In this issue, Richard discusses netmail and how important it is to
us in Fidonet. I couldn't agree more. From the beginnings of
Fidonet when Tom Jennings lived in San Francisco, California and
wanted to communicate with some friends of his who lived in
Baltimore, Maryland, netmail has been our means of individual
communication.
When Fidonet was in it's infancy, mail was sent from system to system
late at night. Telephone rates were much lower at night than they
were during the day. Routing netmail in this way allowed people to
communicate without spending a fortune on phone bills.
When you route your netmail message to a friend, you can send it
to your uplink, and he or she will do likewise. Ultimately, your
message will make it to one of our Star systems. From there, your
netmail will be sent on it's way to one of the Star system's links
who handles the area your mail is destined for.
Our Star systems maintain 'internal' routing charts that are updated
when any major mail system in Fidonet goes down or leaves Fidonet.
Mail traffic is typically traded between the Star systems every few
minutes, insuring quick delivery between systems.

The Slightly Crusty Sysop

Wow, it's HOT. It's been in the mid to upper 90s in temperature
around here and the humidity has been terrible. That makes working
outside quite miserable so my lawn has been looking more ragged these
days along with my now being employed, I just don't have a lot of
time to do extra things these days and that's why you've not seen too
much of me in the FG.
But recent events here in Fidonet have prompted me to write down my
thoughts. With the change of editorialship in the Fidonews, I think
Fidonet has made a great stride in improving itself. It is nice to
see someone or several "someones" make a command decision to clean up
the infection that has invaded Fidonet. I think that Gary Perkins,
while I don't know him very well, was and is an excellent choice to
be editor. I believe that he will bring much needed impartiality and
levelheadedness to Fidonews and Fidonet. I also appreciate Ross
Cassell's participation in this. Ross, who is my RC, and I have not
always seen eye-to-eye on many things but I feel that he and others
did the right thing.
When I originally started the FidoGazette, it was my intention to
have this newsletter do what the Fidonews was then unable to
accomplish due to its editor. While I am no longer directly involved
in many things Fidonet, I hope that people continue to enjoy the
Fidogazette. However, if it is decided to shut down the FG in favor
of unifying under the Fidonews, I can understand that and am happy
that all of you who read and participate in the Fidogazette have done
so and will continue to participate.
Fidonet needs to be more unified in order to survive and prosper in
today's society. This forceful step that was taken was a major step
in the right direction and I wish Gary well with his editorialship.
I honestly thought I'd never see the Fidonews go from being someone's
bully pulpit to being what it was before: Fidonet's official news
outlet.
I am glad to have been proven wrong.

The Old School Toolbox

Strengthening the FIdonet Bond
It seems that for the last year or so in this space I've been
talking to you about backup plans and personal security. I intend
to return to the subject of backup plans and strategies again, but
I'd like to give some attention to a subject I discussed in the
January 2011 issue.
From the dawn of Fidonet it's been said that the nodelist and
Fidonews are the glue that holds the net together. Yet I can tell
you that from the point of view of an old carpenter often there's
a little more than glue needed to create a good bond. Good
carpenters either use glue and screws, or glue and nails.
Metalworkers braze weld or solder, glue isn't that effective with
metals. But, we in Fidonet are more akin to wood, which comes from
living organisms, in other words, trees. Our network springs from
living organisms too, the people who use our net to communicate,
funny that's a topic I keep coming back to in this space too. In
fact, to me that bit about communication among people is why we're
all here.
So let me talk with you a bit about that other fastener that holds
our net together, which, like that glue which is made up of
Fidonews and the nodelist helps hold it all together. Whether you
want to consider it a nail or a screw is your choice, but it's as
important for a good bond as those two components of the glue.
That fastener is netmail, routed or otherwise, it makes no
difference what flavor of netmail, but netmail is supposed to be
what it's all about. It is the reason Fidonet was originally
developed. Echomail and file distribution came later.
I'm going to take a bit of a flier here and state that most
Fidonet sysops these days rarely bother with their netmail area.
If they use a system which has at its heart a dynamic mailer they
figure that netmail area is just a place for the mails that point
to bundles of mail and files to be sent. they look at their
favorite echoes and local message areas, check out the logs to see
who has uploaded or downloaded what, maybe validate a new user or
two, but the netmail area just sits there, after all it's the
province of their mail moving software. Does this sound like you?
First, I'd like you to rethink that position a little bit. I made
some arguments for this in the January issue of this fine
publication, which hinge on the concept that Fidonet systems should
be able to communicate with each other by Fidonet. An echo
moderator trying to resolve an issue should be able to communicate
with any sysop carrying his/her echo via netmail. Moderators who
are not themselves sysops should be able to interact with sysops
and echo users via routed netmail. Even though the internet is
often our transport mechanism of choice, internet email addresses
may not be easy for someone to find, but, by participating in an
echomail conference specs say that your system address *must*
appear in that origin line, as well as in path and seen-by lines,
and other places as well. IF you haven't seen it, have a look at
the January 2011 issue for a more in depth look at this.
What else should you do in addition to checking out your netmail
area once in awhile? Send a piece of routed mail to a Fidonet
friend occasionally, just to make sure you've got good connections
and that there are no technical problems with routed mail. I know
of one major system that has a lot of users that has some technical
difficulties with netmails sent from it, or did have as of last
winter.
As I argued earlier, both in this piece and the January piece, the
ability to communicate via Fidonet mail is crucial if we wish to
remain a viable active network.
What else should you do to assure netmail connectivity? Here are
a few other hints for you.
Make sure that your preferred method of Fidonet access can see
netmail addressed to all the akas you hold, i.e. if you are
involved with more than one Fidonet technology network, make sure
your system recognizes and can enable you to respond properly to
mail sent to any of your akas.
For folks who have more than one Fidonet address this is doubly
important. For example, a coordinator (anyone with a 0 after the
slash in his/her address) should be able to see netmail address to
any of those, and respond appropriately. If you are, for example,
NC of net 290, and your primary address is 1:290/10 you should be
able to see netmail addressed to either 1:290/0 or 1:290/10.
Just as important, you want to make sure that you post using the
proper address. Again I'll use net 290 as the example, since it
doesn't exist anymore. If you're posting with your coordinator's
hat on in your net's sysop echo you will probably want to be sure
that your 1:290/0 address is shown, where if you're just chatting
about who's going to attend the pizza party you might wish to post
as 1:290/10. This way folks who receive communications from you
with your official hat on can readily discern what's going on.
This is even more true when interacting with those you administer
via netmail.
To sum up, it's nice to have good glue such as our nodelist and
Fidonews, but a stronger bond is achieved when using additional
fasteners to strengthen that bond. In the case of Fidonet, that
additional fastener is to be found in your netmail area. It
behooves us all to make sure that we have functional routed netmail
capability, and can actually see and respond to netmails sent to
our systems.

Brief overview:
Blog Entries, Categories and Storage
PyBlosxom stores everything as files on the file system, there is no
database.
Each blog entry is a file.
Blog entry files are stored in a directory hierarchy in your
'datadir'.
Each subdirectory in your datadir corresponds to a category of your
blog.
Themes:
Themes in PyBlosxom are called flavours.
A flavour consists of a set of templates.
Flavours are stored in a directory called the flavourdir.
PyBlosxom comes with several flavours: html, rss20, and atom.
The PyBlosxom website maintains a flavour registry containing
flavours from contributors.
Plugins:
PyBlosxom has a plugin system, with plugins written in Python.
Plugins are loaded using the plugin_dirs and load_plugins
configuration variables.

A Non-traditional Clam Sauce and Linguine

This clam sauce is more in the style of my 'northern-Italian' family
rather than the Sicilian side. When I make a Sicilian clam sauce, I
use a lot of extra-virgin olive oil and a lot of garlic, fresh
Italian parsley and clam juice. I wanted a lighter and different one
for some guests that were coming to dinner, and this recipe was
perfect.
Ingredients:
2 dozen fresh clams
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
pinch red pepper flakes
handful fresh Italian parsley
1 onion, sliced thin
1 cup dry white wine
4 tablespoons butter
juice from 1 lemon
salt, pepper
Discard any clams with broken shells. Scrub the remaining clams well
and put in a bowl of salted water for about 10-15 minutes to remove
sand.
Heat the olive oil in a large 10-inch sauce pan and add the garlic.
Saute lightly until golden. Give the oil a sprinkle of red pepper
flakes (more or less to taste), add the parsley, the onion slices and
then add the clams. Add the wine, cover and steam for about 5-6
minutes. Check to make sure all the clams have opened and released
their juices, discarding any that haven't opened.
Reduce the heat to low and add the butter and lemon juice.
Remove from the heat once the butter melts, giving the pan a good
stir. Taste and add a touch of salt and pepper.
To make the clams easier to eat, carefully (they'll be hot!) remove
the top half of the clam shells on about half the clams.
Serve with Linguine and freshly grated peccorino cheese.

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues
with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into
something of consequence here :)

(If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed
attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here.

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).
Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
one and send it along!
Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).
