Volume IV Number XI November, 2010 ======================================================================= Editorial ========= Sean Dennis did a complete reworking of the Fidonet Compatible Software List, what agreat job! Thanks Sean! It's not only good to have some help, but it's also good to see lists like this being updated. Speaking of updated.. hopefully the new look on http://www.filegate.net/ works for you. I'm not done with all the pages by anymeans, but I'm working my way through the Contents: section first.. from there the rest should be able to be handled easily with the CSS file I'm using. If you notice any messed up links, etc., feel free to contact me :) Also (again) updated this past week was the driver for my mcs9865 driver for my US Robotics modem.. Once I had everything going smoothly, I started having some problems with the connexant modem still being installed even though it wasn't being "used".. It was probably an upgrade to some other software that caused the problem.. I renamed the connexant driver file to hsf-old and the problems went away (g). =#= Page 1 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! Here are a few ways to cook a pumpkin to use in recipes that call for canned pumpkin.. you will be amazed at the difference in the flavor between home-cooked pumpkin and store-bought canned pumpkin. Tip: Pick smaller pumpkins for pies and cakes. Save those gigantic ones for Halloween displays and Jack o'Lanterns. In your supermarket these are probably called "Pie Pumpkins". Cook it In the Oven: Carefully slice the pumpkin in half, crosswise with a sharp knife. Scoop out the seeds and strings with a spoon and reserve the seeds to make salted pumpkin seeds later. Turn the pumpkin halves upside down on a non-greased cookie sheet, and bake at 325F for 35-40 minutes, or until the pumpkin shell collapses and the pumpkin flesh feels soft. When done, let cool and then either peel the skin off the pumpkin half or scoop it out of the shell with a spoon. Place the pumpkin in the blender about 1/2 cup or so at a time to make a smooth puree. Typically a small pie pumpkin will make about 2 cups of pumpkin, cooked. Cook it in the Microwave: You can cook the pumpkin the same way as above in the microwave in about 1/3 the time (or less depending on the power level of your microwave). Cut the pumpkin in half, scrape out the inside strings and seeds, and place on a large microwave safe plate or platter with a rim. If your microwave isn't big enough for the two halves, do them one half at a time. Cook on HI power for about 9-10 minutes and then test for doneness. Holiday Pumpkin Bread ===================== This pumpkin bread is so good, you'll want to make several! When my husband took this to work as a treat for co-workers, one of the fellows insisted on bringing home a piece for his wife to taste. She then contacted me and begged for this recipe. Preheat oven to 350F 1 cup vegetable oil 3 large eggs 2 cups canned pumpkin, or fresh Pumkin, see About Cooking Pumpkins, above. 3 cups sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup roughly chopped raisins Beat the eggs and the oil until well mixed in a large bowl. Beat in the sugar. Stir in the pumpkin. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and baking powder, and salt. Mix well until combined. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin, sugar and oil mixture all at once, and beat slightly to combine all ingredients (use a wooden spoon, not a mixer for this). Stir in the walnuts and raisins. Grease and flour a large 10" tube pan with removable rim. Pour the batter into the pan and bake at 350for 1 hour and 15-20 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. =#= Page 4 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! Volume IV Number XI November, 2010 ======================================================================= The Slightly Crusty Sysop Sean Dennis 1:18/200 It's getting nice and cold out here in the mountains this time of year. This is when I can actually go out and get things done in the yard since I can withstand being outside for more than ten minutes at a time. The leaves are changing colors causing the hills around me to come alive in a bright symphony of reds, oranges, browns and everything in between. The holiday season is quickly coming upon us and one can feel it when you're out and about dealing with people. As part of a new season, I recently changed my BBS back to running Maximus/2 and christened my BBS with a new name: Paragon BBS. My BBS's telnet address has changed (paragon.darktech.org) but the feel of it is still the same. This is the time of year when people start posting more and more mail on the BBS networks and a time of more activity in the BBS scene in general. However, there aren't a lot of users left, so it's indeed a pleasure when a non-sysop calls your BBS to enjoy the fruits of your labor. We sysops like to do as much as we can to attract callers and for our regulars, we like to go out of the way to do special things for them to keep them calling. Is there a point, though, where sysops have to know when to say when? Is there such a thing as doing too much for a user? Have we tried to be everything to everyone in a desperate attempt to get users to call our BBS? I think I'm guilty of this just as much as any other sysop if not more. The past two BBS software changes I've done was because of something a particular user of mine wanted. I went through considerable time and effort to keep things up and running. Sadly, I recently had to change BBS software due to some problems (which weren't my fault) and I informed everyone that certain features would not be on my board anymore. I informed this user and I've yet to hear back from them. I think I angered them because I wasn't going to do things just for them; rather, I was going to run my BBS the way /I/ wanted it. I did put up a few doors that the user had requested, which was of no concern to me, but now I'm wondering because of the single feature I didn't put in if I've lost that user forever. I know this seems trivial to some, but this user'd been a very regular user of my BBS for a while and was even able to help diagnose problems with the BBS which is a rarety these days. I just can't understand people sometimes-if they can't get their way on a BBS, they basically tell you to shove off and act like a spoiled brat. In today's BBS scene, I guess it's easy to cherry- pick systems you want to call, but does a user know how much time and effort goes into setting up and maintaining a BBS? This is a moot point, I'd gather, since it seems that user's moved on, but it incenses me that after all I'd done for them and bent over backwards, I get discarded like yesterday's trash. Thankfully, there doesn't seem to be too many users like that these days but it's just the idea of being used, if you will, that angers me. I don't know if this is a common occurance anymore and I know I've been made fun of in the BBS scene for my propensity to change BBS software, but you know, it's a hobby. It's something to be enjoyed, cherished and to brag about...not to be a chore and a worry. To be very honest with you, as of late, I've been considering shutting down my BBS simply because it seems that there are nothing but spoiled users these days (oddly enough). But after all of these years, it's very difficult for me to get BBSing out of my blood. I've made lifelong friends in the BBS scene who have helped me out in so many ways that it would be a crying shame if I just closed down and disappeared. As you can see, I get perplexed sometimes about "should I stay or should I go". So what do you feel about this? Is it right to go all out to keep a single user or do you get things the way you want them and get snubbed by your user- base? Should you keep going for the users or should you keep going for your- self? There's many questions but it seems there's few answers. I still enjoy running my BBS and being delightfully quirky about what I like and don't like to do with my system. I consider my BBS to be a form of self-expression. Enough rambling for this month. I hope everyone enjoys the start of the holiday season. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving already (who doesn't?) and the enjoyable giving spirit that goes with it. As always, your comments are welcomed but your flames are not. If you'd like to comment on my column, please netmail me at 1:18/200 (preferred) or via email at sean@kd5col.info. If I like your comment, I'll publish it in my column sometime. =#= Page 5 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e! Volume IV Number XI November, 2010 ======================================================================= ---------------------- - e-Ministries - - by Jon Justvig - - October 30, 2010 - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Issue #: 2 In the last issue, we went over the first four days of God's creation. The first day He created light out of nothing. This is one of His finest creation. Without it, there is no real beauty, just total darkness. Nothing can hide in His Light and everything will be exposed. So keep on pressing on to total goodness! During the second day of His creation, he created water with a seperation. This seperation we know as clouds and a mass of water which well come to in a little bit. Have you ever wondered how the sky is blue and our ocean is so lovely with a good look upon it? If only all of our water was so pure! We're still missing something. The Earth, our mother which we step out onto every day. The third day He created the Earth, dirt, grass, seed, trees and everything in between. Finally, we have seperation in seasons, our wonderful spring, summer, fall and winter! From the Light he had created, He made the moon and stars to watch over the night. We'll continue where we last off last time. Open your Bible up to Genesis chapter 1, verse 20. Remember, we're reading from the King James Version. Your text may different between versions. Lets read... [KJV] Gen 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. [KJV] Gen 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. [KJV] Gen 1:22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. [KJV] Gen 1:23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. [KJV] Gen 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. [KJV] Gen 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. [KJV] Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. ...here we have it. All the wonderful from rabbits, squirrels, birds, butterflies to eagles, cats, dogs to cows, horses to sharks and dolphins! God has quite an imagination, doesn't He? These living creatures could have never been made by mistake. There's still missing besides all Light, darkness, Heaven and Earth... [KJV] Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. [KJV] Gen 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. [KJV] Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. [KJV] Gen 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. [KJV] Gen 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. ...the creatures could have made all the Earth theres, but this is where you and I come in. God created man and woman! What an idea God had when He created everything before He created us. These creatures for food and enjoyment, additional food from the fruit of of the trees and from the ground. We were put here to be in charge of our mother Earth. Not only were were created, but we were created in His image. Every aspect of Him do we have! We are all members of one body, His body. How do our arms work without our muscles, or our feet without our legs, our heart without our brain? Think about God's creation as we end this time. If you've enjoyed our meeting, remember to ask your SysOp to carry MINISTER, an echo with FidoNet if he/she doesn't already. Remember also to keep your head up high. May God bless you and keep you! *** This conclude this issue of e-Ministries provided by Jon Justvig. Volume IV Number VII July, 2010 ======================================================================= INFO: Fidogazette is published by Janis Kracht, Editor, with the help of Richard Webb 1:116/901 (Old School ToolBox), and Sean Dennis 1:18/200 (The Slightly Crusty Sysop). If you have an idea for a column or a series of articles, please contact me :) New! Email subsriptions via www.filegate.net, but of course you can always link into your uplink and use Tick or a tick compatible program: Where to Send Your Articles Unlike most editors, I surely do not mind running my mouth when there is a sparcity of articles for the 'zine. I'd MUCH rather you sent in material but I think until someone starts a discussion you feel like commenting about, you evil dullards (just kidding!!!) will no doubt complain about "no issues" (grin) So I will fill these issues with my meanderings and thoughts and hopefully we will grow into something of consequence here :) Don't be offended.. write an article! If you WOULD like to submit an article and prove me wrong about the dullard aspect of you guys and gals , feel free to drop your article off at: By email attach to address: janis @ filegate.net Fidonet attach: Janis Kracht at 1:261/38 Modem: 607-655-5652 1:261/100 filegate.net port 24555 via binkp or telnet mailer (don't send articles as routed attaches, send them direct to filegate.net). Standard binkp port only supports BinkP (24554). Give it a title, sign your name and network address if you have one and send it along! Don't worry about the format, I can take anything you send me and mutilate it further as you can see above. Linux is nice that way (g). Spell checking your own work will help though (something I'm typically guilty of (g)). To send reviews or recipes to the Food section, email or netmail Janis as above. New email address for submissions to Dr.Debug: To send a question to Dr. Debug, email a question to drdebug @ filegate.net or post in the fidogazette echo! :) To send a listing to the fidogazette internet bbs list, send your bbs listing to bbslist @ filegate.net or post it in the fidogazette echo! :) Page 9 ======================================================================= T h e F i d o G a z e t t e!
