Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vitędzь, from Proto-Germanic *wīkingaz (whence Old Norse víkingr (“bay's dweller”)). Doublet of wiking (“Viking”) and witeź (“hero, valiant knight”), the former being a more recent borrowing from Germanic and the latter a borrowing from East Slavic.
