        "Buckwheat is Dead" Syndrome

Years ago, I believe in the early 1980's, Eddie Murphy created a
character based a character in on the 1950's tv show, "The Little
        Rascal's".

Murphy's 'grown-up' "Buckwheat" was hilarious and the schtick took off
on "Saturday Night Live", where Murphy introduced the character.

After a while though, Murphy grew weary of the repeated requests to "do
Buckwheat... do Buckwheat" and so one day Murphy did what he had to
do.. and Buckwheat was shot to death, assassinated if you will, on
camera in front of 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.

That killed off the character. Kind of.

So many episodes played off the Buckwheat is DEAD! line.. for instance,
the players would be participating in a "BUCKWHEAT IS DEAD" skit.. to
be interupted by a newsflash stating, "YES, BUCKWHEAT is REALLY DEAD".
Soon any news skit was interupted with the same.

Back then, the talented fellows in "Saturday Night Live" picked up on
the media's hunger for death and dying and it was Eddie Murphy who
was essentially was the one to slam the media where it hurt. Obviously
with Osama Bin Laden's death this week, the media hasn't learned much.

But need I say it again...

        BUCKWHEAT IS DEAD!

                            The Old school Toolbox

Welcome to the panopticon, Part II

Unless you're a student of literature you're asking what the
panopticon is. The panopticon was a fictional place, if I recall
it was a prison. Within this place the inmates could be watched,
all day, every day. Bathing, eating, sleeping, copulating,
everything they did was done under the watchful scrutiny of their
keepers. Mr. Orwell took that to its conclusion in his famous
science fiction novel. The ideas it presented were so scary to
behold that the book was banned in many education institutions in
fact. It was banned, because even then it made people think about
how their benevolent government might collect information which
could be used for malevolence, not benevolence. Our always
connected world is the panopticon writ large. It's here, it's
right now, and your understanding of its nature is crucial, not
just to protect yourself, but to protect the ones you love and care
    about most.

Most of what I discuss in this series of articles is common sense,
which we often are encouraged to discard in the name of
convenience, or fun. Indeed they can be both, but so is playing
with fireworks after the barbecue and a boat load of beer on the
fourth of July. One wrong move however and fun soon turns into
something which is the exact opposite.

All these online tools sure do a lot for us. But, utilizing them
without an awareness of how they work can leave you vulnerable.

Yeah yeah I know, you're not doing anything wrong, you've got
nothing to hide. THat's the usual knee jerk reaction folks get if
they're like me and start talking to people about protecting
themselves and their personal data. But, let me make another bold
statement here. Protecting your personal data, and the machines
which house it is essential for the defense of your country.

Back in January of this year two professors at the University of
Cincinnati published a paper which takes the position that the
cyber security of the United States is being threatened in large
part because the public is not actively involved. They equate
today's citizen role in cybersecurity to the Civil Defense efforts
developed at the advent of the era of atomic weapons. Political
science professors Richard Harknett and James Stever published
their findings in "The journal of Homeland Security and Emergency
Management." they posit that the role of the citizenry in
maintaining proper cyber security is largely ignored. I would agree
with that assessment. We've all seen it, the w32 circam virus and
many others. These always online systems with their broadband
connections improperly secured that are used as botnets, etc.

For the most part, awareness of how these tools work, their
advantages, disadvantages and other concerns is nonexistent. AFter
all, they're so convenient. "Just ignore the ads and get on with
it ... " is the mantra. I'm sorry, but ignore the ads, and the
gaping holes in your personal privacy and the security of the net
in your country at your peril, and everybody else's.

I'm not talking about spyware and trojans, I'm talking about being
aware of some simple truths about a lot of these convenient tools,
i.e. yahoo webmail; gmail, hotmail, etc. Then there's all this
great social networking stuff that our kids use as they spew
personal information like a firehose. Were I raising children
these days their activities on such sites would be closely
scrutinized. They might spew information about dad or themselves
which is nobody's business. Even worse is the fact that we
consider the convenience before we consider our exposure to risk.

Not so hot spots! It's sure handy to sit down while having lunch
at the restaurant or just hanging out in a public place to fire up
that laptop and doo all this stuff on the web. But, this isn't
your secured wi fi network at home. You *have* properly secured
your wireless network at home haven't you? But, if these public wi
fi hotspots were so secured they wouldn't be public.

Those wi fi hotspots are sure handy, but they're not secure enough
for you to be sending personal information such as bank account id
numbers passwords and the like. Anybody could be tuned in on your
signals, and once they've got your personal data they can clean out
your bank account, change passwords and lock you out of your own
accounts, etc. Be careful what you do when utilizing them. Wait
to handle that bank transaction until you're at the hotel that
evening and actually plugged into the wired network or using secure
networking techniques. Again remember that not all big brothers
    are benevolent.

We face enough danger from identity theft, from miscreants who
would utilize our personal information for criminal purposes and
other such that we don't need to add more dangers. We ask our
favorite online retailers to use secure web sites to safeguard our
credit card information. We hope that the data our medical service
providers have relating to us is secured from unauthorized
snoopers. Do we really know for sure? The answer of course is no
we don't. But, when we place ourselves at risk by not paying
attention we really have nobody else to blame when it turns around
and bites us. When was the last time you left your car parked in
front of the store with the key in the ignition? When was the last
time you left your dwelling unlocked when going out for the day?

Securing your personal privacy, and your personal information
starts with you. Even if you think that wi fi hotspot is operated
by reputable folks consider who else might be tuned in to your
signals. Be careful what you post on social networking sites, and
for God's sake monitor your kids and their use of such sites and
techniques if you still have kids living with you. You have a
right to protect your privacy, and if your children don't grasp
that simple fact then they're not responsible enough to be using
    computers without adult supervision.

It's quite possible for you to fight back, but to do it, you need
to take charge. Remain in control of where your data goes whenever
possible. Remember that not all big brothers are benevolent. My
younger sister would have told you that on any given day when we
    were kids.

    ====Baked Polenta=====
    This polenta is heavenly :)
You start with a simple regular poleta on the stovetop, and then layer
    the polenta with cheese.
    Ingredients:
    1 1/2 cups yellow cornmeal
    4 cups chicken stock
    1 onion, finely minced
4 ounces Swiss or Gruyère, thinly sliced
    4 ounces mozzarella, thinly sliced
    1⁄2 cup grated Parmesan

    From "_The Joy of Cooking_"
    ===BAKED POLENTA===

    6 servings
Heat in a large saucepan over medium heat:
2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
Add and cook, stirring, until translucent, about 5 minutes:
      1⁄2 cup finely chopped onion
Stir in and bring to a boil:
3 cups water or 2 cups each chicken broth and water
    Stir together in a bowl:
2 cups water or 1 cup each chicken broth and water
      1 1⁄2 cups yellow cornmeal
Gradually stir into the boiling water. Cook, stirring constantly, over
low heat for 15 minutes. Remove from the heat. Meanwhile, preheat oven to
350°F. Lightly butter a shallow 2-quart baking dish. Have ready:
4 ounces Swiss or Gruyère, thinly sliced
      4 ounces mozzarella, thinly sliced
      1⁄2 cup grated Parmesan
Pour half of the polenta into the baking dish. Smooth with a spatula.
Cover the polenta with half of the cheese.
Spread the remaining polenta on top and cover with the remaining
      cheese.
Pour over: 1⁄2 cup heavy cream, half-and-half, or milk
Bake until the top is browned and bubbly, 35 to 45 minutes. Let stand
    for 10 minutes before serving.

Migrating a Fidonet system to Windows 7

                           By Michael Grant (1:250/306)

After the latest round of spyware attacks, especially the recent and
very stubborn "fake security" scam, I decided to drop Windows XP in
favor of Windows 7, since my other Windows 7 computer seemed to be much
more secure and stable, and was largely unaffected by the fake security
malware. I did however run into a few pitfalls in the changeover, so I
thought I should write an article in the hope that it may assist others
who wish to switch their system over.

My system is a simple one presently, since I no longer run a BBS or a
mail hub, so I may not have all the answers for you, but there should
be a few useful tips that most Fidonet users can use.

First, to mail tossers. Squish is my preferred tosser, and it seems
to run very well under Windows 7, but there is an issue with file
permissions. The best solution I have found is to right click on all
the directories used by your tosser (i.e. your message base store
folder, Squish folder, mail inbound & outbound folders, etc.), and
change the properties of the folder under the "security" tab. There
should be a list of objects under a box titled "Group or User names",
and one of those objects should be named "Users". Change the
permissions for the "Users" object to "Full Control". Do the same for
all folders that your Fidonet system may need to make changes in.

Environment variables are easily set Under "Control Panel", "System
and Security", System". Under "Advanced System Settings" on the left
of the "System" menu, there should be a button marked "Environment
variables". This is vital for setting your path variables for your
archiver and tosser, as well as setting the SQUISH or FIDOCONFIG (for
    hpt) environment variables.

Next, to readers. I have used GoldEd for a very long time, and was
frustrated to find that it did not work properly under Windows 7. Part
of the problem was the file permission snag mentioned above, but some
versions of GoldEd just flat out do not work at all under Windows 7.
These include the original DOS, DOS386, and W32 versions of GoldEd.
GoldEd+ does however seem to work properly. I am currently running
ver. 1.1.4.7, and it's stable. I assume the newer versions (1.1.5.x)
    will work as well.

I also got a rudimentary setup of MadMed working, and I think that
MsgEd should work as well. Two GUI-based editors, WinEd and FTNEd,
also work. One final note on readers; they will only work in a
windowed environment. Full screen mode does not work under Windows 7.
I suggest modifying your desktop shortcut properties and changing the
font size to 10x18 in order to get the largest window box possible.

As a mailer, I use BinkD for Windows, ver 2.13.2.2. It works
flawlessly under Windows 7. I run my polls and mail tossing via batch
files, coupled with a cron-style scheduler program. I used to use
SplinterWare's Windows Scheduler v1.5b under Windows XP, but it didn't
work under Windows 7. It would start up and seem to configure
properly, but then it wouldn't run the scheduled tasks at all. Happily
I found a very good replacement for it, Z-Cron ver 4.7 (build 06).
it's freeware as well, and works very well under Windows 7.

That's about all I can think of... hope some of you out there in
    Fidoland might find it useful!

    The Slightly Crusty Sysop
    Sean Dennis
    1:18/200

Spring is struggling to get here but it seems that it's hellbent on
making sure no one forgets the spring of 2011. My heart and prayers go
out to the families of the victims of this amazing yet violent storm
season with over 250 tornadoes. I witnessed the damage a small EF1
tornado caused locally at the Veterans' Administration hospital complex
here. Dozens and dozens of trees uprooted from the ground abruptly and
where the tornado touched down near the emergency room, the tops of a
dozen white pine trees were torn off like toothpicks broken in half.
It's simply awesome what Mother Nature can do when she feels like it.

Speaking of changing times, I, amongst others, have been noticing a
trend with some of the "new" sysops coming into Fidonet. They seem to
be suffering from what I call the "Linux syndrome". What I mean by
that is these people seem to think that every program that's ever been
written should be free and that the source code should just be given
out like it's candy with no respect to the author's wishes. I've also
noticed they're quite arrogant and un- willing to learn about the
BBSing culture (yes, there is one whether we realize it or not),
instead trying to tell people who have been involved in BBSing for many
years how things are or should be done.

If people like this continue to pollute the BBSing hobby then it is
doomed to die off for sure since no one I know in their right mind
would want to deal with such a "lovely" person as that.

FWIW: I'm not saying all Linux users are like this, but I've been
running into more and more of them in Fidonet lately. I think it's an
"entitlement" mentality meaning that they feel they should get
something for nothing. I've used Linux several times in the past and
I've supported Linux servers in a professional capacity before, so I
have a fair amount of experience dealing with Linux, its users, and the
fanboys that are rampant in the "scene".

I sincerely hope for the sake of Fidonet and the BBS hobby that if
these people come into the BBS scene that they learn to shut their
mouth and learn the culture before barging in like a bull in a china
    closet.

             -
             --------------------------------------------------------------------
             Issue #: 10

We've been reviewing the linage of Adam, the first man on
earth. Adam, Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared and Enoch.

(KJV) Gen 5:19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight
hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred
sixty and two years: and he died.

It's amazing that man was able to live such a long time such
as eight hundred years and still able to bare children. How
             times have changed.

(KJV) Gen 5:21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and
                             begat Methuselah:

(KJV) Gen 5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat
Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons
                             and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred
                             sixty and five years:

(KJV) Gen 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for
                             God took him.

Enoch did not experience death as he disappeared on this day
as he walked with God by faith. Lets take a closer look at
             this last verse:

(KJV) Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should
not see death; and was not found, because God
had translated him: for before his translation
he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

If were only as pleasing to God as Enoch was that we may not
             have to experience death.

(KJV) Gen 5:25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and
                             seven years, and begat Lamech:

(KJV) Gen 5:26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech
seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat
                             sons and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine
hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two
                             years, and begat a son:

(KJV) Gen 5:29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same
shall comfort us concerning our work and toil
of our hands, because of the ground which the
                             LORD hath cursed.

Do you remember in Genesis 4 when Cain killed Abel? What
happened to the earth and what did God do? Lets look:

(KJV) Gen 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which
hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's
                             blood from thy hand;

Our precious land has been cursed by God because of Cain's
killing. We must work the earth for the rest of our lives,
just as our eyes were open to both good and evil by the
disobedence of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit.

(KJV) Gen 5:30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five
hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons
                             and daughters:

(KJV) Gen 5:31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred
seventy and seven years: and he died.

(KJV) Gen 5:32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah
                             begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

We will close this chapter and proceed next time with the
generation of Noah. Let our hearts be opened by the Word of
God and be obedent in Him.

If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to
carry MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't

discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals , feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
     as above.

New email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to drdebug @
filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your bbs
listing to bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
     :)
