From Middle High German vewen, from Old High German fowen, fewen, from Proto-Germanic *fawjaną (“to sift”). Closely related to Sanskrit पवयति (paváyati, “to purify, cleanse”), and more distantly to Welsh ir (“raw, fresh”), Latin pūrus (“clear, clean, pure”), Persian پاک (pâk, “clean, pure”).
