can
download the content of interest to them and read it while
traveling to the next gig, or whenever they're inclined, even if
there's no wireless hotspot or other connection available.

Meanwhile we in Fidonet offer a variety of ways to access our
forums. If your favorite way to get your discussion fix is nntp
numerous systems offer Fidonet via nntp, or newsreader. There is
becoming a point; qwk packets; read online via the web or telnet,
    etc.

When I talk to a lot of these web forum moderator/hosts I find they
don't know how to make their discussion group available via nntp or
an internet email list. Chances are the folks providing the server
for their forum don't offer it, because they don't know how either.

We in Fidonet can show them the way to get the participants they
want, even if those participants aren't going to fight through the
slow loading pages with all the graphics popups and advertisements
that these busy people aren't willing to wade through, but the
chances that they'll go for a concept such as echomail are slim.
After all, the feed cut if necessary is a double edged sword,
especially if you have to go up the chain of links a bit to
implement it. In addition to this, that feed cut can easily be
circumvented by the problem user, but we've hashed that out in this
column before in my series on echo management for new moderators a
    year or so back.

Tom Henderson of system Enhancement associates, (yes you remember
him, one of the great founders of Ifna) gave us a possible
solution. It's called Groupmail. Groupmail worked on the
principle that a message was only seen once, after it had been
vetted by the moderator. The only systems that might handle a
message twice were those between the originating system and this
"top star" as they called it. Even if those systems handled the
message twice, it was not available to users of the message base
directly *until* the moderator had seen it, and allowed it to be
    actually posted.

Groupmail may just be the tool we need to get these web forum hosts
to link specialized forums to Fidonet to bring in our users, and
other users who would participate but for one reason or another
refuse to use the www interface.

Group is still available. Our good editrix has it available on her
system, so if you're inclined to develop Fidonet tools download it,
have a look at the docs. It will be quite apparent what needs
updated about groupmail's operation. I'll touch on some of the
major points, then next time discuss its operation in greater
detail along with some thoughts on how it could work in today's
    Fidonet environment.

The first thing that needs an upgrade for Group is that it needs to
support other archivers just as our modern echomail processors do.
Groupmail was written by the folks who brought us the arc
archiver. Sea and Pkware fought a court battle over Pkware's
predecessor to pkzip, pkarc. Although Sea won the court battle,
they lost the war for the hearts minds and hard drive space on file
repositories the world wide over. You don't see many .arc archives
in those parts, but you sure see a lot of zip compatible archives.
Zip has joined the gui generation with winzip. You don't see
winarc anywhere around now do ya?

There are a couple other small points that may be stumbling blocks
to the implementation of Groupmail in today's fidonet, but they're
easily overcome. They're especially easy to overcome for BInkd
systems with the special mailbox subdirectories, etc.

Finally, remember, I'm not a programmer. I'm what we call an
appliance operator in the ham radio world. my only contribution to
such an undertaking is that of an idea man. That's the only skill
    I bring to the table.

    Visiting Gettysburg, PA.
    By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

We visited the Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, PA.,
on Wednesday and Thursday (August 31/September 1st). This was
actually our second visit.. We'd made our first one when our kids
were very young (maybe 5 and 7 years old). We couldn't visit the
battlefield that first time, neither could we take part in many of
the historical 'shows' at the time (if they even existed back then).
The kids were just too young, and I was having a bad time then kind
of suddenly with the MS that I had. This time was different though.
I was feeling great, and we'd blocked out two days to just wander
about giving us the ability to see the entire battlefield along with
    it's monuments.

Fought during the first three days of July 1863, the Battle of
Gettysburg was one of the most crucial battles of the Civil War
having occurred at a time when the fate of the nation literally hung
in the balance. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the
Rebellion", it was the culmination of the second and most ambitious
invasion of the North by General Robert E. Lee and his "Army of
Northern Virginia". The Union "Army of the Potomac", long the
nemesis of Lee's army in Virginia, met the Confederate invasion at
the Pennsylvania crossroads town of Gettysburg. Under the command of
Major General George Gordon Meade, the Union army fought with a
desperation not always seen before on other battlefields. Despite
initial Confederate success, the battle turned against Lee on July
3rd, and with few options remaining to him, the general ordered his
army back to Virginia. The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg
resulted not only in Lee's retreat to Virginia but an end to the
hopes of the Confederacy for independence.

At the National Military Park, we first watched the cyclorama show in
a huge cyclorama theater. The initial 20 minute film was narrated by
Morgan Freeman. The show then progresses two stories up and then one
story down in the same building. When the attendents saw my balance
wasn't the best, they asked me if I'd like them to 'bring up an
elevator' for me, rather than have me use the escalators or stairs.
I said, sure, by then I was exhausted enough to sissy-out ..
but I didn't expect an elevator.. I figured that was some term for a
some other type of assistance device.. I was absolutely shocked when
the floor to the side of me opened up, and an ELEVATOR (real one,
just like the ones on other floors) pushed up through the floor, and
    opened it's doors hahaha

On the third floor, the Cyclorama show displays a painting, the
original, painted by Paul Philippoteaux in 1883. It depicts
"Pickett's Charge", the failed infantry assault that was the climax
of the Battle of Gettysburg. The painting is in the form of a
cyclorama, a type of 360° cylindrical painting. The intended effect
is to immerse the viewer in the scene being depicted, often with the
addition of foreground models and life-sized replicas to enhance the
illusion. Among the sites documented in the painting are Cemetery
Ridge, the Angle, and the "High-water mark of the Confederacy". The
completed original painting was 22 feet high and 279 feet in
circumference. The version that hangs in Gettysburg, a recreation of
the original, is 27 feet high and 359 feet in circumference, although
that version has lost some of its size due to the ravages of time.
Its original size is estimated at 42 feet high and 365 feet in
circumference. During the viewing of this painting (which you can't
believe, it's so beautiful), the museum supplements the painting with
light and sound simulating warfare as various battlefields are
    mentioned in the narration.

The entire cyclorama show had me near tears, it so well done.

We toured the battlefield next. When you tour the battlefield, you
can pay for a tour guide to sit in your car and point out the
battlesites, your can take a ride on a tour bus, or you can purchase
a CD in the 1st floor Museum Gift Shop. We decided to purchase a CD
so that we could take our time with the tour and get out of our car
when we wanted. Ron and I were mesmerized by all the places we'd
read about all of our lives (we're a bit of Civil-War afficionados,
since Ron's great Grandfather was wounded seriously there (he lost an
arm). The most amazing thing we decided was seeing what a difference
there was between actually seeing the battlefield as opposed to
viewing topographical maps or pictures. You just never got the full
sense of awe of the distances covered, the incredible courage it took
to charge across, or to defend some of that territory until you
actually saw the battefield up close.

Sometimes there was a sense amongst us of "my god, what were they
thinking?" as we saw some of the sites, like Little Round Top. The
field where Pickett's charge went across was another site that seemed
impossible. You can't imagine what Lee was thinking when he ordered
that charge. You could see that it had to be a real act of
    desperation.

The Wheat Field (that changed hands 6 times in 2 1/2 hours) and the
Devil's Den were images that will never leave your mind once you've
    seen them.

I've put some pictures my daughter took for us online on my blog if
you'd like to see them.. you do see some of the topology in these
    pictures, but...

    Spicy Asian Pork
    ================
6 Bonless Pork Chops (about 30oz. total)
    2 Tablespoons soy sauce
    3 Tablespoons oyster sauce
    3 Tablespoons brown sugar
    1/2" piece fresh ginger
    1 cinnamon stick
    1 teaspoon 5spice powder
    1 garlic clove, mashed
    2 teaspoons Mirin
    2 teaspoons saki
    1 cut up green onion

    1/4 cup light chicken broth
    4 Tablespoonse ketchup
    4 Tablespoons peanut oil
1 or two bunches Pok Choy leaves

Cut the port chops in half lengthwise. Place in bowl and add the
soy, oyster sauce, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, cinnamon stick and
5spice powder, saki, mirin and green onion. Poke each piece of meat
with a knife. After adding the above (except for the ketchup), work
into meat for a few minutes. Let marinate for 40 minutes.

Heat the oil in a skillet or wok. When hot, lift the pork from the
marinade and place in the hot oil. Brown on both sides until the
pork is golden brown. Add the ketchup. Cook uncovered for about
30 minutes. If the sauce dries out too much a touch of chicken broth
    and cook until absorbed.

    Serve over Pok Choy leaves.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    INFO:

Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help of
Richard Webb 1:116/901 (Old School ToolBox), and Sean Dennis 1:18/200
(The Slightly Crusty Sysop). If you have an idea for a column or a
series of articles, please contact me :)

    New!
    MailingList subsriptions via
    www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe
but of course you can always link into your uplink and use
Tick or a tick compatible program.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
    something of consequence here :)

    Write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop
    your article off at:

Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.
Send them instead direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
    as above.

Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to:
          drdebug @ filegate.net
or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your
      listing to:
        bbslist @ filegate.net
or post it in the fidogazette echo!
