From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *s-rwəy¹ ~ *s-rwe¹ (gold, yellow). Cognate with Burmese ရွှေ (hrwe, gold) ( < Old Burmese ရှုယ် (rhuy)), Sichuan Yi (shy, gold, yellow). Compare Zaiwa hui (yellow) and Longchuan Achang se⁵⁵ (gold).
