From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *s-rwəy¹ ~ *s-rwe¹ (“gold, yellow”). Cognate with Burmese ရွှေ (hrwe, “gold”) ( < Old Burmese ရှုယ် (rhuy)), Sichuan Yi ꏂ (shy, “gold, yellow”). Compare Zaiwa hui (“yellow”) and Longchuan Achang se⁵⁵ (“gold”).
