From Proto-Albanian *swexura, from Proto-Indo-European *sueḱue/or-, *swéḱuros (“father-in-law”). Cognate to Ancient Greek ἑκυρός (hekurós, “father-in-law”), German Schwieger (“mother-in-law”), Old English sweor, Latin socer, Russian свёкор (svjókor), Serbo-Croatian svekar, Sanskrit श्वशुर (śvaśura), Armenian սկեսուր (skesur).[1]
