From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wēˀtrāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *větrъ (Old Church Slavonic вѣтръ (větrŭ, “wind”)), Old Prussian wetro (“wind”), Latvian vētra (“storm”).
