This is the first of the bi-weekly issues of FidoGazette. Our
intention is to continue with this and then possibly go to a weekly
    schedule.

Thank you to all who make this possible!

I'm attempting a blog, still working at it though. Right now it's
pretty boring and the comments don't work as intended :) Hopefully
I'll have some time to fix the comments shortly. I'm using an
interesting python program named PyBloxsom (pronounced PyBlossom)
which was written following the style of another blog generator, named
    Bloxsom (perl based).

You can see the initial setup here http://www.filegate.net/blog/
With pybloxsom, you can use different 'flavours' for the pages
pybloxsom renders, or you can build your own. The one I'm using is one
that I have been playing with for a while.

    New Cheepware Releases
    Sean Dennis
    1:18/200

I'm happy to announce that I've finally refreshed nearly the entire line of
Cheepware BBS doors and re-released them all. For those that don't know, I
develop my own line of BBS doors and sysop utilities under the Cheepware
name and have been developing these programs since 1998. All of my programs
are freeware (hence the name of my software line, "Cheepware", a pun on
    "cheap wares").

The doors will run on any BBS that supports 16-bit DOS doors, uses a FOSSIL
driver, and can create either the DOOR.SYS (52-line) or DORINFO1.DEF ("RBBS"
style) dropfiles. Some of my better-known doors are "The Magic Oracle" and
    "Chinese Zodiac".

The utilities come in either DOS (16-bit), OS/2 (32-bit), or Win32 flavors.
Many of the utilties are BBS-specific and were written for my use over the
years with many BBS software packages I've run such as Maximus, Telegard,
Ezycom, ProBoard, and Shotgun Professional. I have several "general"
utilities that will be helpful to a sysop no matter what BBS or OS they run.

I have also released other authors' software via my distribution system.

If you're interested in Cheepware, you can obtain a text file that lists
all of the doors and utilities I've written, as well as the other software
I've released for other authors, via the following:

-- Netmail : Send a netmail to Infomail at 1:18/200 with the subject
line CHEEP. The list will be sent back to you via routed
                         netmail.

-- Email FREQ : Send an email to bbs@kd5col.info with the subject of
FREQ and the message body of FREQ CHEEP.

-- Crashmail FREQ: Crash FREQ CHEEP to 1:18/200.

-- WWW : Visit http://kd5col.info/cheepware.html (not always up
                         to date).

-- BBS : Visit my BBS via telnet (paragon.darktech.org), my
                         website (http://kd5col.info/goto.html; requires
JavaScript and Flash), or via dialup at
                         +1-423-434-0851.

-- Other ways : You can find me in the DOORGAMES or BBS_CARNIVAL echoes
and I am happy to help you with any questions you
may have. You can also netmail me at 1:18/200 if you'd
                         like.

I've got several new ideas for doors in the works but right now it's just
finding the spare time to work on them all.

I appreciate any feedback you might have about my software and would hope you'd
give it a try on your BBS soon!

                                  The Old School Toolbox

                           By RIchard Webb, 1:116/901

                         The Real Paradigm Shift

I stumbled across a news story in February which featured proposed
"do not track me" laws which might be introduced in congress. Such
laws would apply to commercial entities, and in this writer's
opinion give folks a false sense of security. I grant that such
laws would keep commercial entities from tracking your viewing and
spending habits as you surf the web, but that doesn't eliminate
many of the real dangers. There are laws on the books prohibiting
burglary too, but if they make you feel safe enough to leave your
house unlocked when you leave for the day then I want some of
whatever you're having. Remember that old public service TV ad
back in the late '60's which admonished folks to "lock your car,
take your keys" and aired quite frequently? Even then, you'll
notice that devices such as "the club" are big sellers. A common
rite of passage for teenage boys back then was to learn how to "hot
wire" a car, even though many of us never stole one, even for a
joyride. We've made that more difficult since those days, and
should do the same for our personal data.

No matter how many laws are passed those laws are subject to
interpretation by the courts. They too are finding it hard to keep
up with new methods of interaction and communication. That's why
we need to be aware of all this stuff, and proceed with caution in
choosing the services we use, and what information we might allow
    to be shared with others.

This is scary stuff. That's why Orwell's book was banned so many
places. After all the benevolent ones, the cops and others of that
sort will tell you that they're well aware of your civil liberties
concerns. But we've all heard the horror stories about what
happens when civil liberties are disregarded by the enforcers of
the law. That still leaves us with the questions regarding the
salesman, the foreign government endeavoring to coopt our broadband
connected systems in a malevolent botnet, etc. Do they care about
your civil liberties and your rights? NO they don't, they care
about achieving their objectives, whether that be the sales quota,
ripping you off or winning the battle. The panopticon isn't as
scary if you know how to construct good fences, and good curtains
or shades. We in Fidonet have been accustomed to thinking about
these issues long before the average person even needed to be aware
of them. We should bring that awareness to our neighbors coworkers
    and friends.

Anybody who hasn't lived under a rock has heard of medical records
being hacked; banks and financial institutions being intruded upon
by hackers and other sorts of miscreants. But, we don't think
about all that convenience. We don't think that when we use that
preferred customer card to get a few cents worth of discount or
other perks that the retailer providing us this preferred customer
card is tracking information about our purchasing habits. To whom
does that retailer provide this information? We really can't say
for sure, and they sure aren't rushing right out there to disclose
    it.

We emit a steady stream of personal information, often without
realizing it. we use that credit card to buy things at the store,
often with that aforementioned preferred customer card. WE fill
out an online survey which can be correlated with our email
address. We sign up for internet mailing lists relating to our
hobbies professions and interests. We acquire a driver's license,
own vehicles; register to vote; enroll children in school; pay
various local state and Federal taxes. Often we allow folks to
keep on file that handy nine digit number the government gave us,
commonly known as a Social security number. I provide my social
security number only where required by law, and then ask that if
possible it not be provided when that organization or agency's
databanks are queried. I also shred my junk mail which might
    contain personal information.

Even though we think that otherwise reputable longstanding
companies and other popular sites on the net will utilize our
personal information responsibly and ethically sometimes we soon
learn different. Not just is it often difficult to get them to
cease and desist with dumping your information out there, but often
one finds that opt in is the default, and "opt out" takes a bit of
work. Our good editor can tell you a story about classmates.com
which was I'm sure not a lot of fun to go through. she couldn't
get any sort of positive resolution from those folks at all until
she threatened to bring her state's attorney general into the loop.

I don't care for webmail, I don't social network in the modern
meaning of the term. I don't have time, and I'm not willing to be
bombarded with junk. I exercise my options to opt out of marketing
campaigns, place myself on do not call lists, etc. If I want what
you're selling I'll seek you out.

Even before the development of firesheep which allows someone to
hijack your browser session whilst you use that wi fi hotspot I had
a high degree of distrust of such facilities. I wonder how many of
the multitude of public hotspot users are aware of this
    development.

As I keep repeating in this column, we in Fidonet were out there on
that leading edge of explored cyberspace and bumped up against
many of these issues. Fidonews articles looked at privacy
questions from both sides. A couple of futuristic fiction pieces
were published which also touched on them in that organ as well.
We as Fidonet sysops and users can do a lot to educate our families
and friends regarding these issues. To slightly modify a phrase I
used to read often, we can teach them to know what to expect when
they connect. Your family and friends are already aware of your
Fidonet hobby I'm sure. They bring you their esoteric queries on
computers and computer networking I'll bet. So, when this subject
comes up in conversation with them you've a perfect opening to talk
with them about protection. Protecting your personal information,
as with all other aspects of personal security, begins with you.
Ignore or neglect it at your peril.

If you felt this series of articles was a bit scary, and maybe a
bit melodramatic I'm sorry about the latter part. AS for the scary
part, I meant to emphasize the scary. Don't just shudder when you
consider how scary it was however, do something about it. Protect
yourself, and encourage those you care about to do the same.
Demanding more government regulations isn't really going to help
here. You can't even depend on government enforcing laws already
on the books, or interpreting them so as to protect your privacy.
Make good personal security a habit and you'll have less reason to
    complain later.

Review: Atlas Pasta Machine Spaghetti attachment

        in it's place.

Marcato Pasta machine. Feeding it through the spaghetti attachment
was next.. As I rolled out the spaghetti, I hung it from a pasta
holder (any large bowl will work well). I dusted the spaghetti
with flour to keep it from sticking.

Boil in salted water for about 3 minutes for Al Dente.

It tasted great. The flour mix I used was a combination of
Semolina and extra fancy durham wheat by Hodgson Mills.. also a
great product! No more guessing on the balance of Semolina and
wheat flours... this mix is perfect for pasta dough.

        Price: Spaghetti attachment, about $28.00.

     - e-Ministries
     - by Jon Justvig - May 9, 2011 -
     --------------------------------------------------------------------

    Issue #: 11

In our last few issues, we've discussed the linage from Adam to
Noah. Read on to discover what had happened to man and the Earth
because of the wickedness that was present in this world.

(KJV) Gen 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on
the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto
                       them,

(KJV) Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that
they were fair; and they took them wives of all
                       which they chose.

A great multitude filled the Earth and God had seen what these
people were doing. Check out this verse:

(KJV) 2Pe 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease
from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they
have exercised with covetous practices; cursed
                       children:

The eyes of man and women have been corrupted ever since they ate
of the forbidden fruit. Sin, or the disobedence of God's
instructions have been broken repeatedly since their first creation.

(KJV) Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive
with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days
shall be an hundred and twenty years.

From this day, man no longer lived to be seven to eight hundred
years of age. A hundred and twenty years are the days numbered
even for this very day. We must not live in the flesh and do
things that the men of flesh do. We must do things that are in
the spirit, pray in the spirit and be obedient according to the
word of God. We must live in love always, whether our flesh wants
        to or not.

(KJV) Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and
also after that, when the sons of God came in unto
the daughters of men, and they bare children to
them, the same became mighty men which were of old,
                       men of renown.

(KJV) Gen 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great
in the earth, and that every imagination of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

(KJV) Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on
the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Disobedience and wickedness grieves the Lord and the spirit. He
will not tolerate such things. God had created man on this earth
for us to be as his children and look at how we treat our Father
in heaven. He gave us the precious gift of life, created with
his hands from the dirt of this earth. Shouldn't we have more
respect for God and treat him as he should be treated? Yet a lot
of us talk down against God and blames Him for the trouble that
happens to us here on Earth. He give us the freedom of choice.
It's up to us to make good consequences and not bad ones. Let us
let Him live in us because He is greater than He who is in this
        world.

(KJV) Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have
created from the face of the earth; both man, and
beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of
the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

At this point, God is finished with what He created. He was
very angry at man and his wickedness. You can imagine what
        happens next.

(KJV) Gen 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

Thank goodness not all will be lost because there was a man
undeserving of the Lord's favor, He gave it to him anyway. Noah
is the man we've led up to this point from the beginning of Adam.
God has a plan for Moses.

(KJV) Gen 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just
man and perfect in his generations, and Noah
                       walked with God.

(KJV) Gen 6:10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and
                        Japheth.

(KJV) Gen 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the
                        earth was filled with violence.

(KJV) Gen 6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it
was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his
                        way upon the earth.

(KJV) Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is
come before me; for the earth is filled with
violence through them; and, behold, I will
                        destroy them with the earth.

God was very serious when he seeks wrath on those that are
disobedient to him and go against his Word. He was not lying by
saying do this and you will surely die. Let us make very wise
decisions daily and do the right thing. Do not let temptation
lead you on the path of destuction. Pray to our Lord without
ceasing. Wickedness is always there waiting for someone to
devour. Don't be a victim. We have it in our heart to do the
right thing. Lets do it. Next time we will see what happens to
Noah and see how God is in control.

If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to carry
MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't already. Remember
also to keep your head up high. May God bless you and keep you!

*** This conclude this issue of e-Ministries provided by Jon
            Justvig.

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material but I think until someone starts a
discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals , feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
     as above.
