It's true.. I've rejoined Facebook at my daughter's insistence (Hey, I have
to blame it on somebody (vbg). It is useful for those who refuse to call
on those antiquted devices we either have in our pockets or somewhere in
    our homes, our telephones.

Who would have thought that the internet would essentially not only mean
the demise of phone/modem communications, but also simple, "hey how are
you" telephone calls? It's sad to me. Internet communications via icq,
facebook, etc. are cool, but it's not the same as actually having a
conversation with someone on the phone.

For instance, my birthday was Feb. 1st.. and I've got 4 sisters and a
brother.. out of all those siblings, only one sis took the moment it cost
them to give me a call on the phone. Mom called as well at least (smile).
A huge pile of people wished me a happy birthday on facebook and I don't
mean to diminish that, it was great - yet it makes me think how easy it is
now to show the world (publically, yet) that you care.

My sister who did call, and I had a great talk on the phone, btw. It was
more than enjoyable to not have to use emoticons hehe

Btw, sorry for the slowness in getting out this issue. I just had an
idea to improve the program I'd written to publish FidoGazette.. of
course it took longer than expected to get things the way I like them
(g).. Hopefully any strange characters etc. are cleaned up now if you
were still seeing any of them.

    Notes from The Z1C
    ==================

    The Problem:

The original DOS version of Makenl has caused some people problems in the
last several weeks in failing to update existing segments to the current
Julian date. This problem was reported as of 1/1/11.

New segments submitted have had no problem in this regard, and are
    incorporated without problems as usual.

As far as been reported this failure to update julian dates of the older
segments has not caused any problems either, that we know of.

In the newer MakeNl_NG, there were some other problems reported with
MakeNl_Ng in version 32?? not submitting segments even though there were
updated segments reported. I'm happy that the latest linux release, v329a
    fixed that for me.

If You're Having Problems, A Solution:

If you're running linux, switch to v329a available in the coordutl
    directory: http://www.filegate.net/coordutl/mnl329a.zip

Unfortunately, that archive does not contain any binaries (executiables).
If you're running Linux, that's no big deal, your system is set up to
compile most programs. Just have a look at the makefile to see if you
need to make any changes for your system before running make filename.

I've been running v329a since its release and have found no problems as of
this date. It was a simple compile over here.

If you need a DOS or Windows version, we plan to compile a version over
here. I'll announce it in the message echo MAKENL_NG as soon as that's
done (my intention was to get that taken care of a week or so ago :( )

                       Paradigm shift? Not really

This series of articles was precipitated by discussions in various
Fidonet echoes back in December. As was once said, "there is
nothing new under the sun." Might not be, but the new part these
days is that we can find ourselves easily tripped up if we're not
    careful.

A legendary curse was often expressed as "may you live interesting
times." We indeed live in "interesting times." Organizations such
as Wikileaks have the potential to make Daniel Ellsburg and the
Pentagon papers look like child's play, as they attempt to assume
a role once played by the press in our society.

So how do these "leakers" get their info to folks such as
WikiLeaks? Quite easily. It's all computerized, and the folks who
are in control spend less energy tracking the handling of secret
data than they do tracking personal information of ordinary
citizens here in these United States. A sad commentary, but I'll
step off the political soapbox now so you can continue reading.

If you follow the memories echo over here in z1 you noticed the
thread which started up in December of last year about our online
world and the changes that it's wrought in our social fabric. I
hear a lot of talk about this "new way" of interacting with each
other and a lot of hand wringing among sociologists and other so-
called deep thinkers about it, but I maintain it isn't for the most
    part all that new.

What's new about it? YES the "social networking" part of it is
quite new, and quite misunderstood by many of its users. They
spew forth their personal information like a fire hose in these
places blissfully ignorant of the possible consequences.

It's said in all this that many spend more time interacting with
folks via electronic media than they do interacting with neighbors
or friends nearby. I stated quite bluntly in the echomail
discussion I referenced earlier that I felt I knew many people I'd
met via Fidonet and various online forums more than I knew or know
my closest neighbors in this small town. I noted that before the
online world came into existence this might not be true for many as
it is today however. But, I also noted that this isn't as new as
folks like to think it is. Ham radio operators have been
introduced to this paradigm now for nearly a century.

    We've all seen those "you know you're a ... " lists, further
popularized by Jeff Foxworthy's "you know you're a redneck if ...
" list. Also said "you might be a ... " but one of them I've seen
in every "you might be a ham radio operator if ... " lists has this
    one.

"you start to miss people you've never seen." I'll bet it didn't
take you long to grasp why this might be true. So, think about it
a moment, then remember that smart radio amateurs take some
precautions in their dealings with others on the air.

Within hours of being evacuated from the hospital where we served
during Katrina I'd made contact with a ham radio associate so he
could advise others I work with in one of the communities there
that I'd be unable to fulfill my duties for the foreseeable future.
Within a few hours of hanging up the telephone after talking to him
I had phone calls from all over the country with offers of
assistance: clothing, radio equipment to return to the air; payment
of hotel bills, you name it. The ham radio community mustered more
useful assistance for my lady and I than the Red Cross or any other
"relief" agency did, and much quicker to boot. IN fact, the
assistance they rendered meant I wasn't calling on the traditional
agencies and organizations, enabling them to assist those in need
without any resources. If this isn't social networking I don't
know what is. See, it ain't that new folks!

Many over the years have needed to take extra precautions to
protect privacy as well. Consider how many entertainers use a
"stage name" so that they can live an otherwise normal life when
not performing. Back in the early to mid-1990's we saw plenty of
discussion both in the fidonet echoes, and in the FIdonews on the
pros and cons of "handles" on bulletin board systems. Even back
then when the online world was in its formative stages privacy
advocates were sounding the alarm but few were listening. IN the
halcyon days of Fidonet some moderators would waive the "real names
only" rule for a poster with special circumstances. A prominent
lawyer with the Federal Communications Commission posted under an
assumed name in the fidonet law echo back then. If I recall
correctly a couple of up and comers in the music world participated
in the guitar echo under an alias as well. Yes these were
apparently real names, because a two word "name" was presented to
the reader, so nobody was really the wiser. As current caretaker
of the guitar echo I state flat out in my rules that those who wish
to use a name other than the one they were given or normally use
today contact me and let me know who they are. But, as long as it
isn't something obvious such as "captain Kirk" etc. I"m none the
wiser if you do choose to use an alias and your sysop's amenable.
I just ask that if I have a need to communicate with such a party
that his/her host sysop do me the courtesy of making sure this user
can see my netmail communications to him/her.
Since there is indeed "nothing new under the sun" we'll talk about
what's been well known for decades about how to protect one's
personal information, and personal space next time. So, stay
tuned, and, Be alert! America needs more lerts.

     ===Energy Bars===
Ok, Im not sure if these will really increase your energy (g), but they
are MUCH better than any junk foods :)

Yield: 13"X9" pan of bars, we cut them like brownies.
    Preheat the oven to 350F.
Grease a 13X9-inch pan lined with foil.

    Combine in a large bowl:
3 cups cups packed dried fruit (apricots, pitted dates, raisins, figs,
                                      cherries, and/or cranberries), coarsely
                                      chopped)
Optional: I had some apples that I had canned from the fall, packed with
sugar, so I drained them and threw them in as well.. as long
as the total is about 3 cups, you should be fine)
      2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
      1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1 cup any chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, almonds)
1⁄2 teaspoon salt (see note below regarding shortening)
1 1/2 tsp. teaspoon ground cinnamon

Add and stir until well blended:
      3⁄4 cup (1 1⁄2 sticks) unsalted butter,melted
3/4 cup shortening or margerine melted (if unsalted, increase the salt to
              about 1 teaspoon)
      2 teaspoons vanilla

Press the mixture into the pan. Bake until top is golden brown, about 50 -
60 minutes. Don't over bake it. Cool in the pan on a rack. When the top
is golden brown, it's done :)

                         CHECK OUT THE SWL ECHO

Did you ever wish you could get more information than you could get
off the news channels after one of those big natural or manmade
    disasters?

Got one of those old general coverage (shortwave) receivers hanging
around at your house just collecting dust?

Maybe you have one, or two, or even four radios around, including
your vhf and uhf scanner on which you listen to the cops and the
public works folks, and of course the road crews after the
    snowstorm.

Yes, even in the age of 24/7 news coverage and satellite and cable
television there's still plenty of action on the shortwave bands.
That's that slice of spectrum, and a big one, that starts above
your AM broadcast band and goes all the way up.

Recently there was a post or two in another echo asking about where
to find discussions of shortwave listening topics. AT one time
Fidonet had a vibrant active radio hobbyist community, but
it isn't what it once was. obviously there is still a
bit of interest out there however. NOw those whose main
radio interest is surfing the shortwave bands, whether it
be the broadcast listeners or those folks such as myself
who concentrate on military aero and other "utility" monitoring
now have an echo on the backbone for these discussions.
NEwcomers to the hobby are most welcome there as well.

So, areafix the SWL echo for your BBS and you can help your users
find out where to tune on those radios after the earthquake or
hurricane. Get answers to questions about suitable equipment,
antennas, new and not so new gear, etc.

The rules are simple: Endeavor to communicate in English, play
nice and have fun. everybody from seasoned radio buffs to those
just interested in checking it out to see if shortwave listening is
something they might like is welcome. In fact, we encourage neophytes
    to post those newbie questions.

Sysops, areafix the SWL echo for your users today!

     --------------------------------------------------------------------

     Issue #: 7

In our last article, we talked about how the scheme of the devil put
wrath on the human race. As a penalty for disobeying God's command,
pain and suffering was put on mankind forever. The tree of life was
put to an end, therefore we are not able to live forever here on
earth. However, the moment God put limitations on the years we are
to live, Adam and Eve bore a son.

[KJV] Gen 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and
bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the
    LORD.

Adam and Eve were blessed to have their first child. Eve
experienced her first pain in childbearing. This was the beginning
     to a new generation.

[KJV] Gen 4:2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a
keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

Cain being their first born, Eve labored another child, Abel so that
he would not have to work alone. Cain was the caretaker of the
field and Abel would take care of the animals on the field. This
did not go well for too long.

[KJV] Gen 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain
brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto
    the LORD.

[KJV] Gen 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his
flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had
respect unto Abel and to his offering:

[KJV] Gen 4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.
And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

It all seemed well for awhile. Their first harvest came and Cain
offered fruit and Abel raised livestock and they both had brought
their offering to the Lord. Cain was very jealous of Abel, that
Abel found God's favor; Cain received not.

[KJV] Lev 22:29 And when ye will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving
unto the LORD, offer it at your own will.

It's not what we give in offering, it's how we give. We are to give
because we want to. It is not at all about what we get in return or
to please God. We cannot tempt our Lord with anything.

[KJV] Gen 4:6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and
    why is thy countenance fallen?

[KJV] Gen 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and
if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And
unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule
    over him.

If Cain had giving with delight in his heart and not to seek favor
all would have been well again. His desire overruled Cain and sin
came into his heart. He would then seek to act out in hate because
he was jealous of his brother Abel.

[KJV] Gen 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to
pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up
against Abel his brother, and slew him.

[KJV] Gen 4:9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy
brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's
    keeper?

Just as Adam and Eve hid in the garden after disobey God, Abel knew
he was in the wrong because his conscience told him so. We are all
gifted with the Holy Spirit for guidance. Cain had obviously
tricked his brother Abel to come to the field with him and
deliberately killed him in search for revenger. Cain was lost up to
this point. What Cain needed most here was love, joy and
     understanding.

[KJV] Pro 18:2 A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that
     his heart may discover itself.

[KJV] Psa 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give
thee the desires of thine heart.

[KJV] Gen 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy
brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

The Lord knew Cain did something wicked against Abel and Cain knew
it too. At this point, Cain was letting his fleshly wicked way take
the best of him. At this point, he should have been acting in the
spirit with good cheer and joy instead of hate and revenge. It has
led Cain on the wrong path. Even though sin had already carried
over into Cain and Abel from Adam and Eve, Abel knew had known how
to control his desires more than his brother. Now Abel is dead.

[KJV] Gen 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath
opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from
     thy hand;

[KJV] Gen 4:12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not
henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive
and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

Do you remember when God say that if you eat of the fruit of truth
you shall surely die? Already, after Even bore two children, one
has already killed his sibling. Sow into sin and you shall reap
sin in your generation and all the generations that follow. So
focus on the Lord in everything. Keep him first place in your
     heart.

[KJV] Gen 4:13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is
     greater than I can bear.

Just like Eve didn't think she could endure her labor pains as
punishment for her disobedience, Cain also feels he can't handle
his punishment. Don't we see a trend here? It all started in the
garden up until the current date.

[KJV] Gen 4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the
     face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid;
and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the
earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one
that findeth me shall slay me.

Cain knew well what it meant to sow a seed, for it to harvest and
reap his findings from his experience in the field. He knew well if
you would kill a man, that was the seed that would come forth and it
would come against him and he would be killed.

[KJV] Gen 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever
slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him
sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest
any finding him should kill him.

Cain just inherited his first insurance policy. Saying if any man
touch Cain, he will be punished seven times over. With this, we
will conclude this article and continue where we left off this time
     in the weeks ahead.

If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to carry
MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't already. Remember
also to keep your head up high. May God bless you and keep you!

*** This conclude this issue of e-Ministries provided by Jon
     Justvig.

    INFO:

Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help of
Richard Webb 1:116/901 (Old School ToolBox), and Sean Dennis 1:18/200
(The Slightly Crusty Sysop). If you have an idea for a column or a
series of articles, please contact me :)

    New!
Email subsriptions via www.filegate.net, but of course you can always
link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program:

    Where to Send Your Articles

Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when
there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather
you sent in material but I think until someone starts a
discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards
(just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin)
So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and
hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :)
Don't be offended.. write an article!

If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about
the dullard aspect of you guys and gals , feel free to drop
    your article off at:

By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net
Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652
1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer
(don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net).

Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554).

Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have
    one and send it along!

Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me
and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice
that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though
(something I'm typically guilty of (g)).

To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis
     as above.

New email address for submissions to Dr.Debug:
To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to drdebug @
filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :)

To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your bbs
listing to bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo!
     :)
