Volume V Number X July 15th, 2011 ======================================================================= Editorial ======== There's a flurry of discussions in the Fidonews echo this week concerning the style of moderatoring in that echo. As you know, the moderator of the Fidonews echo is the same fellow who holds the postion of publisher of the 'snooze, Bjorn Felten. Therefore, until he resigns his position as editor, we're literally stuck with Bjorn and his very negligent moderating. Bjorn subscribes to the hands-off appoach to moderating, in other words, no moderating at all as far as I can see. This non-moderation is just too familiar to those of use who reject Listservs, Newsgroups, and web-related discussion groups because they can be overrun with trolls, troublemakers and general creeps.. As a matter of fact, those internet areas are what bring a lot of people to Fidonet, because they don't want to have to deal with the kind of environment those groups and discussion areas foster. With no moderator in sight, these Internet trolls usually overrun online discussion groups, often killing any meaninful discussions, and filling their messages with hateful remarks, meant to stir up reactions from their intended "victim". The original variety of Internet troll developed years and years ago as the Usenet troll. These troublemakers would post the same annoying message into various discussions to increase their chances of angering a victim, but various other types of trolls also developed in time: Insulter trolls jump right in to conversations, hurling insults so that people will lose their tempers. Sneaky trolls pretend to be interested in the conversation, but soon begin posting messages designed to undermine any meaningful discussion. Colluding trolls work in pairs to try to steer the conversation's direction, hoping to destroy it altogether. So what type of trolls do we see in the Fidonews echo? I'd say all of the above, perhaps the worst at times being the moderator himself because he just can't let the chance go by to hurl insults on people he doesn't like, or doesn't agree with. He carries baggage from years past when Zone 1 was a much larger entity, as though he fears Zone 1's return to it's earlier size. Along with his anti-US statements, he and his colluders have let North American participants know that he doesn't appreciate those who spell his name with a non-Swedish character set, meanwhile, his name is spelled in a latinized style by his own ZC in the nodelist. Requests for Bjorn's resignation are ignored. Some Fidonet SysOps avoid the Fidonews echo, sometimes making it passthrough rather than "available" for users, since it has literally become an anti-US cesspool, and a place where one is more likely to be insulted, than not. It's been stated by his colluders that if you don't like Bjorn's style of moderating, you should just leave. What would we like? Well, I know what I would like: I'd like to see Bjorn turn the Echo and Fidonews publishing over to someone who cares a bit more about how the rest of the world views Fidonet, and who might actually encourage it's growth. Volume V Number X July 15th, 2011 ======================================================================= By Richard Webb, 1:116/901 Where Have We Been, and Where Are We Going "The future's uncertain and the end is always near." -- Jim Morrison If your endeavors depend on the data you've got backed up it's enough to make your head hurt, so it's easy enough to take Jim's example and follow the suggestion from the line previous to the one I quoted and wake up in the morning and get yourself a beer. Will that burnable media be readable when you need it? Will those portable hard drives spin? Did that flash memory card retain your data that you put on it six months ago? Hard to say, and the pros don't have any consistent answers for you. These issues have been with us almost as long as there has been electronic media, but they appeared to be much simpler. The archeologist of some centuries in our future could still easily build through inference and a bit of intuition a player to play those lp records. Magnetic tape machines would almost be as easy. At least, one might think so. Archivists and others in the know have always considered these to be close to an archival gold standard for just these reasons. Picture if you will, the archeologist of the future coming across a cd, or a jaz cartridge. So, we always said the lp record, or that reel of analog tape was the gold standard in archival. But then, suddenly we found ourselves with a big problem in the '90's and beyond to present day. One of the most popular tape formulations used in professional audio recording was made by 3M and marketed as Ampex 456 or Scotch 226. I've used tons of it over the years. I wish I had a dollar for every time I placed a "pancake" of 1/4 inch 456 on the left hub of a machine and an empty reel on the take up hub to tail wind a 10 inch reel for use by a client. I'd be a very rich man. We mastered lots and lots of stuff to this Ampex 456. If you were into rock 'n roll from the late sixties onward chances are some of your favorite music was mastered to Ampex 456. Usual work flow went like this at most studios I've been associated with. You did your mix down master, made a safety after, or simultaneously if you had two mix down decks, sent one off to the folks who cut the master for the lp and stored the other one in your version of a tape vault, sometimes temperature and humidity controlled, but more often not. Such features as temp and humidity control were available to the big record companies, but hard to implement for your home town recording studio whose overhead was already quite high enough thank you. You made that backup of the master, all edited just as was the master with leader tape between selections, because every once in awhile during the cutting process the machinery got the munchies for magnetic tape, and thence went the master tape that the client had spent a couple thousand dollars or more to make. So, even in the world of analog tape we were thinking backups. We just didn't have the facilities to store it all properly, but more on that in a moment. So this stuff sat in its carefully labeled boxes on shelves for years, when all of a sudden somebody needed to play it back. Now was when the fun began, because, it was supposed to be simple. Put the reel on, rewind it, (you always tail wind masters but that's another story) and listen to the test tones you printed on tape possibly with an oscilloscope in line to calibrate your equipment. This was especially true if you were intending to migrate the material to a digital format. But suddenly your simple project turned into a nightmare. A squeal came from the machine and the tape didn't want to travel freely along its path. Inspection of the tape path showed a deposit of some black sticky gunk. We suddenly found that we were the victims of "sticky shed" syndrome. So you took the reel off, cleaned the tape path with isopropyl alcohol and made some rather unhappy noises not fit for public consumption. Maybe later on (this was often before the internet now remember) you learned that there was a fix for those tapes. You learned that you could cure "sticky shed" syndrome. What happened was the metal oxide coating on those tapes had started to come loose from its plastic binder, and when you tried to play that reel of Ampex 456 or Scotch 226 all you did was deposit a gummy goop on your tape heads, capstans and other components. But, you could "bake" them at around 130 degrees for a few hours, making sure to control the temperature carefully so as not to overbake, then immediately play them and transfer to other media. There was sure a lot of agonizing about it though for over a decade. When audio professionals first started gravitating to the internet in large numbers, and even if I recall correctly on Fidonet echoes for such purposes the "tape baking" solution was a frequent topic of conversation. I think that back in the day I posted a "tape baking" faq in the studio_101 echomail conference about twice a year. This was so common that most mastering facilities that specialized in digitization of these old analog master tapes rigged themselves up a little box for baking tapes with a lightbulb, thermostat to control it, and racks to place reels of tape. Put 'em on to bake overnight when you went home, come back in the morning, go through the usual procedure you'd use to capture that analog data in digital form. But for years the question would come up in internet forums about what to do with these old tapes that left black goop on the tape path and weren't playable. Such simple fixes aren't available for our digital data however. If that cd-r or dvd can't be read all you've got is a coaster, where you thought you had a reliable backup of important data. If that little motor in that removable hard drive won't spin the platter(s) then you've got the same problem. These devices hold a whole lot of data too, and that's where the real problem comes in. As a final exercise for the reader consider what that reel of tape contained in computer terms. Let's take our usual 44.1 khz 16 bit sampling standard for our compact disks, as that's fairly comparable to these two track masters. Figure that reel contains one side an album's worth of material, i.e. 5 songs with an average length of 4 minutes each. The other side of that lp record would be on another tape often. So now we have 20 minutes of stereo audio. Remember in the first installment in this series we stipulated 5.5 mb/track minute. We have two tracks, of course being stereo. That's 11 mb/minute, times 20 or 220 megabytes. The whole album of course, figuring 10 songs of that average length is 440 megabytes. But, we're talking an album side, or half that, 220 megabytes. The first tape drive I bought to back up my bbs didn't hold that much data. Neither did the hard disk I operated a busy fidonet hub system from. That's chump change by today's storage standards. Consider that physical media in today's terms however. The losses entailed by a backup that won't load or be accessed are staggering. Consider consigning your life's creative work to such a storage device. Backups and redundancy are the keys to its survival. But the key to using that system is knowing how to get to what you need quickly and reliably. More on that later. Review: Bionaturae Gluten Free Pasta By Janis Kracht Bionaturae, producers and distributer of those fantastic strained bottled tomatoes that I use, has started selling gluten free macaroni (Spaghetti, Elbow, Penne, Fusilli). While some other companies make gluten-free pasta containing simply rice, rice bran and water, Bionaturae's is the absolute BEST. The ingredients are Rice flour, potato starch, and soy flour. The dedicated facility where it is made is totally egg, corn and peanut free. The texture of Bionaturae's macaroni is so close to regular wheat/semolina macaroni, you'll find yourself checking the package label to make sure you didn't grab the wrong one! With other gluten-free companies, after cooking the macaroni you have to rinse it immediately. Overcooking can be disastrous. With Bionaturae's macaroni, you strain it and serve. The flavor is fantastic, and it's texture is in my opinion, undetectable from normal gluten pasta. Cost: $3.69-$5.59, depending on where you buy it. Wegmans in Binghamton NY sells Bionaturae GF pasta for $3.69. Bionaturae Organic Gluten Free pasta: =Certified Organic & Kosher =Imported from Italy =No rinsing after cooking =Unique formulation gives true pasta-like texture Page 7 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! Volume V Number X July 15th, 2011 ======================================================================= INFO: Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help of Richard Webb 1:116/901 (Old School ToolBox), and Sean Dennis 1:18/200 (The Slightly Crusty Sysop). If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! MailingList subsriptions via www.filegate.net // lists / ?p=subscribe but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program. Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material... lacking that, I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article, feel free to drop your article off at: Email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer (If you are using routed fidonet mail, don't send articles as routed attaches. They will fail somewhere along the path before getting here. Send them instead direct to filegate.net). Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554). Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. Email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to: drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the FidoGazette bbslist, email your listing to: bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
